Whorelord posted:going to the british museum is hilarious The British Museum is the greatest monument to imperialism the world will ever see (and also one of the best museums in the world) and I loving love it. Everyone who thinks the British Empire was bad needs to be taken there to see all the cool poo poo we got. My only regret is that we didn't conquer and loot more, and we should have trained all our soldiers to recognise priceless artifacts so they would loot more and smash less. basically the British Army should have become the official collections arm of the museum, rather than the unofficial arm.

Bhodi posted:To be fair to Mao, it did work out in the end. Chinese population doubled, minus 5% due to famine, and once he was marginalized they had all those extra hands to fuel a massive production which pulled hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and made them a first world nation. yah but their demographics are even more hosed up than Japan's because the population growth stopped dead but before any kind of economic growth at all so now they're going to stop growing at like brazil levels of wealth like as hosed up as japan is it's scary to think that's basically best case scenario for china

This is pretty much every dictator.

Groovelord Neato posted:This is pretty much every dictator. Not really. Castro, Hitler, Stalin, Franco, Mussolini etc. all seem like people who rose to power, learned from the world around them and aside from genuine insanity in some cases knew how to run a country to a fair degree. Mao just seems like he lucked into everything and because China was so loving huge no one wanted to tangle with him and the 2000 year old culture of subservience to the overlords allowed him to just completely ruin China (twice) and gently caress pre-teen peasant girls instead of bathing. The 5 year plans for the Soviets were pretty harsh but managed to rapidly accelerate Russia into the modern world. The "Great Leap" was Mao just condemning 60+ million peasants to death and producing literally nothing of value because he wanted to catch up but was completely ignorant as to the differences between China and Russia. Deng Xiaoping seems like if he had been in Mao's position China would be vastly better off, but because Mao held the power at the start he had to stay back and not rock the boat to avoid being executed and just bide his time. pentyne fucked around with this message at 02:02 on Jan 30, 2015 |

The Chinese are exporting their not giving a poo poo about historical artifacts to other countries. "The graffiti on an Egyptian carving at the 3,500-year-old Luxor Temple reads: "Ding Jinhao was here." "Leaving graffiti is common among Chinese tourists, damaging historic sites and demonstrating poor education and behavior. "Yasser Hamed, the Egyptian tourist guide who led the tour on which Shen Yuwen discovered Ding's graffiti, said the boy may have noticed similar graffiti left as long ago as the early 20th century on the temple's walls, and thus may not have realized the gravity of his act."
