I had to go to an exam today for Uni, so travelling from Toowong to Griffith Nathan campus, I wasn't sure what to expect. TBH nothing happened at all, I just saw a poo poo ton of police in numbers the like of which I have never seen before. Since my exam today is the last thing I need to leave my home/general area for, I'm going to spend the next 6 days hiding in my room and doing SFA.

In fact, we move to put before the court that the mere fact any person arrives in Australia is proof enough that they don't have to. Also, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has just passed me a message asking to put forward a motion that violence against women is totes okay and asks your worship if he is au fait with ethics in gaming journalism?

quote:

FORMER Labor kingpin Eddie Obeid and four of his sons have asked police to launch an investigation into the “integrity” of the ICAC over the handling of its inquiry into the family’s Bylong Valley farm and a $100 million corrupt windfall.

They also called on the ICAC watchdog, former Supreme Court judge David Levine, to hold a public inquiry into whether the course of justice may have been perverted during the investigation known as Operation Jasper.

ICAC last year found Eddie Obeid Sr and one son, Moses Obeid, had corruptly agreed with former Labor mining minister Ian Macdonald to create a coal tenement over the farm from which the family stood to make $100 million.

The 14-page written applications to the police and Justice Levine — from Eddie Obeid Sr, Moses Obeid, Paul Obeid, Gerard Obeid and Eddie Obeid Jr — were delivered yesterday.

At the centre of the family’s complaint is the discovery of two confidential maps showing the mining tenement, which ICAC Commissioner David Ipp ruled had been found in the family’s Birkenhead offices during a raid by investigators in November, 2011.

The maps were crucial evidence that led to the corruption finding because they had come from Mr Macdonald’s office.

ICAC found they had been provided by Mr Macdonald to one of the Obeid family, probably Eddie Obeid Sr or Moses Obeid.

The family members consistently denied any knowledge of them during the ICAC inquiry.

A short grainy video of the raid, never played at the public inquiry, carries no time or date stamp, the investigators have their backs to the camera and the camera pans away from an investigator as they appear to open the manila envelope in which the maps were found.

The family’s complaint points out none of the statements of the eight investigators working on Jasper, tendered on the final day of the hearing, mentions finding the maps.

They claim it is significant the first of those statements was not made until February 6, 2013, the day Paul Obeid denied knowing about the maps in a confidential ICAC hearing.

“Our three complaints are significant. The integrity of the ICAC, and thus the integrity of the administration of justice in NSW, may have been compromised,” the letter to police states.

“There is current public concern with respect to the manner in which the ICAC is operating. The community’s confidence in the administration of justice in NSW and the role of the ICAC needs to be restored.”

They have also asked for an investigation into whether one key witness lied to the inquiry and into the alleged leaking of confidential information by ICAC to journalists. They claim they have witnesses to support their claims.

A spokeswoman for ICAC said they had no comment.

A spokesman for the NSW Police said they had no comment.

Surprise! America And China Sign Climate Agreement, Leave Australia In The Dust

quote:

Well, this whole G20 Summit is just shaping up like a dream for Tony Abbott and Co. Fresh from revelations that Australia has been the only nation fighting to keep climate change off the agenda, just today we saw the Labor Party walk away from negotiations over the Government’s plan to savagely cut the Renewable Energy Target, a move almost certainly designed specifically to embarrass Tony as all his important friends arrive.

And now this:
BREAKING: The US and China Just Announced a Huge Deal on Climate—and It's a Game Changer
The surprise agreement aims to double the pace of carbon pollution reduction in the United States.

Headline courtesy of Mother Jones.

So, let’s see. Now we have the world’s two largest economies, two largest carbon polluters and two most important allies and trading partners of Australia signing off on a deal designed to ensure they both accelerate the rate at which they cut back on their carbon emissions.

For America this will mean a 26-28% reduction by 2025, while the Chinese – still being able to play the developing nation card – have set in stone the year 2030 as the point at which their emissions will peak and begin to reduce. However this is linked with China’s declaration that they’re also committing to have 20% of their power generation provided by renewables by 2030, around 800-1000 gigawatts of power, or roughly the same amount as the entire electricity consumption of the USA. Both parties hope that by taking such decisive action they’ll push the rest of the world to do the same at the climate change talks in Paris next year.

As you might expect, Bill Shorten had a statement out so fast I’m vaguely suspicious he must have been standing inside the room when the agreement was signed.

"Tony Abbott fought and fought to stop climate change being discussed at this weekend's G20. If Tony Abbott still refuses to discuss the need to take action on climate change at the G20, he will embarrass Australia in front of the rest of the world.

"Tony Abbott's flat-earth views are out of touch with Australians and out of touch with world leaders. Climate change is not just an environmental issue. It is a security issue and it is absolutely an economic issue. Tony Abbott's failure to recognise this represents a failure of leadership."

Quite.

Still no word as yet from Team Abbott, so in the meantime let’s just revisit some of their better quotes from the last month or so, shall we?

TONY ABBOTT: “Coal is good for humanity, coal is good for prosperity, coal is an essential part of our economic future, here in Australia, and right around the world. This is a sign of hope and confidence in the future of the coal industry – it’s a great industry… Coal is essential for the prosperity of the world.”

GREG HUNT: “I think any of us who are trying to predict what happens, you know, almost a century away in terms of energy use might be getting a little bit ahead of ourselves.”

Try telling that to Xi and Barack, Hunty boy.

They push the button at APEC, which overshadows the poo poo out of the agenda at G20. Brilliant.

Am I wrong to be getting slightly less pessimistic because of this?

Not really. Despite the best efforts of the fossil fuel lobbies, progress on renewables is happening and it can be rolled out in a big hurry for little cost if people just develop the will to do so. Voters are becoming more and more concerned about climate change and it will eventually become (maybe by the next federal election) a mainstream political issue.

A good outcome is by no means guaranteed because conservatives will still find ways to be loving morons even in the face of global catastrophe, but at least there is hope.
