Take the average bats per tree in the forested regions. Identify forests using Google Maps. Multiply bats per tree by population density times the local proportion of hunters as measured by tweets about bushmeat. Multiply by average number of wives. Multiply by number of times wives have each other over for dinner. Adjust for the local religiosity factor times the number of imams and spiritual healers. This is exactly what I did during the masters program I totally did. Anyone tracking LinkedIn posts for gravediggers in Liberia? What about the tumblr accounts of prominent West African ambulance driving schools? Put this all into a linear matrix algebra probability simulator. Man, I wish I took more epidemiology classes! Based on the number of new funeral pictures that families upload to Facebook per day, I can be absolutely sure that the CDC and WHO are vastly undercounting. Who's tracking the number of campfires on the road between all major cities?

That still isn't good. That's not a good graph unless it's charting financial growth.

I hope all the troops and medical people spending their holidays in Africa have a good, safe time of it. I know I wouldn't want to be over there even if I hated my loved ones. (Although I might prefer West Africa to the narco area of Mexico at this point.)

Happy Ebolamas! So, did this fizzle out or is Ebola the new rampaging plague the CDC said it was going to turn into?

If I'm reading this correctly, the countries in West Africa have had their infrastructure crumble just enough to where the spread of disease is mostly localized and only rarely travelling to new areas. The interim infrastructure is being mostly run/managed/rebuilt by people familiar with hand-washing and the reality of disease (regardless of whether or not they believe in magic or the general importance of touching the dead).

So for now, fizzled out unless some new factors come into play - like more attacks on medical and aid workers, a new civil war, or invasion from a neighboring country.

Probably around now people in West Africa are equally being killed by treatable diseases like malaria, Ebola, and starvation from food supplies being disrupted.

:(

Yes, you are correct. The question is about people who got panicky about the idea of a global pandemic, and so indulged their inner doomsday prepper and bought some guns.

I hope we get a graph of actual January vs projected at some point. poo poo was supposed to go crazy by the end of this month. Still doesn't eliminate the possibility of a freak outbreak when we let our guard down though since we definitely won't eradicate.

Who of those who did not already own firearms do you imagine went out and bought one, because of a disease? I saw people panicking and buying respirators and poo poo, but guns? Nah.

Laboratory-Confirmed Cases: 13,776
Total Deaths: 8,289

Yeah, I know, and I hadn't seen any adjusted projections since the "holy poo poo we need to do something" phase. Just curious where we are relative to the panic graph.
