He is a playful trickster archetype early on which is what a lot of Son Wokung stuff boils down to. Ironically Goku doesn't actually fall into that niche.

Also the genome twist actually makes sense and is foreshadowed by literally all of Kuja's dialogue and plot points in the game post disc 1 and thematically it's supposed to mirror the whole Black Mage issue since Kuja's the one who taught the Queen how to make them and he knew because he was also just another doll-given-life and was literally just going gently caress YOU DAD I'M REAL AND I WANT TO LIVE.

'Cheapened the entire story?' the entire story is leading up to that twist, dude. It's Kuja's entire motivation and the reason he does anything else in the game. It isn't something tacked on, it explains everything.

If you don't like the twist, whatever, but don't act like they just threw it in to get that big DBZ money or whatever.

I, too, feel that one really obvious twist that has been apparent from the beginning not only ruins a game I in all other ways enjoy, but makes it the worst piece of media in an entire franchise full of stealing ideas and silly twists.

Dude, it was foreshadowed from the very first disc. Death is a thematic element of Final Fantasy 9 and it's constantly reinforced through the Black Mages, Kuja and then the dying world of Terra. Just because the story didn't go in the direction you expected it to doesn't mean it's bad.

Compared to the likes of Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy XIII which were garbled messes, IX is surprisingly consistent and coherent.

Judging from interviews and such, it seemed to have a pretty smooth development. It wasn't getting to grips with new hardware, there seemed to be a vague idea of what the mechanics and the narrative were going to be, and the change over from "Whatever Vaguely Related FF Spinoff Game" to FFIX happened early on enough that it didn't hamper them.

Funny thing is, she's statistically the weakest in the original version of XII to the point if everyone completed everything on the License Grid there'd be no point to ever using her. Another thing IZJS fixed.

Yeah, I rebought FFX for PS2 like a year ago and started replaying it and got about halfway through, then stopped for some reason... Now I have the remaster on Vita so I started over. I just started playing Curtain Call last night. This thread is making me want to go back and play FF9 because I never finished it, I got stuck somewhere on disc 3 a long time ago when it first came out. And there is some minor urge to replay FF8 again because it is my favorite (it was my first final fantasy), but feel like I should play through FF9 completely first, and finish a replay of FFX because I only played through it once.

I have way too many videogames I need to play.
