A history prof told an anecdote in our class once about her trip to China/HK. Apparently most (all?) of the boat people you see in Hong Kong harbor do not know how to swim. She saw someone who'd fallen off of the boat flailing in the water and no one went to rescue them because no one could swim and they didn't have any rescue gear. Everyone just watched this person die.

I guess that'd help with confirmation bias about water being bad and shui gui or w/e.

Calling bullshit on this one. Boat people were diving for oysters, selling seafood, making shrimp paste.

Even non boat people swam, older relatives on my dad side and loads of people in Guangdong province actually swam to Hong Kong. They had to carry a garbage bag full of some clothes and when the boat was near the edge they loving swam to shore to register for an identity card.

I guess everyone just hated that guy, lol.

If a persons drowning and is near anywhere near your own body weight and you don't have a life jacket or some sort of floaty to help you then trying to save them is probably going to kill your rear end as well.

Like, even personally- with my superior western ethics- i'd try to save a kid or maybe a small lady or maybe get my rear end killed for one of my brothers but if you're a bigger dude and a stranger i'm not going near you.

if you want to save a drowning person that is flailing around in a panic, just wait until they have exhausted themselves. when they start to sink you can grab them. stay away from panicking people! hit them if necessary!

trust me, i've learned this during my lifeguard training.

I asked this middle aged lady to take a photo of us - as she was taking the photo she said "honey, you need a new kind of boyfriend". Her kids were super embarrassed :smith: It really didn't register in my mind what was happening because i wasn't paying attention :neckbeard:

Sometimes guys in the bar district of some Chinese cities would murmur "yeah.... she's probably just Russian" as they walked by.

you know what also skunds cruel? if there is an accident you have to ignore the people who scream in pain. why? because the people who need the most help are the ones who can't scream anymore and are unconcious.

Knock them out. Drowning people panic and panicking people are much harder to rescue, to the point it might put both your lives at risk.

1) its best to avoid being grabbed by a panicking person. wait until they can cooperate or start sinking.

2) one technique if you're grabbed from the front: put your hand under their nose and push the head away with force

3) use any means necessary to get away. thisway you both don't die and probably both will live. and at least you will live.

it's a worst case measure and anything is fine, as long as it gets you away from that person. but as i said: it shouldn't happen anyways, because you don't go near a panicking drowning person.

and another thing: it is possible to save people that are even larger than yourself.

The whole "punch them to get away" is absolutely real, and it happens. We were also taught to try and have someone else keep the "helpful idiots" away once you get ashore, again by any means necessary.

My dad was in the Navy and they had this training situation where your plane crashes upside down and fills with water and you have to find your way out. There was a diver on hand, of course, in case anything went wrong. Well, my dad couldn't get his seatbelt off and starts to panic. The diver swims over to help and my dad flails around in despair and hits the diver in the face. He said the diver swam back like 8 feet, crossed his arms and sat there waiting. At that point my dad got the point and settled down and the diver gave him the extra oxygen mask and cut him out of his seat. Professional water rescue people really don't seem to put up with any panicky poo poo.
