So, what does the NHL draft look like beyond McDavid/Eichel? Asking as a Leafs fan who is hoping for a top-5 pick to compliment future Hart winner, William Nylander, and future Norris winner, Morgan Rielly.

The 2015 draft is looking pretty good. The top 8-10 is among the best in the last decade, the overall depth is probably above average. Far better than last year, not as deep as 2013 but with some much higher end talent.

Noah Hanfin is a really good two-way defender out of Boston College; he's the consensus #3

Mitch Marner is having an outstanding year with the London Knights but is on the smaller size (Pat Kane type sorta)

Dylan Strome is also having a great year, he's got the size and skill to be a slamdunk NHLer. Probably the 'safest' pick after the top 3.

Oliver Kylington out of Farjestads is another good puck moving defenceman that has slipped a bit after being considered a top 3-4 pick a couple years ago.

Lawson Crouse played for Canada at the WJC but he's just a big dude who doesn't put up points. I'm not unconvinced he' only appearing in the top 5 in draft rankings because NHL CSS just wants to see if they can turn a nothing player into a high draft pick by saying he's one. He's strong I guess.

After that the talent sorta drops off a cliff a bit. There are a lot of scoring forwards available this year, so there will probably be a run on players like Timo Meier, Pavel Zacha, Matt Barzal and Travis Konecky in and around where the Leafs are going to pick. The rankings after the top 5 are all over the map, so it's really anybody's guess as to who goes where.

Hanifin is an incredible skater and his offense looks like it's starting to come along now.

Don't sleep on Werenski though. 18 points in 20 games this year at Michigan (from defense), 6 months younger than Hanifin, good size.

Both of those guys look great :911:

e: I hope the Devils get one of Strome, Hanifin, or Werenski assuming they don't get McDavid/Eichel. Lou/Adam Oates please don't jump on a second tier forward over Werenski because of need you idiots.

You could draft Denis Godla, the most popular goaltender to play in Toronto in years?

Not really, they play on different lines and (if I recall correctly) Strome put up a lot of his points when given the first line centre role after McDavid broke his hand then went to the WJC. I like Strome, he's pretty consistent and does a lot of stuff well. He's defensively responsible, a good passer and has a decent (but not spectacular) shot. Basically a left handed version of his brother. He's not flashy or a pure hustle kinda guy so he gets overlooked a lot, but he'll be a very good 2nd line centre for a long time. Think Paul Stastny or someone like that.

Unfortunately, I do not have the powers to influence who the Toronto Maple Leafs draft. If I did, we would be enjoying the likes of Nikita Filatov and Mikhail Grigorenko in Toronto.

This is good stuff. I am now hoping the Leafs continue their backwards climb towards last place, which is the only joy I will see in this hell forsaken winter.

Actually, the winter hasn't been that bad, and the Raptors are kind of good when they don't play great teams, so don't worry about me.

Ivan Povorov (D) from the Brandon Wheat Kings is supposed to have a good chance of stepping right into the NHL and he's projected to go somewhere in the middle of the first round. His partner Ryan Pilon has an unfortunate name for a defense man, but is also supposed to be a pretty good second round choice.

10 Knights players drafted in the first round in the last 9 years. No other OHL team comes close to that. The Hunter bros have bent and broken every drafting rule imaginable to make sure they get the best talent around. They do not get passed over very often, and if they do its because they arent that good anyway.

I meant more like Domi falling pretty far and now looking pretty good. Seems like if its a toss up between 2 different players you just take the Knights guy. Like unless hes clearly not as good or something, im not saying take him over Connor or something.

Columbus is full of mythical creatures. We've had a bit of a problem with the Injury Bug grinding bones and other body parts to make his bread this year.

I heard there was a Boone Jenner in town, too. Apparently people saw him briefly this year before he disappeared into the lair of the Bug again.

I think it's supposed to be one of those "wakeup call" scratches for poor play but Johnston's personnel management kind of bugs me. I'm not sure if he's just loving around for the sake of experimentation because the regular season doesn't matter to the Penguins now I guess and the team is mostly healthy so he has the pieces to play around a little, but things like putting Perron on his off-wing so Kunitz can play on the first line when Hornqvist is healthy now, not resting Fleury more, or, well, just letting Zach Sill and Craig Adams play in general don't seem very smart.

I wasn't saying that Filatov would still be a Leafs player if I had some sort of power to draft him. Just that I would have drafted him over Schenn, who is at least an NHL player still (I actually have no idea how good or bad Schenn is anymore, because there's no way I would watch a Flyers game).

Weren't the final rankings on Domi all over the place? It's hard for me to remember, so I am probably wrong, but I don't think he fell, especially over the guys drafted ahead of him.

I think Malkin and Comeau are both expected to be back next week so once that happens we can accurately determine whether or not Mike Johnston is retarded through the simple test of whether he rolls with a top line of Perron-Crosby-Hornqvist or something else.
