Would I be dumb for buying a ZJ with 200K milage on the odometer. It has the 4.0L engine, it appears to have no rust but has some rocker panel damage and a cracked rear bumper.

I also wouldn't mind any sage advise with regards to replacing a fuel sending unit (with a Bosch 67658) since I'm about to go start that now.

Well, I got my sending unit out, but broke both the hanger bolts in the process so I need to either buy a pair from the dealership tomorrow or head out to the junkyard to see how clean the Atlanta Jeeps are.

Yeah something is up with that one--all the mangled panels around the hood are sketchy. The price is a little too low IMHO too given the year and mileage.

The hitch bolts don't hold anything else except some dumb heat shields on so go for it. Also they go into a nut strip you can buy brand new so if you really run out of luck you can just buy a new one and forget you ever broke all the bolts off in it or ground the heads off of them all or something.

Also buy some new J-bolts (part number J3240023) and just cut the old ones with bolt cutters instead of unthreading nylock nuts over 6 inches of nasty threads. The nuts you need are 3/8-16 nylocks (I prefer stainless but anything goes) and a regular old 3/8 grade 8 washer and both are cheap at home depot.

You'll want new hose clamps for the fill and vent tubes as well. I like to undo the end at the fill neck not the end at the tank because there's better access and it's easier to thread the hoses through the frame rail already on the tank than it is to finagle them onto the tank while pulling them as far through the frame rail as you can.

I usually take the old hose clamps off with carefully measured visegrip/diagonal cutter violence and install brand new ones.

Top Hats Monthly posted:

Also, with the 4.0L, what mileage should I say no sale if the body isn't rusted? The ones I've found out-of-state, not rusted all seem to exceed 180K miles
Any mileage, make sure the cold idle oil pressure is 35 bare minimum, 40 preferred minimum, hot idle should be at least 15, preferably at least 20, and operating pressure at 40 or higher. As long as it doesn't make bad noises all of those are probably true.

The transmissions are garbage in those, not the engines.

Also remember that the plastic door cladding and rocker cladding hides some gnarly rust real well. I have taken the plastic off and found no metal behind it before.

Late 90s chrysler wiring is far better than anything AMC or early 90s Chrysler ever dreamed of so no.

And on the clamps I'm talking about, it's usually pretty easy. Grab the tightening screw/turnbuckle part with a pair of good pliers or a long reach set of dykes and give it a good solid twist/yank and it usually breaks off right there.

Yeah definitely cut off the old bolts, I worked off my old nylocks with a ratcheting box-end and they were miserable. I also was able to find some long-enough Jbolts at a specialty bolt place in my area for a few bucks each. As a side note, I've noticed a lot of the OEM bolts in junkyards (like 75%) are bent near the top of the threads, as were mine. What's up with that?

Also Kastein your avatar is like a disco tonight, did Aggro Craig get off probation or something? :v:

I like the first one the most--it looks pretty clean and the price is kind of in the ballpark for a dealer (for reference I paid $3500 for my '99 XJ with 140k miles in a private party sale a few years ago). Only gotcha with that year is the head casting issue that made the head prone to cracking: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1076299 Other folks might be able to chime in on how bad an issue that is and what to worry about.

edit: The rear springs on that first one do look like they're sagging a bit (notice how close the rear tires are to the fender vs. the front tires). It's not a major issue but just something to nitpick and help deal them down. Eventually you'll probably want to replace the springs.

gently caress no on that WJ - $7k is delusional. I paid $6k for a mint '03 Limited with the 4.7HO and 124k miles. Mods don't add value, and even if they did, there's not $5k worth of mods on that $2k heap.

I was hoping you'd post a bunch of beat up built 4x4s with hillbilly suspensions :(

This one looks pretty good to me - but I'd say it's at least $1k overpriced. 180k miles should be a good bargaining chip, along with the ding on the front bumper

Some people will tell you not to buy a anything with the 5.2, and 200k might be a lot on that motor. I'd say it's overpriced.

This one is parts-only, no title. Would you want to mess with that?

This one looks pretty good but is stupid at the price - Dude put too much work into it and is trying to recoup as much as possible. 200k is a lot of life on a Minnesota truck too I think.

Sorry, that wasn't much help.

So I picked up a jeep finally.

2002 TJ Sport 5 sp standard with 177000km (about 110K miles) on it. $3000 CAD. Has some rust blisters on the fenders but honestly the best shape one I found in my price range. Hard and soft top included, also running boards (not attached obviously). Needs brake hard lines redone for safety inspection. I'm going to pick up the Omix Ada hard line kit from Amazon and hopefully have it insured and on the road sometime in the next week. :)

Was quite fun driving it home. I think I'm going to like this.
