I'm not surprised that Toni is worried, and I am concerned for her. This is just the worst possible place to be discussing sensitive matters. No-one seems to understand discretion except maybe Rebecca, who at least remembers to use code phrases. If she's created a corpse for me...I wonder if it was anyone I know? Unlikely. I reply:

quote:

Delighted to attend. Black Tie?

If she responds that the event is black tie, it means the body needs to be eaten soon - it belonged to someone who will be missed, and cannot be found exsanguinated or questions will be raised.

Speaking of people who don't understand discretion, Jamie passed me a note with an attached drawing that...borders on the pornographic, with a caption throwing my words back at me. I can feel a blush rising as I look at it, partly because of the picture and partly from anger at myself for caring. I read the note and feel worse for her. For us both. She has not learned that I am not to be trusted. I want to rush back to her straight away, but I can still see the horror on her face as she realized my intent was to kill her. Even if I resist that urge for the rest of time I will still remember that. I eat the mint, and fold the papers away into my bag.

Benjamin is talking to the new boy, Alex. I have my concerns about him - he is very controlled and seems clever. Best to find out sooner rather than later if he could be a threat. The flavour of the mint stirs the Hunger, and I sit with it, asking what it thinks of Alex - a threat, or a meal?

Turning Bonnie On Via Text 2d6+1 8

Something nice and simple, a compliment, a chance to vent... It's almost too easy, given my heritage, able to taste her unease on the wind. Still, easy usually means uninteresting. Sure, I can probably run circles around her if I put my mind to it, but trust me, that stops being fun after a while, just becomes a chore instead of a pastime. Rebecca seems like a lot more potential fun, but... there's something very off about her, and I can't quite put my finger on it.

Covering my face with my hands, so nobody can see, I let my true tongue give a few experimental licks to the air; sifting through the humidity, questing after a particular sharp taste a few rooms away. What can I learn about Rebecca? What makes her so strange?

No Boots on the Ground,
Puny Mortals!

Alex, while you're daydreaming about Rebecca, Mr Lenard calls you up front. He wants you to go down to the storage room and get the textbooks that have finally arrived for his History class. Since there's a lot of them, he offers to let you pick someone to help you. Who do you pick and why?

Also, when you look at it, you've got a text from Bonnie.

quote:

Oh, I'm fine. Really! Thanks for asking though. Lot of crazy things happening recently, and there's a lot of people worse off. How are you doing?

What do you do?
She's returning the favor by trying to help the new kid with whatever is bothering them.

Maggie, you try to focus, but the Hunger is insistent. It causes your stomach to gurgle loud enough for the people around you to turn and look. You'll need to figure out how to take the edge off before snack time, or you... well, you should just find something before snack time.

Your phone buzzes, and the response is:

quote:

Oh, you know Uncle. Always fond of dressing up to go out.

What do you do?

Ali, from what you heard, she had a pretty rough week. She ran out of the dance, bleeding. One of her friends is shunning her right now. Her (presumably former) boyfriend is missing and is wanted for "questioning." But, even with all that, you can tell what's really weighing on her mind. After all, you've seen that look before.

She's scared of her father.

Who else do you know in class that is scared of their parents? How did you find out?

Meanwhile, Bonnie's removed her arm from your shoulder to check her phone. She shoots a glance to her left towards Alex, and her cheeks turn crimson. She quickly types a reply and looks back to you,

What do you do?

Jamie, Bernie returns after delivering the letter. She gives a weak shrug and says, "I don't know what you sent her, but she seemed really torn up by it. Kinda reminded me of the married guys at work. You know, the "I shouldn't but I really want to" look?" She bites her lip again, but before she can say anything, a teen you've had some run ins with before enters the classroom. Who is it? As they hand a paper to Mr. Lenard and move towards Toby's old seat, it looks like they've been transferred into this class. Who is it? Why are you happy they're here? What do you do?

Now Anastaise has that look on her face. I'd seen it years ago back in Iraq on the faces of a few of my classmates. See their dad's had been mid-ranking baathists and when they'd lost their little bit of power and influence they hadn't taken it well and taken it out on their daughters and wives. After a while they developed the look of waiting for the next blow to land. Flinching at the slightest provocation. I'd never had to go through that myself thankfully. I mean my dad could be a bit rigid and old fashioned at times but he'd never taken his frustrations out on his family. But I could pick out that look anywhere. Not quite fear not quite resignation but the worst parts of both.

Of course she was not the only one. He was better at hiding it but I'd seen that same look on Benjamin's face briefly. I'd been stalkingattempting to learn to impersonate in the same vicinity as Jeanine. And overheard him when he'd been talking to Jeanine before he'd stepped away for a phone call to deal with some "business". Imagine my surprise to overhear him (what can I say I'm lucky the Koran didn't make curiosity a sin) answer that call. It was from his mother warning him that his father had been drinking heavily again and that for his own safety he should stay away from the family home. He looked upset and begged her to leave too but she apparently refused and he lost his temper with her.

But enough ruminations. Bonnie's just turned the most intriguing shade of red as she glances across the room towards, Oh my! Yeah, I guess I can see the attraction there. One of the better looking guys in the class. I mean I'm not an expert on relationships. Having a chaperone really cramps your style but I can tell when a girl likes a guy thank you very much. I mean I dunno how you'd go about hooking a guy in America. So I'm not the best person to talk to but there's definitely some interest on her part. Dunno why she's looking at me though. It's none of my business who she does or doesn't look at. I just hope she doesn't mind that my own stare at him lingers a little too long.

At Vicky's question I just nod silently; no need to get Mr. Lenard on my case. He's been kinda skatin' around me due to the whole, like, gunshot deal, but still. Better look like I'm workin' on poo poo, I guess. Schoolwork seems so fuckin' pointless right now.

I try to get mad at Dad whisperin' in my ears, but I just can't manage it. He's right, I'm just a leech -- gettin' my claws stuck in Vicky like I do to everybody else. And gently caress if I don't expect it to turn out badly for her too.

Ugh, that's got me thinkin' about that fuckin' night. I glance back at Mags... she's fuckin' with her phone. Guess she does have one. Huh. She hasn't said a word to me all week, and every time she walks past me, or doesn't meet my gaze, it's like ice runnin' down my back. Does she even care about, about what happened? I... gently caress, I need to talk to her. gently caress! I lean towards her a little, and try to catch her eye: "Can we like... talk? After class?" I whisper softly.

Of course Bonnie could be useful. She's quite skilled at organizing, and of course her parents have a lot of money and influence. They could do a lot of damage to the monsters with the resources at their disposal. And it's another pair of eyes and ears. Well, maybe she's less ideal at interpreting the facts, but if she wasn't perceptive at all, I wouldn't be dealing with having to lie to her about the gang thing. But it's not happening, all right? Part of tee reason she's not seeing anything, is because she's vulnerable. If I start putting her in the fight, she's gonna become a target.

Better she doesn't know anything. Just like... Davis...

gently caress.

Well, I told her to be careful and stay away from Jamie. Would that be enough. Would she believe me? And if she believed me, she might insist to get involved, and I don't want that. And maybe I just don't want to be using Rich White Guy resources to fix this problem. I mean, if I'm going to make severe moral compromises, I'd rather do them with the New Orleans gangs than with Big Business.

Raoul? Well, I don't know if he's really tough, but he's a lot more studious in school matters than me. And he has his contacts in the church. Which I still need to deal with and see about having them do their part in the Worm Binding/Destroying thing of course. Last time, well, just when I was investigating that church this whole mess really started, so I haven't really been investigating. But I should get back to investigating that, especially now that I know I might need their help.

Of course, there's the other thing. One of the gangs I'm trying to get on my side has asked me to mess with the files of one of their friends who ended up in the morgue. Apparently, Raoul works there. They asked me whether I could convince Raoul to let me in the morgue, and burn away a tattoo one the corpses there has. I might very well be able to do it.

But I won't.

Look, this deal with the gangs? I have no illusion that these people are 'misunderstood defenders of the community'. I lived in areas where they run poo poo before Katrina. They're not mindless thugs that Fox News is yapping about, but they're not nice people. They look after each other, but anyone outside, they tend to be cruel, petty, greedy and violent. Dealing with them is staining yourself. I know that going in. I'm going to do things for them, and because of the help I'll give them, some innocents will suffer. But if I can use them as front troops against the evil that's rising in this city, it'll be worth it. But I'm the one getting stained. Not Bonnie. Not Raoul. Cindy and Jennifer, they're already in this mess. And Luke is, because he followed me in, and I... don't want to go in this alone. But as the priestess, I'm the one to bear the cost.

So it's not happening. Only thing I might want from Raoul is getting in touch with those churchfolk.

I smile back at Cynthia. The words sound a bit hollow though. Were Elizabeth and I real friends? I truly wanted to help her, but we had not spoken enough to earn that name. I'm... not sure I earned that. But I put a hand on her hand on my shoulder. "Thanks. Maybe we can help each other later. But not in a classroom."

Luke comes back, and i give him a smile and take his hand. trying to guide it to my cheek. I love making those little touches. Little things that show we're 'together'. I never thought I'd be half of 'one of those' couples. We're probably going to be unbearable come Valentine's Day. "Hey babe. Good to see you're keeping an eye out.." Benjamin is a small time drug dealer, but that is obviously not my issue. My issue is he's pretty attached to Maggie. And while I don't have the ice cold hatred I have for her that I have for Jamie, she's still a danger to everyone in this school. "So, what's the deal with the new guy?"

I've experienced this before, under the sea. "She hates how I make her feel more than she loves me..." I put my head to my desk and cover myself in the darkness of my arms. What am I doing here? I'm all alone. I'm going to get captured or killed on the way back to Beck's, I know it. More men in masks, and Death, and Jeanine hiding behind her minions. I'm surprised she didn't send a bunch of them with nets and harpoons to Davis's funeral. No, the only girl my age I saw there was his ex, Maddy. She was also there alone, so we gravitated to each other--and away from Luke--and grieved together. They used to be classmates, he used the same line about how she needed some meat on her bones, and he cooked her romantic dinners, but I learned our experiences diverged when she told me how her parents made her break up with him because they eavesdropped when he came out to her "as queer." Hah! I blurted out that the shoe was on the other foot when I came out to him. There was a beat, then she said how I was lucky her parents weren't around to hear that too. I laughed, thinking it was a joke, but it wasn't, then it was? I don't know. We ended up crying then laughing together.

It was nice to be have things in common with someone again, and to, I dunno, feel the same way about someone, even someone dead. Otherwise, I never seemed to agree with anyone about anything. Mags went behind my back to make a deal with Toby and Nina, Bernie too, and she never liked Davis, and neither Beck nor Mags haven't told me at all what they're up to after what happened on Halloween. Even my goddess is always telling me all the ways I'm wrong about mortals. With Maddy for once I didn't feel like some kind of alien, with a completely unique and therefore wrong perspective shared with and understandable to no one else. At the very least there seemed to be a bridgeable gap.

Now, to my surprise, the same girl is here, and I'm trying to rub the tears out of my eyes before she notices and failing. I must look like I'm doing a cartoonish double-take... but I am glad to see her. Even with Bernie sitting next to me I still feel mostly isolated at school. Maybe my luck is changing?

Take a string

Alex, honestly, this is just too easy. Bonnie's more than happy with the attention, and she returns the complements. She even puts her hand on your shoulder for a moment and looks like she may try to kiss you! Instead, she pulls back suddenly, blushing, and says, "I guess we should get these books back. Don't want them wondering what happened to us, right?"

--------------------------------------------------------------

SCENE 2

The bell for first period rings, and it's time for Chemistry. Over the last few weeks, Mrs. Devoreaux hasn't fared as well as some of the veteran teachers. Whoever is the first one in has to switch on the lights, and that causes her to sit bolt upright. Apparently, she was relaxing in the darkness. With circles under her eyes, she blinks into the light for a moment before her eyes adjust.

With all the new people, she just decides to forgo your previous lab partners and split people up herself for the lab today. She goes down the roll, paring each two names together.

Alex & Anastaise
Benjamin & Bernie (Both trade a look of disgust)
Bonnie & Cynthia (Both look indifferent to this)
Jamie & Jeanine
Jyalili & Luke

She stops and looks around when there appears to be no one with the first name "Jyalili" in the class. She points at Ali, saying, "You're the only one who looks like you'd have a name like this. I guess the office didn't type it in correctly. Just... go partner up with Luke. I'll scratch this out, so let me know what you go by, ok?"

Maddy & Maggie
Raoul & Simon (again, indifference)
Toni & Vicky (Possibly the only pair in the room who actually are friends already.)

Once she pair everyone off, she sits down back behind her desk and gestures to the worksheets outlining what you need to do for this experiment. Then she pulls out a few white asprin and starts chewing them.

Everyone, how do you feel about your lab partner?

Alex, you had Bonnie wrapped around your little finger without a sweat, but who in the class are you actually interested in? Do you think you can juggle your interest in them AND your obligation to get Bonnie to help you with whatever the Family has in mind? What do you do?
Anastaise, stuck with the hot new boy. Could be worse, right? And on top of that, your dad says, "Oooh, don't see too many men like him anymore. He's got some promise..." What do you think he has in common with the only other boy Daddy approved of? What do you do?
Jeanine and Jamie, well. This sure happened. Do you even try to cooperate? What do you do?
"Jyalili", does this sort of thing happen often? Luke, for his part, isn't even looking at you. He's staring past you at Jeanine and Jamie, concern clear on his face. The instructions look pretty complicated, though. You don't think you can do it yourself. What do you do?
Maggie, with the Hunger sharpening your senses, you can smell faint traces of Davis (a scent you're intimately familiar with) on Maddy. In addition, the new girl has tried to cover it up with make up, but she's obviously spent a good bit of time crying recently. It's a pretty reasonable guess that she knows knew him pretty well. She doesn't seem to know you, though. Or much chemistry for that matter. She look to you and asks, "So, uh, do you know what any of this means?" What do you do?

Seriously. What the gently caress was I thinking? I cannot trust this monster, let's tell it important secrets of your powers. Of all the mistakes I made, still the worst one. And the worst is, she's most likely the one that stole my clothing. Could just be a swipe back for the 'Pelt' thing. Could be she's been trying to get into magic as well.

Of course, Jamie probably figured the same and... well, that's nice. I walk over to her, making sure my voice can carry over the sudden murmurs. "God forbid the woman might be distraught after losing three students. We expect only the finest of soulless robot-teachers in New Orleans. But I suppose I should be glad that this is a 'Jamie makes people break into tears' day, rather than a 'Jamie beats someone near to death' day."

It can't hurt to remind people of what had happened, and inform the new people in the class. And if it pisses Jamie off? Bonus. I think I can handle what she might dish out, and if she gets expelled, well, she's at least away from these people. In the meantime, there's worksheets to do.

Christ, can't Jamie and Jeanine go one goddamn second without bitchin' at each other? And poor Mrs. Devoreaux... she does not deserve this poo poo. What a cocksucker. I stare at the table and bite my lip -- don't say anything, Ana, you're just gonna make it worse, just gonna make it worse.

But then the new boy sits at my table and gently caress me, if he ain't gorgeous as all hell. Huh, Camillo, I think Mr. Anseli has a brother or friend or somethin' named Camillo, comes into the restaurant to talk to him sometimes. Maybe Alex's related to that guy somehow? He's definitely Italian, that hair... for a second, I think of Toby, like a punch in the chest, but he's gone, girl, gone. I sigh miserably and hope he doesn't notice.

...aaaand he doesn't, 'cause he's busy starin' at Jamie. Goddamnit. It's pissin' me off, so I shift in my seat a little and push my hair back over my ear to try and draw his attention. Hey, dude! Look over here! Stop watchin' the freakshow and pay attention. "S, so - uhm. You got the book? 'cause I can, like. Show you what we're supposed to be workin' on." gently caress, Ana, you can be cooler than that. Not much, but a little. "Seein' as Mrs. Devoreaux's, you know, off gettin' high or whatever." Oh yes. Much better.

I don't have an answer for that, except for clenching my firsts to prevent my hands from wrapping around her throat and applying pressure until the problem goes away. Gotta keep in mind. That's how she handles things. Hurt and abuse people, then act the innocent little thing. The goal was never to get to her. The goal was to make her look like a psychopath in front of the class. Blaming me for the death of Elizabeth at the hands of gangsters is likely to help me there, since what sane person would expect me to have prevented that.

Doesn't mean I'm not trying to develop spontaneous eye lasers while looking at the back of her head.

But gently caress it. Don't get mad, get to work. The loving rot that is in this school needs to get isolated. And actually, there's opportunity here. I meet Luke's eye and give him a reassuring nod. He's the hothead, I'm the coldhearted one. He can't do his part if he has to look if he's gonna have to back me up in a fight. Jamie went to Bernie. Very well, that leaves Benjamin without a partner.

Isolate the rot. Benjamin is connected to them. Either I can convince him to step away from them, or I can have something to give me a hold on them. Motioning at him, I wave him over. "Well, Benjamin. Get over here. Her Royal loving highness apparently does whatever the gently caress she pleases in this school, but there's chemistry to do."

He comes over, and I start getting poo poo in order. Not that either of us are very good at it. So, here's the question. Do I try to warn him away from them, or do I try to see if I can get information from him. Well, he's a petty little drug dealer, and he might very well be pretty involved already.

"So, how have you and Maggie been doing, lately?" I say, even as I slowly try to do the chemistry right. I don't try to understand all the things I do. There are the instructions, you follow them and the correct things happen. Don't question it. Probably the wrong attitude for science, but I am a priestess. "She seems to not be on speaking terms with Jamie there. Which is a good thing considering what happened to Davis. Hoping you're looking out for her like a gentleman, Benji. Jamie's dangerous."

Now, that is interesting. Extremely interesting. No wonder she's like this if she went through all of that in such a short time. I'll have to investigate further, especially if she's an enemy of this Jeanine girl who's affiliated with my father's enemies. Even if she's just a friend, not a conquest, she'll be well worth the pursuit! I start to think of how to approach her, what to say to try to win the confidence of someone whose wounds are so often salted...

But my thoughts on that front are scattered when I see movement in the corner of my eye. Oh, hello, Anastaise. What is it with this class, and all these women who make me lose my composure, make my cold blood run quick, if not hot?

"Well, dunno about y'all," I drawl with a grin, "But if the teach doesn't want to be here, why bother wasting time with some dumb chemistry? I can think of far more interesting things to do, can't you?"

Jeanine, Benjamin stops flipping through his notes and snorts a bit of laughter before saying, "Look, next time you want to try and butter me up, at least try keep the loathing off your face. I know you don't like me none, and you like my friends even less. Anyway, why you been hanging out with my kind of people lately?"
Benjamin takes a string on you.

Maggie, Maddy looks at Jamie and then back at you and says, "Man, she was nice at funeral and all, but that was pretty mean." She looks at you and says, "Well, I guess we're gonna need some help, and thanks to Jamie, we can't ask the teacher. Anyway, I'm new, so who do you think we should ask?" What do you do?

Jamie, Bernie looks grateful for the rescue, for sure. She starts working through the experiment. But, as you watch the beaker bubble, you drift off. You hear a woman sobbing and retching. When you open your eyes, you're staring out of the toilet in the faculty restroom, staring up at Mrs. Deveraux's retched face. You hear your goddess whisper to you, pride obvious in her voice, "You've grown cold since you've been here, and even rarer, you've become wise, my dear servant. Crushing her in such a manner was inspired." Before she can continue, your vision starts spinning as your teacher flushes the toilet. The sobbing and roar of the water grows louder and louder until Bernie finally pokes you in the arm, causing you to jump and come back to yourself. Wide eyed, she asks, "Are you ok? I lost you there for a moment." What do you do?
The Ocean spends a string to herald the Abyss

Ali, Luke shushes you and keeps watching and listening. In fact, you feel like joining him. Jeanine's pretty cool and in control, after all. You watch Jamie and her spar briefly, but neither one of them really seems to get that far under the other's skin. And Luke's watching both of them like a hawk. A very fit, handsome hawk... Man, wouldn't it be nice to be her for a little? You'd have people respecting you or even fearing you. And you'd have Luke too. Sure, he seems a little slow, but he's loyal and strong. Certainly not smart enough to see through your disguise. Maybe you could give it a shot at snack time. After all, you've got her outfit in your locker, right?

Once the two of them split apart, he looks to you and says, "Ok. I guess we can get to work." He's still barely noticing you, though. What do you do?

Finally she answers, "Banana."

I wish I knew how she did it. Still I have that outfit of hers I ahem "borrowed" in my locker. And who knows what kinds of things people would tell Jeanine that they wouldn't tell the new girl. I mean it's not like I was going to do her any harm was it? I just wanted to have a little fun and learn something. And then there was Luke tall handsome muscular, a little slow upstairs of course but hey you can't have everything. He seemed pretty intent when staring at her but was it err I'm not sure how to put this in English actually. Was he interested in her for her looks or was there some business reason? Still maybe I could learn a bit more about him. Or at least test his devotion to her.

The circumstances are confusing to me, but it's been a whole week since I've held anyone or kissed anyone, so I try to quick finish up the lab alone, grab both our packs--stupid Jeanine, I can't even leave our paperwork on the teacher's desk for fear of her stealing it for her black magic--and follow her. It's when I'm filling in the last results as fast as I can, looking forlornly at the pile of stuff I'm supposed to clean and pack back up, that I see the new boy approaching. I speak first.

"Alex! Could you help me with this mess? Bernie, My friend who just ran out, I don't want to leave her alone. I mean, I don't want to fail chemistry, but all those deaths and stuff happened, and she's always been there for me... I love her like a... I'd do anything for her." I sound a little desperate because my feelings are all mixed up. Bern likes dry kingdom boys, doesn't she? Not freaks like me! What am I supposed to do for her, if she's even still there?

Anan's already brought the rest of the materials back to your desk, though. And for the briefest of moments, you see a flicker of a shadowy face whispering in her ear.

Trick of the light? ...Maybe, but you really don't think so... She's looking at you expectantly now, but you can't shake the feeling that you're being watched by someone else. What do you do?

His gaze turns hard as he adds, "You gotta promise that nothing's going to happen to Mags, though. Anything does, and I'm going to come after you. Clear?"

Meanwhile, Luke seems to be trying to brush the new girl off. What do you do?

Luckily she's come over to my table; I don't think I could stand sittin' with that creep Luke today. I move over a bit and let her sit down. "Here, we've gotta crush this stuff up first if you wanna do that. In the, uh, mortar thing over here." gently caress me, Ali's so... normal. Reasonable. Alex, the clean up and fudging is straightforward, leaving you a few moments to think about what to do about Ana. And then the answer is obvious. Just tell the truth. Well, mostly the truth. Tell Ana that you were helping Jamie because she was worried about her friend. Add that you copied her results so you two can just relax for the rest of class. It sounds reasonable, makes you look like a good guy, and helps Ana out. It's perfect!

I remember how I first had dry kingdom sex with Mags right before I first wanted to get revenge on Jeanine, how it softened my heart, made me too weak to eliminate her, then she tried even harder to come between us. Well Bernie needn't worry, I won't make that mistake again.

Siren Song vs Unforgiving Jeanine: 2d6+4 10
On a 10 up, all who hear it stumble entranced toward you, though a character that takes harm will stop suddenly and gain the Condition dazed.
• On a 7-9, all who hear it stumble entranced toward you until they would face harm or physical danger, and then they choose:
S press forward and take the harm,
S stop suddenly and gain the Condition dazed.

Once I get my sex move string I'll use my one-shot Hex.

"That'd be great!" I replied. Truth be told the main thing I miss about coming here is all the friends I had to leave behind. I wonder if they were all still all right.... Sorry it's still taking me a while to adjust. Still I seem to be making a good start on meeting new friends first Bonnie and now Anastaise who was still willing to be my friend even after she'd um caught me changing. Still it would be nice to find out more about Ana she was obviously having some sort of problem with her family, maybe I could help her out with it. Besides it'd be nice to get out of our too crowded house and have a bit of privacy even if it was for more of this stupid chemistry stuff.

Still at least the way Ana explained it made a lot more sense and I was quite happily mixing away, and over on our table Luke seemed to have all the chemical bits and bobs bubbling nicely. Maybe i'd actually scrape through this with some sort of passing grade. Ugh that new guy was staring at Ana now, doesn't he ever stop he'd already been staring at Bonnie and then Jaime? was it and now he was looking at Ana. What a creep.

There, yes... calm down, it'll all be well. "Sorry, babe," I say with a smile as I head back over to Anastaise and... Jyalili, was it? "She needed some help, she was all panicked about her buddy, and I got her results, so we don't actually have to do any work either. Can just sit back and relax for the rest of class, do something actually fun instead, like I said before." I pass my eyes over both, smiling.

Jyalili was the one who gave me a stare in homeroom, and there is something about her, her honey skin, her eyes... "And you know what they say - two's a pair, three's company. The more the merrier, right?"

Turning on Ali, too! 2d6+1 9
