tbh i don't know much about lapierre, but this is a dumb, misleading chart. it's overwhelmingly visually suggestive that goc=good b/c he's way up in the top right and dark blue, and lapierre=bad b/c he's way down in the bottom left and dark red. but really, all it shows is that goc is a marginally better, yet still negative, possession player, which might be partially explained by favorable usage*.

that said, i'm certainly not saying i'm in favor of this trade. goc seemed like a high quality 4th liner and valuable PKer, so i'm skeptical of the potential benefit of this trade. not the end of the world, but IMO the pens biggest need is bottom 6 depth, not bottom 6 agitation, and i don't immediately see how this will help with that

If they want to keep Kypreos on the air they can, but he can only punch himself in the face.

There I fixed the ratings Rogers.

Honestly to me the strangest part of this trade is Goc not being healthy-scratched for the game. How often do you see players play a game and then get traded immediately afterwards? (not counting Mike Cammallari literally being pulled off the bench in the middle of a period to be traded lmfao e: for rene bork too i literally can't stop laughing thinking about how loving absurd that was)

x axis is zone starts - a measure of where players are starting on non-neutral zone faceoffs, under the assumption more dzone starts = tougher minutes. eyeballing that graph, if those players would have 20 non-neutral zone starts in a game, lapierre would be ~6-7 ozone ~13-14 dzone and goc ~8-9 ozone and ~11-12 dzone

y-axis is a measure of how tough of opponents they ate playing, based on ranking opposition players on time on ice. it assumes the teams best player plays the most minutes, down to their worst player playing the fewest minutes. lapierre here is playing against 4th liners, goc mostly 4th/some 3rd lines

bubble size of the player is their time on ice - so both lapierre and goc are playing a similar about of toi

bubble colour is player corsi, using the colours on the side of the graph. if you don't know what corsi is, in short its +/- for all shot attempts when a player is on the ice (shots on goal + missed and blocked shots).

so in an at-a-glance comparison the graph tells us lapierre is playing relatively defensive minutes against the worst the opponents can offer and his team is getting killed in shot attempts during those minutes. goc is playing slightly easier starts against slightly tougher players and his team is close to holding their own in shot attempts

The fun thing with the charts is you can't just say something like "Top left toughest minutes, bottom right easiest" because the direction of each axis is not consistent between sites.

Blue almost universally means good. Just sometimes you need to see it in context. That 3rd pairing call-up in blue probably isn't a superstar defenseman, he just gets like 75% o-zone starts against the 4th line.

The particular chart has a tiny scale to make the difference more pronounced though.

I'm ready for Tom Wilson to be sent down to Hershey. He provides nothing offensively and while he can draw penalties, he takes some really bad penalties as well. If he's going to develop anything offensively it's going to be in the AHL, because Wilson hasn't shown anything that allows the coaching staff put him in a top 9 role on the Caps.

Also Trotz needs to drop Orpik to the 3rd pairing now. He screened Holtby on a goal last night and was crushed in possession yet again. The infuriating thing is that while Trotz is willing to strip ice time away from guys like Chimera, Ward, Green, Wilson, Burakovsky, and Kuznetsov when they play poorly, he hasn't shown the same inclination to do so with Orpik.

Just a bad game all around, but thankfully the Rangers and Panthers lost in regulation as well.

I can't really knock Wilson not providing offense when he's skating under 10 minutes a night with Beagle and Chimera. But if all you need him for is a 4th line chugger, send him down and get Latta, O'Brien, Volpatti, or whoever in the lineup. I've gotta thing getting top six minutes in Hershey is better for his development. I didn't understand his usage under Oates and it's not much better now.

Orpik's not going anywhere, sadly enough. At least putting him with Carlson covers up a lot of his shortcomings (although Carlson had some bonehead plays last night).

I think that chart of Lapierre vs. Goc is a bit unfair because many of Lapierre's playing minutes come with Steve Ott who is dumb and bad and Ryan Reaves who is cool but also mostly bad. Then again, I guess Goc could have been saddled with similar linemates most of the time.

It's pretty easy and obvious to say that Brodeur would have never ended up with the stats he did if he wasn't lucky enough to play for a power house team most of his career but he was still a very good goalie in his prime

It's easy to assume that with Crosby and Malkin both being injured the Rinaldo cheapshot on Letang must have just flipped Rutherford the gently caress out. Because it's hard to otherwise understand why you'd trade a useful bottom-six guy/penalty killer for a guy whose name I'm pretty sure is French for "Tanner Glass"

Also I was at the game last night and Goc had a pretty good game, which my friend and I were discussing, and it was pretty jarring to learn on the way home that he'd just been traded

Goc was the only bright spot on the Pens' 4th line. To be honest I don't think he was that impressive either but his stats are definitely depressed from playing with abysmal line mates. Unless you declare Sidney Crosby is our new 4th line center I'm pretty sure our 4th line is going to suck no matter who's in the middle because Craig Adams and Zach Sill are lovely and slow and can't score.

Early in the third there was a loose puck going into the Winnipeg end and Craig Adams had the direct line to it but someone just skated right around him and beat him to the puck by two strides. Someone in the row in front of me said "he skates like he's underwater" and got a pretty good laugh.

Goc can't score at all but he plays pretty good defense and is a passable penalty killer. Seeing as how the Blues gave up a guy who can't play hockey at all and makes no pretense of trying to, I'd say it was a pretty good trade.

I'm not so sure about this. St. Louis has obviously had some really great seasons of 90+ points, but for most of his career he's been just about a PPG player. It's silly to try and project the future but for the sake of discussion I think with the right teammates and more time developing it's not out of the question for Gaudreau to have a similar career trajectory. Assuming the Flames as a team continue to improve, and as Gaudreau himself gets better as a pro, 70-80 points most seasons seems pretty realistic given what he's accomplished in college and so far this season.

Dude could definitely stand to put on some weight though. Being short isn't as much of a hindrance as it used to be but he's significantly lighter than guys like Ennis and St. Louis.
