It IS lovely that women have to try and deliver their message of "Stop being arseholes, guys" in a way that doesn't offend the arseholes, but if you don't do it then the assholes will use it as an excuse to keep being assholes. So many left leaning movements fail utterly because they are unwilling to compromise in effective ways. You need to bring people incrementally over, demanding it happens all at once only ensures it will never happen. The environmental movement is having exactly the same problem.

Papua New Guinea's government says weapons were not used by asylum seekers during a standoff with guards at the Manus Island detention centre on Monday, contradicting comments from Australia's Immigration Minister.

Peter Dutton yesterday told the ABC's 7:30 program asylum seekers were armed with makeshift weapons when security guards forced entry into Delta compound to end a three-day blockade.

"Some transferrers, as I'm advised, had fashioned weapons or there was the suggestion of that," he said.

He later added: "I think it's important to point out that we're not talking about firearms, for example; we're talking about homemade or home-fashioned weapons."

However, a PNG government spokesman has told the ABC asylum seekers did not use weapons during the intervention on Monday.

The spokesman said police had found "weapons" during a later search of Delta compound, but was waiting for further information about what was found.

There have been conflicting accounts about the level of force used to end the blockade of Delta compound.

Asylum seekers and Australia-based refugee advocates say guards beat the detainees and dragged them on the ground.

The ABC has seen a photograph of a man with a bruised face and nose, who says he was beaten and is now in Lorengau provincial prison.

Mr Dutton said there had been "some physical confrontation" between guards and asylum seekers.

"There would have been some physical confrontation, for example, but I think the fact that it was over within a relatively short period of time and the police who were on standby didn't see a need to intervene would suggest that, I think, that the operation was carried out successfully," he said.

The PNG government spokesman said some asylum seekers were restrained for shouting or not following directions. He said there were no serious injuries.

Protests and hunger strikes continue at the Australian-run centre.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Environment Minister Greg Hunt have both denied reports of backbench frustration with Prime Minister Tony Abbott's leadership.

The ABC understands there is disquiet amongst Coalition MPs, worried about the Prime Minister's support amongst voters.

Some have even used the word "toxic" to describe his standing in the electorate.

Speaking from the United States, Ms Bishop said she did not believe that to be the case.

"I don't believe that's a description that any of my colleagues would apply to the Prime Minister," she said.

"That's not a term that they use with me.

"The Prime Minister is leading a strong team."

Mr Hunt also dismissed the "toxic" claims, saying he "hadn't heard that".

The Government has this week been forced to deal with reports of Cabinet disagreement between Mr Abbott and senior ministers over contentious cuts to some Medicare rebates, which were dumped last week.

The Government says the decision to drop the $20 cut to rebates for short consultations with a doctor was a unanimous one, made following "vigorous" discussion.

Mr Abbott yesterday denied that he had made a "captain's call" on introducing the proposed cut to the Medicare rebate late last year.

The Guardian is reporting that Federal Government Agencies are reporting journalists who ask too much about asylum seekers to the Federal Police. The agencies are hoping that the Federal Police can lean on the journalists to find where the leaks or who the whistleblowers are.

What a bunch of fucks, no matter how low you think the Government can get, they do their best to surprise you.
