Even better, it is an AAR that omitts the endless "3x plane diving from altitude..." pretty much every other AAR posted has.

I just read the first couple of posts of that AAR. What's really crazy is, would the Americans even have entered the war if the Japanese made the same strategic decision he did?

It might have caused them to enter the war considerably more tooled up than they did. Them and everyone else.

Over the past week or so I managed to slog through that whole AAR. I can't decide if its just the Allied player being super over-aggressive or if the Japanese player is just leading a charmed life with his carriers surviving again and again unscathed. He seems to be having no problem getting advanced airframes and engines into mass production, and keeping good pilots in them.

He seems to be having no problem getting advanced airframes and engines into mass production, and keeping good pilots in them. I've only just gotten to '43, but I think he's micro-managing his pilots and airframes so much that his CV's aren't running in to the usual problem of facing both advanced planes and greater numbers like you'd expect. In fact it's the opposite - he's rushing for the best aircraft possible and only building carriers, and not over-producing anything at all. Scenario# 2 players have a lot more to throw around, but typically don't have the specific tools that the Japanese player does as early as he does, because he's poured resources in to getting the better planes at the expense of a lot of other stuff. The fact that this is scenario#1 and the Japanese player was late setting up his perimeter defenses in the DEI (.. and not taking Ambon so late) and Gilbert's is probably why the Allied player attacked in the first place, only to get cut down when the KB showed up in force. The Allied player is super aggressive though, which is why there's such high attrition in CV's and BB's. His attack on Java was super aggressive and risky, and he paid for it with 2 American CV's. It's a great AAR though, showing what's possible in scenario# 1 with careful micromanagement. The advanced aircraft can make a huge difference.

Taking out a dozen US submarines for free does seem to be a good idea rather than bombing Pearl Harbour - submarines wreck tons of stuff in every playthrough I've seen, while BBs seem to mostly just be high value targets for people to cheer about when they inevitably get torpedoed.

Murgos posted:Except that the subs in the PI in 41 are all pretty bad, and the US gets something like 150 advanced fleet boats over the next few years. There's 4 S-boat's in Manilla which have are the ones that have good torpedoes (but not so great range until 6/43) but the rest are the long-range but lovely torpedo variety, so yeah Manilla isn't that good of a trade. The slow BB's at Pearl are at least marginally useful for bombardments or soaking up torpedoes from bombers. I think the main idea behind hitting Manilla is lessening the loss of the super EXP pilots that then IJN han. The slow BB's are only a threat once you've lost some/most of the KB. US subs only really start to be a threat in 1/43 (60% failure rate instead of 80%), and on 9/43 finally get working torpedoes, but at some point later on even Japanese ASW is pretty decent, so US subs have a relatively small window of usefulness. Up until recently the Japanese got absolutely killer ASW boats (E-class), but in theory that's been addressed in some of the recent beta patches. In earlier games it seemed fairly common for the USN sub fleet to be relatively unimportant because by the time they got good torpedoes, the Japanese have gotten the E-class escorts which break the ASW in the game engine (they have so many ASW weapons that they are effectively the best anti-sub weapon in the game due to how the engine does ASW routines). The Japanese would actually sink a large amount of the US sub fleet with that and ASW-trained aircraft, so the window for usefulness was quite small. Even in AI games you'll see this massive surge in allied sub deaths around the beginning of '44. The Allies still get hundreds of new subs, but they'll spend a shitload of time repairing from damage. That's part of why you see some Allied players actually using subs more like the Japanese did in real life - for supporting fleet operations and hoping for a functioning torpedo hit against a CV. Dutch subs on the other hand can be great, as long as you can use them in deep waters.

The main advantages of not going for Pearl are that he doesn't risk losing any carrier pilots, can work over everything in Manila (subs, ammo tenders, oilers, various cruisers and all kinds of other stuff that's a big asset for the Allies for trying to evacuate the Philippines) and then has the Kido Butai right there to run rampage through the PIs and DEIs in support of his invasions instead of having to bring them back all the way from Hawaii and then refuel and repair first.

Yeah, I usually end up using my US fleet boats as transports, minelayers (mine production rates are garbage though) and for observation posts around the Japanese home islands until at least 1943. They just aren't worth the fuel for normal war patrols.

My current game is in june 42, and MK 14s have claimed 60 japanese ships already, out of a total 500 sunk. (The AI is kinda stupid. Utterly incapable of responding to heavy anti-shipping air defences by flying in fighters and doing LR CAP. The entire dutch air force on lovnav out of Java along with USMC dive bombers in Port Moresby and Rabaul is murder.)

Every game should come with regular 'mash X to convince wife not to cheat on you' sections. If you fail your effectiveness is reduced for the next mission because you're distracted by thoughts of her banging a lifeguard.

I was thinking more WiTP style noticing a (-- leadership) on a combat report and wondering what the gently caress, only to dig into 6 submenus to find out that your admiral couldn't participate in the battle because you forgot to order a staff officer to go pick up his kids back in California that turn, so his wife (complete with stats, real name etc) recalled/distracted (different maluses, picked at random or influenced by Wife personality stats) your admiral that day.

That would be fun though, if you were Scrooge McDuck rich back in the day. Whats preventing you from contracting Vickers-Armstrong to build your own dreadnought? Then you can play boates in real life.

I wonder what would happen if you went to one of the big shipbuilders and asked them to build you an unarmed version of a modern warship. You'd probably go on a special government list.

I'm guessing their contracts say something along the lines of "You can't build these for any other party than the U.S. Government" Edit: But it never hurts to ask!

Pretty sure there are a handful of demilitarized ex-Soviet ships running around as private yachts. But yeah, I assume if you did that you'd get a visit or two from people wanting to know what exactly it is you want to do with it, given that the space for the weapons and sensors is still going to be there and it's not like the Chinese, Iranians or North Koreans care too much if the pay is good enough.

pthighs posted:I'm guessing their contracts say something along the lines of "You can't build these for any other party than the U.S. Government" They most definitely didn't. Vickers-Armstrong built dreadnoughts and battleships for Japan, Brazil, Turkey, etc, etc. There's likely nothing stopping a certain very rich individual from building his own battleship.

Normally I would boo and hiss at anyone replaying a turn in a two person game, but in this AAR that would just be rubbing salt in a lot of existing wounds. The game is probably not much fun for the Allied player as it is, let alone with another four CVs scratched.
