Whenever I go to smite a mini-sentry, the universe aligns such that all enemy players unknowkingly collude into walking in the way of my DH rockets. I'll kill like 3 people and the mini will still be there.

A fun thing to do on koth_nucleus is equip the DH + concheror, go up on either one of the roofs and just snipe minis. Switch teams if you need, it doesn't matter who wins as long as all mini-sentries lose. If there are no minis, equip the cow mangler and set snipers on fire with charged shots.

If you kill his mini's constantly and without mercy (like a DH soldier can do) he will rage-class change, which is a much more permanent solution than sending the engie to respawn

If you kill the engie constantly the same thing happens, but that is a much more daunting task

Imagine if Valve had made hats team specific. If you wanted to wear a Team Captain all day, everyday, you would need to get both a Red Team Captain and a Blue Team Captain.

I bet Valve wishes they could go back in time. They'd be so much richer.

I stopped playing TF2 before they started bringing in items and hats and stuff, I pick it up for a couple hours every now and then but don't equip anything so I don't know what any of those things do. Just ten minutes ago as an engie I came up against an AFK enemy scout in a corner, I whacked him 4 times in the chest with my spanner and he didn't die, wasn't even close . He then went un-AFK and shot me twice with his scout shotgun thing, killing me. Ten minutes before that another scout had been running around with a blue 'teleporter'-style glow and was able to run right amongst my sentry etc without it tracking him or registering him as an enemy. That I put down to just a sneaky item charge up, but what kind of item allows a scout to sustain 3-5 whacks with an engie's spanner and not die? I didn't care about the hat stuff because it was all aesthetic but these power-up items are getting a bit ridiculous.

Yeah what's what I was thinking, I've played enough TF2 a while ago to know that Scouts are essentially tissue paper. After I died I switched back and I saw other guys run in and try to shoot him as well, he took them out without bothering to strafe or even move. Must have just been shift-tabbed up to an overlay to adjust his hacks when I found him.

The other scout (who took out my SG without it tracking him, running through it for like 5 seconds) was a different guy and had a special effect so I assume that was just some charge-up. It's just a completely different game now, it's crazy. I remember when the kritzkrieg first came out and it was like oh wow this changes everything! It's a shame that that recent add-on mode Mann vs Machine didn't work out, that seemed interesting but nobody kept playing it after a very short while.

I considered that as well but the rest of the time his ping was normal, and when he returned from inactivity to kill me his actions were smooth and didn't have that random jerking around that often follows a lag spike.

e: I don't mean to start a witch hunt, it's just a game, I just wanted to know if there was a charge-up or something that would have caused that. In the past half hour alone I'd seen a whole bunch of stuff that was completely new to me, like that scout powerup to avoid sentry guns, and I think some pyro or sniper was firing flares that could sap my sentry as well. It's a whole new world out there in TF2 now, the most I've ever equipped was that tiny turret that builds in a few seconds and can't be upgraded.

Hmm. There's no item that should allow a scout to survive that many melee hits while AFK. If he had BONK (can of soda, makes you invincible but can't shoot until it wears off) he would have had to drink it shortly before you started punching him, and you would've noticed the fuzzy glow around him and the words "MISS" popping up when you hit. It sounds like either hacking, a bad server with donation incentives, lag/bug, or you misunderstood something somehow.

There's also absolutely no item that should allow a scout to not draw a sentry's attention. That blue glow you're talking about sounds like a standard "buff" glow (a few different items have a similar visual effect, such as the batallion's backup), and some of those buffs might help him tank damage, but if the sentry wasn't noticing him at all then something else was up. Are you sure it wasn't busy shooting someone else?

But yeah, there's a lot of stuff nowadays, definitely a ton for a newbie to take in. Other than those two things (which don't sound like any item in the game, but that might be a miscommunication) we'd be happy to help explain any of them, or at least tell you what something's called to help you pick it out on the wiki.

Pyros indeed have a flare gun which can (weakly) do damage at range, and do a critical hit (for 90 damage) on anyone who's already burning. (There are actually already a bunch of variations on it, too, but no matter for now.)

It could very well have been that can of soda. I can't guarantee that I would have noticed a series of 'Miss!' popups since I didn't know I was supposed to look for them. It's a bit confusing if you don't know what all the various item effects etc are. I wish they'd made it like the uber charge, would be a lot easier to figure out for newbies - otherwise you're just wasting time and ammo and don't know why.

Bonk! Atomic Punch was one of the earlier items they added to the game, and isn't that commonly used. It has its own visual effect because you can shoot while Ubered but you can't while Bonk'd (so you want to run away from someone ubered, but ignore a bonk'd scout until they come down). They tried to make it obvious anyway -- there's a "speed blur" effect around the scout, any shots pop up the word "MISS", and the scout will yell "haha, missed me" constantly -- but if you don't know such a thing even exists, then yeah it's understandable to not know what's going on.

It lasts about 8 seconds after he stops to drink.

I'm in a similar boat Sulla-Marius; I dropped out of TF2 for a couple of years, but now I'm back I'm lost on a few things. I'm not very adventurous with loadouts and I have no patience for trading (in pretty much every game I've ever played - I pick a loadout and never let go) so I've been content to play Pyro for 100 hours and occasionally Heavy or Medic, but now I'm feeling like playing some other roles I don't really know where to start. I can't seem to kill anyone as soldier at all. :(

I wondered how engies were building so fast; I keep getting these mini wars of attrition where no matter how many I destroy, they just keep running back in and dropping another down.

If you don't like trading with horrible scammers and weirdos for some reason, but want different weapons, check out scrap.tf. You can trade almost any regular weapon 1-for-1 there, with the exception of brand new ones usually. It's automated, so you don't have to deal with anyone, and you can trade any of the weapons you don't like in again for others. You have to log in to steam's website from your browser though, so make sure you're actually on a legit steam webpage when you enter your info.

I think my site might come in handy - it can display all the weapons you don't have, if you want to use that as a metric for which weapons you're still unsure about.

The site is http://www.missing.tf - you'll have to manually type in your SteamID and hit Go. When you click on the image of one of the new weapons, it'll display the backpack.tf page - on the backpack.tf site, if you click the image again, you can click Wiki and read up all about it and how the weapon works.
