I'll mention a few of my favorites I don't see here that I love. You guys have good taste. King of Fighters 98 (steam port just came out I might add) Neo Turf Masters (same developers as Metal Slug by the way) Karnov's Revenge (best poverty fighter) Daytona USA Magical Drop 3 Tetris the Grand Master (any) Gradius III (good luck beating it, it has no continues) Most of what I play these days is either actual arcade titles or similar skill based twitch action games.

Are there actually arcades anymore (outside of Japan)? A lot of these "arcade" games sound like they were put out long after arcades were a thing.

That huge six-player X-Men arcade machine. Those Pac-Man table arcade machines. Also PlayChoice-10, the arcade machine that played ten different NES games and was one of the only way to play The Goonies in North America (the other way being the Nintendo VS. System arcade machines).

Currently, the last bastion of the arcade is the seaside boardwalk. Before malls started to die off, you could find one in just about any large shopping complex or kids amusement center. So really, not that long ago.

There is a resurgence of Arcade/Bar hybrids in a lot of big cities, not to mention the usual mini-golf gokart family centers. Dave and Busters. Most MAME emulated titles were release pre-2004. Our small town of 14k had a dedicated mall arcade all the way until 2002. MAME cabinets can be built for <$600 these days so there is really no reason anyone that likes arcade games can't make one. Most cities have some prefab shops or places that will gut an old broken cabinet and rebuild it for a multicade setup.
