My problems with reddit are the upvote system, for the reasons you guys already touched on - it's impossible to actually discuss anything, dissenting opinions get silenced regardless of quality and it reinforces little cool cliques - and a younger userbase, because teenagers are and always will be poo poo. It`s a decent place for niche discussion, tho, especially for games. I feel like it has replaced GameFAQs in a lot of ways.

The only places on there you can discuss anything is in subreddits that are too small for the votes to do anything and/or that are narrow enough that there aren't a lot of controversies. But I mean, eh, just don't even try. Use it to find relevant links to things you're interested in, and/or cat gifs, and leave it at that. Find somewhere else to have conversations. Other than that, the fact that it's a massive site where anyone can get an account in ten seconds and there are way too many subreddits for anyone to keep track of means you're going to run the gamut from decent to knots of undiluted . Thankfully most of it is just dumb and not directly offensive.

Reddit was decent on small subreddits based on specific games, like /r/XCOM and /r/grimrock, but nowadays they're just dumping grounds for people trying to make LPs. The bigger subreddits are entirely useless because everyone will upvote memes and downvote anything else. I saw a post where some guy compared American police to the SS, and said "At least the SS had a noble goal"

Yeah, you can leave comments, but it isn't anywhere near the forum style, and I like being able to have conversations with thw LPer. I might be a weirdo. That's actually something I've been thinking about lately. The thread/community aspect of the LPs here is something I never see come up in SA vs. YouTube discussions, but it is one of the main differences when you think about it. The posters here can contribute to the LP in various ways like fan art, or things like Orange Fluffy Sheeps's low level run of FF7 in Elentor's thread, or the legislatures in the various Paradox threads. The LPer is just the biggest contributor to the LP. Contrast that with YouTube where communities are going to spring up around an individual's channel since that's just the way YouTube is structured. Since they don't have a central location to post LPs YouTubers kept finding more obnoxious ways of generating attention for their videos so they wouldn't get lost in the pile. It's only gotten worse since financial incentives were added to the mix.

Interaction with the thread is the main reason I post LPs here. I'm member of another LP Forum which is a great community but interaction is minimal due to a small member base. SA on the other hand is huge enough that you'll find someone willing to participate in most threads.

I'm up there with the community part of SA contributing to quality LPs. You end up basically having a shared experience with not only the LPer, but also a bunch of other people from the same community and possibly same fandom who can all talk and collaborate and share ideas and humor. YouTube is closer to film or TV, where the content creator spends most of their time apart from the audience and rarely interacting with them (and never really giving personal attention to any member's opinion), and the rest of the audience is mostly a faceless conglomerate occasionally shouting louder than someone else.

On youtube I just watch the videos and ignore the comments. On SA, even if an LP is in the archives I like to go fish up and read the whole topic rather than just the OP's updates. The community makes a huge difference. Sometimes they're a lot of what makes the thing bearable in the first place.

It's kind of why I prefer Twitch streaming to YouTube in some ways. At least with a Twitch stream there is some interaction/communication with the "Let's Play" Especially if it's like a "By Committee" sort of stream using a game like Prison Architect, Kerbal Space Program, etc. that makes the interaction natural and can be tied into the game.

Republic Commando was, albeit flawed in different ways, a really neat idea that I wish got another whack at. I also like the ideas of "Devs Play" and talk about the games they worked on while playing it years after it was released. It's kinda neat. Edit - Slowbeef, you should probably skype some pro-tips for Snakebird to Totalbiscuit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2Ec_ozQ4tc Man, Best Friends' Freedom Planet LP is something to behold. I've never seen two people so giddy and having so much fun with a game, and it's refreshing seeing FP finally being given the praise it deserves.

Personally I've always thought Freedom Planet as a game best held off on LPing until the Torque/Spade/Milla's Adventure Mode DLC comes out; that way, the LPer could dedicate a single video to each stage and highlight where paths or bosses differ between all five characters, instead of, say, doing full playthroughs as each character and all the redundancy that'd come with that, or a single playthrough as one character (typically Lilac) that'd miss out on the stuff the other characters go through (eg: entire character-specific stages like Aqua Tunnel, Trap Hideout or Pangu Lagoon). Unfortunately, it's been a while since I've heard anything about the status of that update. I know Torque was playable at PAX South and East (slowbeef briefly mentioned his hands-on with him in a Retsutalk), but he's not been made available to us alpha/beta testers as-yet. Spade was playable in several stages in alphas/betas, at least...

Even as I sighed on replays as the easiest panda riding a robot boss in the world dragged out ten times as long because Cats can't double jump and gotta rely on wall leaps to hit them half the time. Aside from "Boss optimized for Lilac" moments I had a much more fun time playing as the Cat through the levels themselves. Mother loving christ, I missed Lilac's double jump so loving much on Brevon's second form. Went from "Oh that went by in 30 seconds and I didn't get hurt" to literally half my deaths for my Cat run.

From what I can figure, there are more playable characters planned for an update that have been a long time in development and also the game gets bullshit hard at the end.

Freedom Planet is a game that has multiple characters. The first one in the list, and thus the one you're most likely to use in your first playthrough, has a double jump, but the other characters do not. This means that on subsequent playthroughs you will have a difficult time adjusting to not being able to avoid all attacks by double jumping, as you no longer have that ability. The developers are planning on releasing additional characters through DLC, but have not done so yet. This is important because each character plays very differently, and some characters can play through levels that other characters do not. The final boss is very hard, whereas most of the game before that is fairly easy. I hope this explains everything you need.
