Okay, so after extensive research into the soundtrack (read: listening to it a whole bunch) I've put together what I think are all the recurring motifs in the soundtrack. Which I will now explain in exhaustive detail. Main Motifs Undertale Theme This is, obviously, the main theme of the game. It's clearest in the very first track, Once Upon A Time, and divides neatly into three sections. The full track appears in: Once Upon A Time, Home (which starts with the third section), Undertale (obviously), Fallen Down Reprise, Reunited, and jumbled up in Hopes And Dreams, and Last Goodbye. The first and second sections appear together in: Start Menu, Hotel, and Can You Really Call This A Hotel. The first and third sections appear together in SAVE The World. The first part is found by itself in the end of Bring It In Guys and in Good Night. There is a variant on the second part that apperas in Snowdin Town and Confession (the variant starts with the first four notes playing the same). Worth noting also is that Final Power is a section of SAVE The World played in reverse. Theme of the Underground I should point out the names of the themes are just things I came up with. I call this the theme of the Underground because it's so pervasive - you hear it first in Ruins, but it also turns up in Waterfall, Quiet Water, NGAHHH, Spear Of Justice, An Ending, Don't Give Up, Respite, Bring It In Guys, But The Earth Refused To Die, and Battle Against A True Hero. The vague tune you can hear in Mysterious Place seems to be taken from this theme too. Battle Theme The main melody of the combat in the game - obviously in Enemy Approaching, but also gets used in Dogsong, Temmie Village, Tem Shop, and Stronger Monsters. The drumbeat from Enemy Approaching is used in Anticipation, which is slowed down heavily for the genocide music. I think Dogsong is similarly edited to create Woofenstein, for the Endogeny battle. Character Motifs Flowey's Theme Turns up in all the places you'd expect - Your Best Friend and Your Best Nightmare as well as Hopes And Dreams, SAVE The World and Last Goodbye. It's slowed down heavily for the "but nobody came" screens on Genocide. Toriel's Theme In Fallen Down, the reprise of Fallen Down and quoted in Bring It In Guys (since that's a medley of the character themes). Sans' Theme First appearing in "sans.", it gets remixed for It's Raining Somewhere Else and the Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans. Papyrus' Theme Nyeh Heh Heh and Bonetrousle, which also gets quoted in Bring It In Guys and The Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans. Undyne's Theme Undyne's music makes heavy use of the Underground theme but the other section of it turns up in NGAHH, Spear Of Justice and in Bring It In Guys. The latter section in Spear of Justice - with the trumpets - gets used in Waterfall and in Battle Against A True Hero. Alphys' Theme Alphys, the track, is a song split into two parts. The second part is used for She's Playing Piano, while the first is the basis of Bird That Carries You Over A Disproportionately Small Gap. The whole thing is remixed for Here We Are. Mettaton's Theme Metal Crusher comes in two parts, which I'm lumping together as Mettaton music. The first part of it you can hear in It's Showtime, Live Report and Death Report. The second part turns up in Last Episode and Death By Glamour, and was also used in (or comes from) a fan track Toby made for Noisemaster in Cucumber Quest. Mettaton's Song The song in Oh! One True Love also gets used in Oh! Dungeon, Oh My... and For The Fans. Asgore's Theme Bergentruckung and ASGORE share strong similarities which get quoted back in Bring It In Guys. Asriel's Theme Memory is the first place this gets played, and again in His Theme. It is the basis for the guitar line in Undertale. Flowey's Other Theme A simple three-note progression that appears in You Idiot, Your Best Nightmare, and in Burn In Despair. Other Motifs Ghostly Theme I'm sure you already know this one - Ghost Fight, Mad Dummy, and Spider Dance all use the same music. Pathetic House uses a small section from this theme too. Heartache Toriel's boss music is also remixed for ASGORE. Determination The Game Over music is also remixed in ASGORE. Snowy Snowy is a track that gets used for Snowdin Town and in Bring It In Guys. It is pitch-shifted in one of the amalgam tracks. Tension The tune in Unnecessary Tension sounds similar to that in Premonition, but it may just be me. Tenuous. Uwa!! There are three tracks in the soundtrack named Uwa!! (So Holiday, So Temperate and So HEATS) which I think get played when you plug in a controller in various different seasons. It bears a similarity to the first half of Mettaton's theme, as well as the below: Friendship Most recognisable as the Dating music (Dating Start and Dating Fight) it is also used for the Shop theme. Danger The track titled Undyne splits into two parts. The melody in the second part is also used in Dating Tense. The first part is played faster in Run!. The small melody at the end of Run! may be the same two chords as in Small Shock. I'm not sure on that but if so it's neat. Hotland Anthem The melody from Another Medium turns up again in Core and in Bring It In Guys. The Core The track titled CORE forms the basis of Death By Glamour and is also quoted in Bring It In Guys. Martyr's Theme On a genocide route you might notice the similarity between Battle Against A True Hero and The Power Of -NEO-. I'm not certain on this but I think the theme in Amalgam might be based on this too, with a bunch of notes missing. Unmatched Melodies After all that, there's a few pieces of music that only appear to turn up in one place. Quite a bit of Dummy! seems to be unique. Ghouliday (it's Jingle Bells). Thundersnail. The second part of Death Report. Wrong Enemy. The first part of Respite. The first part of Reunited. I'd be keen to see if anyone can pick out similarities between these and any other tracks, or spot other connections I missed. I'm sure I haven't caught everything. I haven't flipped back and forth between them, but I really feel like Snowy and Another Medium share the same melody and structure, making for a weird sort of symmetry. Also Don't Give Up and ASGORE have the same melody as the snoring song from Snowed Inn, which isn't included in the soundtrack. She's Playing Piano being the end of Alphys is really sweet, holy cow. Determination/the Game Over theme is in ASGORE, it's the piano section. Ghouliday is just Jingle Bells? And I think the opening bit of Battle With a True Hero is similar to Waterfall but with how much I've crammed the soundtrack into my brain I've lost all capacity for objective judgement. e: don't forget that Papyrus' theme is also in The Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans.
