These guys are Lebanese, but I guess it's enough for young people to go with the literal instruction not to drink alcohol rather than the later interpretation that it include all psychoactive substances (I think that is how it goes anyway, could be wrong).

Much like all religious dietary rules, what is and is not haram is very up to interpretation. There are young Muslims who follow strict dietary rules, and old Muslims who are more relaxed about it. It's up to the individual, really. (unless you live in a place controlled by fundamentalists but then what food you're allowed to eat is probably the least of your worries)

That link is pro-click, I never considered what SA might look to people on other forums. It reads like news reports or current affair stories where some news-worthy event started on an online forum and journalists have to try to explain what a message board is and why this particular forum is unique to a lay-audience except they don't know either so they're forced to interpret pretty innocuous statements and banter as coded language or something more sinister.

All I learned from that dumb Reddit thread full of 14 year olds is that SA is apparently out of cash. Maybe they should take a leaf out of the Casino book and start offering free poo poo to raptorfag and iwc to come back and start throwing $20/day each for the cause

I wonder if the changes like killing LF and changing GBS caused a few people to leave. Or maybe forums are less relevant to people these days.

Memento posted:It's the second one. Everything is being used less in favour of instant-gratification social media. People used to post in these forums that they would now post on social media. GBS used to be a lot of weird but relatively engaging personal interest stories as people described their lives and things that were happening to them. When I joined, I recall a thread where someone was posting from within a city block that had been evacuated and for some reason he either ignored or wasn't informed and he was posting pictures of deserted streets and the police cordon. Or someone else who posted that they were getting ebay scammed from someone claiming to want to purchase their computer so he made a fake computer out of cardboard and weighed it down with rocks so the scammer would have to pay extra postage costs. Like, it wasn't anything important but reading these stories was a good way to pass time but now people post these sorts of stories on their own social media and SA has just become a lot less personal and interesting as a result.

I think it's pretty natural, it's hard to stay fresh without reinventing yourself over and over, and the average age of its users has probably increased at a rate that comprises a solid chunk of the age of the forum itself. Twelve to thirteen years ago when I first started lurking here the internet was a vastly different place as well, content aggregators weren't the "front page" of the internet, it was mostly created in house, and that's where SA came to the fore - people were creating and sharing poo poo within a much smaller community grouping. So potato cannons, flame throwers, freaking out about bee hives on swings, etc etc, that disseminated far less easily than it does nowadays and it was easier for a single forum to stand out. Nowadays when people create content like that they always have this idea of it going viral, and so they go to the places where that happens (because they have millions of active users, rather than thousands). Another consideration is that as you age you tend to want to do less crazy poo poo, so less interesting stuff is happening, and less new people are attracted to it. I don't really see a problem with that, though I'm not invested enough to care either way it goes. As far as communities and discussion-based websites go, I'd take stagnant SA over "vibrant" Reddit any day of the week. You can tell at a glance what happens to a site when it attracts hundreds of thousands of maladjusted privileged teens. Then I'd imagine the content generated by Reddit's users pales as a percentage of the whole in comparison to that created by SA members as a % - it's a content aggregator and marketing platform for business on the whole, not a community or a content generation enterprise Sulla Faex fucked around with this message at 11:31 on Sep 25, 2015 |

Yeah the naked king of shoreditch is a good example of one of the final hurrahs, at least as far as it goes in my mind. One of these things where you can connect to people living interesting scenarios halfway across the world without it feeling like you're just another audience member watching something on the news (complete with twitter feed). Reddit and sites like that are super mass media, which have their place but we're comparing apples and oranges

Reddit's culture isn't helped by the fact that its owners/admins are a bunch of dipshit Libertarians who needed to be pressured by loving CNN to close down a borderline child pornography subreddit, and even now see no problem with hosting hate subreddits like "r/CoonTown" and, at least last time I checked, actively subsidise said hate subreddits by not running advertising on them. on the plus side Tony Abbott is dead and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, orally hosed a dead pig.

And shielding multiple massive subreddits (many of which probably still exist in some form) dedicated entirely to the active sexual harassment of women, sharing stolen illegal photos and videos of women naked or having sex and acting like they're not real people or that it's not a crime because the person's job has them stand in front of a camera more frequently than others do. Pretty sinister stuff, and the Reddit management's tacit approval and active defense of this behaviour is helping make the internet (and the world in general) a worse place just by how much capacity they have to shape public discourse and what is considered 'acceptable'
