steinrokkan posted:It's just one of the many looter videos. The one that has literally changed me for the worse was a video of a bombardment victim who got her legs blown off, yet remained somewhat lucid for a while - and even before she died, Novorussian looters took her jewellery and other valuables. They swarmed around the dying, desperate woman like vultures. I'd never heard of that one, and I'd honestly be surprised if anybody had survived the crash at all, but I don't disbelieve that somebody would have. If you have a link to a story on it (or the video, I suppose), I'd appreciate that as well. Not that I want to see that poo poo, but it's pertinent to what I'm studying in school so it's important. efb nvm

Svoboda played a pretty prominent role in the maidan.

Seriously, fantastic stories of horrific war crimes being committed by "the bad guys" date back to the dawn of history and are a common way to dehumanize the enemy and encourage further violence against them. I don't at all relish seeing evidence of war crimes, but I think evidence should be provided to keep people from spreading false rumors about these terrible things supposedly occurring.

When I watch that video, I'm seeing some soldiers who are trying to come to terms with the fact that some idiot in a SAM truck just shot down a civilian airliner. I'm not saying looting didn't happen later, but the video shows those guys trying to get an idea who was on the plane.

So, OP, I get that you're concerned with human rights violations against your own people, but isn't it time for a truce? No matter if you believe or understand it, both sides are responsible for atrocities - and, I'll be the first to admit it, Ukraines volunteer groups are responsible for a lot of them - and if you entered this conflict to prevent repression of people, it clearly hasn't had the intended effect. Do you honestly not think your people would be better off with moving behind the front and living with their own, and the Ukrainian speakers could then do the same?

You have to understand that "doing things that make sense and benefit everyone" is just not a reality in Ukraine. Not now, not 3 years ago, not 10 years ago, not 20 years ago, not 50, not 100, not 1000. Ukraine has always been a shithole filled with people who are only doing whats good for their own self interest and screwing over everyone else. Ukraine is a place where there is no secret ballot, even when there is voting, and nobody understand why that is bad. Ukraine is a place where dynasties openly lord over anything of value.Ukraine is a place where you can't do business with strangers, where you have to work through your extended family just to do what in the West are ordinary things. Ukraine is a pit of dogs trying to rip scraps of sausage out of each other's teeth. Everyone with competence, half a brain and a soul has left. All the other people still there either have only 2 of those 3 things, or are trying to leave right now.

For whatever it is worth I can acknowledge that to some degree, he has a point. My sister in law confirms things like her sister's employer directing her how to vote. I believe that stuff is a direct result of being under Russian influence but that's another thing. But still doesn't mean trying to make it better isn't a goal, however difficult.

Not as such, but step back and take in the larger perspective: you've had it your way, and it's lead to a whole lot of dead kids. If your commanders want to prove that this is not just a petty influence grab on Putin's behalf, why not let the UN establish an occupation and make an attempt at a diplomatic settlement?

In hindsight, now that millions of people have been displaced, thousands dead and the region completely destroy, do you think it was worth it? What would the region have looked like if the war had never happened? There have been no ethnic cleansing against Russian speaker in the rest of Ukraine yet. Not even the anti-russian language laws were passed in the end. It really seems unlikely that some organized ethnic cleansing was ever going to take place against Russian speakers. Do you ever feel betrayed by the Russian government? They provide just enough support to keep Donetsk alive, but never enough to win the war. It seems like they are just exploiting the war situation and trying to keep it going for their own goals, with not regard for people like you.
