This is a big part of Kevin Owens' motivation on NXT, wanting the title so that he will make more money and can provide a better life for his family. It gives his character a bit more depth than "Kevin Owens is a prick." Instead, he is a prick and a loving father.

I have no idea why they don't make money a motivation more often. It's instantly relatable, adds meaning to meaningless matches and as you say adds depth to characters like Owens.

I remember back in WCW they would even say that the US Title gave you the greatest shot at getting a World Heavyweight Championship match. The TV title meant a lot because it was always traded between great workers, too. Even the Cruiserweight championship had a lot of feuds and stories around it in WCW's height.

Meanwhile during the same era in WWF people were having Hell in a Cell matches over the IC title and it would go between being the title for Main Eventers who aren't involved with a Main Event program, and upper midcard guys who would feud over the title, all the way up until China won it and started feuds with Jericho and Jarrett.

Some of my favorite feuds happened over midcard belts. Raven/Benoit/DDP in WCW happened because of a belt, and so did Jericho/Angle/Benoit did over two titles. A lot of the CW feuds in WCW (Jericho/Malenko, Jericho/Mysterio, Eddie/Mysterio as well as just great matches in general) were highlights of the era.

You don't even need deep complicated stories if you just put effort into it. Owens made the NXT championship important in one promo.

I still love the story of him meeting JJ Dillon at a radio station, telling him he was totally a wrestling manager, and getting his job by sending in a promo tape of him and his buddies from his club pretending they were wrestlers.

The Attitude era can best be summed up as a gravelly voiced Freddie Blassie talking about the "wars of hero's raging to sup at the teat of immortality" in the PPV openers and the the actual content being a bunch of dudes in green pointing at their dicks.

Before China won the ic title had been held by such great main eventers such as The Godfather and Road Dogg and Goldust in 1999 men i wouldn't be shocked to main event a ppv in 99

My favorite part of this IC title angle is all the verbal gymnastics to avoid saying the word "belt" in commentary. Like... no, Cole, BNB has actually had the "title" and the "championship" this whole time. The belt was stolen. A belt is what that object is.

I assume this is just another one of Vince's anti-"wrasslin'" edicts? It is by far the stupidest.

TwoDogs1Cup posted:

Why is it so hard to book a dominant ic champion who eventually challenges the world champion
As far as I can remember, challenging the world champ never really happened that much. IC champions were absolutely stronger, but they tended to drop the belt before moving on to the WWF title scene. Warrior/Hogan was an anomaly.

It's hilarious to me that despite it not making one iota of sense on what we've seen for the past few weeks, Vince can change his mind one week away from Mania and add Daniel Bryan to the main event, or even take Reigns out of it, or put someone else in the main event spot (AXELMANIA), and with the insane way WWE is being run it would be allowed to happen. It's not at all likely to happen, but just the fact that it could happen blows my mind.

Yup. Dude hates the word 'belt' for some reason. I think there was a quote about 'belts are what hold up pants" or something equally dumb.
