I remember growing up in the '90s the back page of the lovely local community paper used to be covered in ads for 1-800 sex lines that cost like $4.95/min., which is probably about $10/min. in today's money. Obviously this was a pretty major, or at least viable, business at one point, so we can assume it employed a lot of people. But now that we stream HD video of like people boning or clowns taking a dump on one another or whatever, I can't imagine there's really any demand for phone sex, and certainly not at prices that would support the employment of so many operators. So my question is, is there like a horde of unemployable middle-aged, sweat-pant-clad ladies out there who are boned on the job market because their only marketable skill - talking to guys who are whacking off - is no longer in demand? Have they just all gone into teaching? What's become of them?

Online roleplay chat? Ooh, maybe they went off the phone and decided to grab a webcam.

I'm not quite that old so my only exposure to phone sex was a few times back in high school, that was a good 10 years ago and on my first cell phone. Was phone sex ever a thing for folks other than horny teenagers, like before internet porn?

When I was about 12-13 my buddy used his parents credit card to call a sex line (killer move) and stayed on the line for about 40 minutes (killer move pt. 2) running up an enormous bill. Evidently he proved himself such a good customer that the phone sex line subsequently called his family's house about 5-6 times out of the blue just to see if "Tom" wanted to chat again.
