Tuxedo Catfish posted:I get what they're doing with Mikado, I just wish that he were more of a quick thinker and that we were privy to more of his thoughts. Being too stunned to act decisively is probably a realistic reaction in that situation, but it'd be more fun if he began visibly (or audibly, I guess) putting the pieces together. Basically, they need to actually show, not tell, the audience that Ryugamine is a giant badass under the whiny coward nerd that appears to be. Everyone else is characterised that way, even Anri's a huge badass even if she's voiced by HanaKana.

Izaya and Aoba both seem to be implying something but Izaya's inscrutable so who knows what the gently caress he's actually thinking and Aoba's just as much of a mystery at this point. Literally everyone else he's interacted with thinks of him to be just as much of a normal kid as the show presents him to be.

I don't have any specific spoiler knowledge, it's just pretty obvious that Mikado's headed for a turn of some kind. He's getting more and more caught up in Izaya's schemes and he was just on the receiving end of a speech about how he has to evolve or die. It would be weird if there weren't some huge shift or reveal in his characterization soon. I hope it takes the form of him following Izaya's advice while also frustrating his expectations, but maybe that's too obvious. Remember his stunt to intimidate Namie into backing down in Season One? We've known there was something beneath that milquetoast exterior for a while now, but holy balls they could afford to bury it a little less.

I'm going to be really interested in seeing exactly how Mikado turns into a huge badass like everyone who has read the manga has been not so subtly hinting. While everyone else either has supernatural super powers or are incredibly strong (even Masaomi could hold his own in a fight), Mikado just seems like a normal kid whose sole "power" is being able to send a text message to a bunch of people at the same time.

I haven't read the light novels either, but between all those weird smirks and the midpoint of Season One, there's definitely something going on under there.

"Like catching 2 stools in one fall." Yep, Varona has completely lost it. I really liked Akane's back story and how it was presented. Also everything else, but that's standard fare at this point.

I wonder why Izaya didn't bother to manipulate Akane himself and instead used whomever that brown-haired stand-in was. Unless Namie is going behind his back? That seems unlikely since everything seems to be going according to what Izaya planned at the moment.

I'm fairly certain Aoba or his actions wrt Mikado are a blind spot to him and whatever Mikado ends up doing instead of staying home like Izaya tried to get him to by impersonating Kida is going to be unaccounted for. I'm also thinking Namie used someone else instead of Izaya in the Akane scheme behind Izaya's back like you said, and I'm pretty sure that no-one other than Celty and Anri are even aware that Varona and Sloan are around. This is a giant clusterfuck and I love every bit of it.

Even Baccano was never this much of a clusterfuck. Clusterfucks are Narita's specialty, and they're when his stories really shine. The anime never really got to adapting any of Baccano's biggest clusterfucks though but even then Durarara still probably surpasses it in just how many different plans and characters collide.

My guess would be Namie is doing this one on her own, and trying to stitch Izaya up in preparation for the inevitable murderous Yakuza reprisal. Although I'm guessing it won't work and will spiral out of control somehow, because Durarara.

Then again, his overall demeanor with regards to Shizuo (whether he's speaking about or directly to the dude) seems a ton more affable in the anime than in the novels. Also, wasn't the guy who stood in for Izaya one of three dumbasses from the early parts of the first season?

But we later got a scene of Izaya leaving town wondering why Shizuo wasn't just beating the crap out of all the mafia guys that were after him and being upset that he was growing as a person. But still being pretty confident that everything was going according to plan.

If I hadn't had a friend pester me over and over again to watch DRRR season 1 with him I wouldn't have made it past episode 5.
