In other news, everyone who submitted a valid list should be in the second post

besides that there's about...oh...three hours or so left until the poll closes

that doesn't mean you can't submit lists any more, that just means there's absolutely no guarantee that they will be counted

secondly, everyone who submitted a list already: your lists are now more or less locked. no editing allowed, give us time to tabulate

I did that, too. And I get the comparison, I see how it has basically the same life philosophy that Bojack does, just approaching it from a different angle, with a different focus. And I like it a lot for that reason. I still like Bojack more, though, just because Bojack's focus hits me harder than Rick and Morty's does.

First touch: Life.
Second touch: Dead again. Forever.
Maybe I'll update this with the other shows I had as runners-up and some other shows I wanted to talk about but weren't particularly worthy of even being in my top 25 but still interesting to give 150 or so words to. Even though no one will read it after the results are tallied.

10. 19-2

After a short scene at the start of the second season, the episode starts its first act with a school shooting - which itself is an uninterrupted 13 minute long take - and doesn't let up until the final moments until the shooter is killed, and the squad finally checks out for the day back at the precinct at the very end of the episode. Although the episode almost acts as a 42 or so minute long action sequence, it never glorifies any of the action in it. The episode itself was also a complete re-creation of the same episode that aired with the French-Canadian version of the show, but that doesn't make what happens any less morbid, shocking, or horrifying of an experience. Despite being a show about cops, it is not really a crime mystery show, but more of a character show that focuses on first responders and the daily ordeals they have to put up with and how it sometimes affects their lives. It's a show that shows exactly how powerful those images get imprinted into these peoples' minds, and how it can haunt them or cause other memories to come back in similar ways, and how it affects their judgement on the job or dealing with other people - even friends and family.

9. Jessica Jones

I've taken a huge dip in my liking of comic book shows over the course of the year, so to find Jessica Jones as one of the few shows I liked that was based off of a comic book is a significant deal. Perhaps it's because it really never feels like the tights-and-cape kind of superhero show - I suppose that is what I've slowly reacting to over the year - but I also find that many similar shows usually fail to produce any real thematic depth to them, or that they simply trade on really easy to digest topics that are easy to package and format for consumption and even then just skim the surface. There's nothing easy to stomach about a lot of the content on Jessica Jones, which may be why it's so enticing to watch. It's less about the struggle of how much two people can punch each other harder, and it's more about the physical and psychological scars that were inflicted on the titular character and exactly how she - very much an imperfect character - tries to overcome it. These are very important themes, theses, and messages being transmitted in the form of a comic book adaptation and is executed thoroughly without ever trying to shy away from sensitive topics. If anything, the first episode of the series is the perfect mission statement for the show. For myself, it is doubly surprising something of this calibre falls into the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at times; this feels and is almost entirely self-sufficient and definitely worth a watch regardless if you are a comic book fan or not.

8. Master of None

Maybe I'm just a sucker for a good, sappy love story. Or maybe it's because many of the topics Aziz Ansari tackles in Master of None is very relatable to a late-20s/early-30s urban-raised Asian. I was never a particularly big fan of Ansari on Parks and Recreation, but his own brand of humour comes through in Master of None very splendidly. It's also warming to hear that many others that are in this millennial-age group and are either immigrants or first-generation minorities take a particular liking to many of the topics Ansari touches on in his show as being very apt. I'm glad that avenue is open and I hope that it influences more people to add their voices to the mix. I also took a certain liking to the central romance in the show and how it showed its ups and downs, ebbs and flows, and capped it off on a very bittersweet ending that never strove to make you well up with tears, but to feel delight that it happened, but life moves on and you're all the better for it. You know, maybe I am just a sucker for a sappy love story.

7. The Leftovers

Personally, I thought the first season of the show was terrific, despite many objections to the contrary, I thought the first season instilled a good sense of despair and hopelessness that even I had to respect despite my misgivings about, for the lack of a better term, misery porn in general. The second season does away with much of it and aims for a much more hopeful tone - if anything, compare the opening credits from season one to season two, and you'll see that stark difference. It still has its moments where the characters feel perpetual hopelessness, but almost always they find a way to crest that hill and find something that makes the suffering and ordeal all worth it. Most of the time anyway. Arguably also the most improved from last season, the second season plays around with the format, jumping perspectives constantly and keeping the viewer on their toes about exactly what story they want to tell week-to-week, and leaving you wanting for those they leave off to the sidelines. It feels very much like Lost in that sense, where most of the episodes focus down on a character or set of characters and let them drive their story forward; and the characters very much drive their own stories forward rather than remain reactive.

6. The Americans

The third season does something that is sometimes hard to tackle, and that is making nearly all your characters entirely despicable but also sympathetic at the same time. Whenever the show changes perspective from one story to another, it always makes that perspective the heroic one, the one we want to root for, even when they are directly up against characters we're already familiar with and know their most intimate secrets, or we know they're about to commit some particularly heinous act. As with every other season, The Americans tackles the topics of family and marriage deftly and always from a different viewpoint; this time as parents that have to navigate the world and try to make it better for their children, their vision of the world they want them to inherit, and the obstacles they want to remove for them, even in spite of their loyalties working against these aspirations.

5. Person of Interest

Despite having to deal with fairly drastic production changes in its fourth season, Person of Interest continues to be a captivating show in both the action department, as well as being an intelligent techno-thriller (or even cyberpunk if you want to go that far). The fourth season also has arguably one of the best, if not most creative, episodes in its run to date, and it's definitely something any fan of either the show or genre needs to experience for themselves. As the show continues into its next season, it ends its fourth season with a promise that nearly everything about the show has been upended, and I hope when it returns, it delivers.

4. The 100

There are particular criticisms I feel are undeserved when speaking about The 100; one that I see the most is that the show is simply grimdark for grimdark's sake. I think that because of its post-apocalyptic setting, it will always have those comparisons drawn. But although it is the case with many post-apocalyptic shows about survival, The 100 never really shies away from forcing characters into tough decisions and the only way out is dealing with the consequences rather than trying to find ways to skirt around them endlessly. This is what has fuelled character development of the series and has paid off in spades.

3. 12 Monkeys

When you set out on a journey of revenge, you dig two graves, right? So what happens when you set out on a journey to save the world by means of time travel? I guess at that point you need to draw at least two timelines on a chalkboard, right? There's almost a stark simplicity in 12 Monkeys' time travel that I seem to favour over other time travel stories where convolution for complexity's sake is the rule of the day. 12 Monkeys trades away most of what time travel stories generally entail (alternate timelines where everything is different for effect, they still do it once or twice) and keeps it focused on their characters. At first I perplexed when the show would stop and breathe by setting almost entire episodes away from the central conflict of using time travel to solve their central conceit, but those moments also allowed their past or future ensembles to develop in different contexts. Probably the most intriguing aspect of the show is just how much the two leads, despite being separated by decades (short of time travel), they imprint so strongly on one another over the course of the first season, and just how well it shows in both the writing and performances; something so rare should be lauded, especially in an otherwise fun and engaging action/adventure show.

2. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

At first look for most people, the idea of a show titled Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is something to ignore, or even criticize. To those who take issue with the title, look no further for a show you'd actually want to watch, as this show is exactly the kind of thing that explores not just what women will do for love, but really, anyone. It's definitely a show that subverts every expectation that people will place on it in lieu of it's own form of subtlety, nuance, and specificity. Although Rachel Bloom takes nearly all the credit for acting, singing and doing a considerable amount of the writing in the show, it's also well balanced by her co-stars who all have their own pitfalls when it comes to love and how far they'll go to get it and keep it. It's a terrific and relatable show to just about anyone, and the musical numbers are impressive almost entirely on their own, though they work best because they are part of the show rather than just a simple distraction or a cheap trick to just reinforce vague themes.

1. Better Call Saul

There's something to be said about how prequels are processed or interpreted, and that's the fact that they are inherently tied to the original material and sometimes only exist in the shadow of something else. And in the case of Better Call Saul, that shadow is Breaking Bad. I think credit is due for what at first seems like a cheap prequel-spinoff-keep-the-lights-on move by AMC but rises above that. There is almost nothing important or critical that ties back to Breaking Bad in Better Call Saul without it being it's own thing, and this show almost entirely lives as its own entity. It's entirely possible to recommend Better Call Saul without having to add a caveat that you must watch Breaking Bad prior to it. The show also finds a way to divorce itself further away by being a slower, more deliberate show than the phrenetic tale of Walter White. If Breaking Bad was a tale of a man's descent into his madness and self-aggrandizement, then Better Call Saul does much of the opposite, and places Jimmy McGill in the position of someone who wants to build himself up, but has to do it despite his instincts and what people in his life expect him to be.

Wanton Spoon posted:

I've been keeping an eye on this thread because I don't watch much TV, but after watching through Bojack Horseman and falling in love with it, I've wanted to see if there are more shows like it that I'm just missing. So I've been checking the posts with Bojack in the top ten and seeing what else those posters recommend that look similar. It looked like You're The Worst fit the bill the closest (in terms of the type of tone I'm looking for, which is basically "depressed people attempting to forge better relationships") and tended to get ranked even higher than Bojack, so I've watched the first seven episodes of the first season, and... so far I'm just not seeing it.

Like, I get that everyone is a mess in both shows, and the humor in both shows depends on that. But while Bojack makes it fairly clear from the first episode that no one in the show is healthy and that things are only going to go downhill for them from there, You're The Worst doesn't seem to have that level of self-awareness. It's like it's attempting to acknowledge that everyone is a mess, but it's also celebrating how much of a mess they are. Like it's implying that the characters can keep doing what they're doing and still be happy in the end. The overall tone seems to be, "Yeah, these people are 'bad', you know, if you go by what SOCIETY says. But society is full of ignorant sheeple unwilling to be honest with themselves. In reality, don't all the drugs and infidelity make life a lot sexier and more fun?"

So for those that gave You're The Worst a high ranking, do you see what I'm talking about, and does the show move past this tone eventually? Or am I just missing something that other people are seeing in it, or what? Because right now, I'm not sure I have the patience to watch through much more of it.

YTW S1 was my top spot last year too, because I think it's less about judgment or rebellion and this adult idea of settling in to one's own skin while trying to accomodate everyone else's idiosyncracies and how that makes relationships difficult. I think, and what I feel watching it is, that it's not about letting broken people be lovely, but it's more of an acknowledgement that at any time, anyone - especially you - can be the worst given the right circumstances. And you probably have been. A lot. And you have to find the humor in it or you'll never leave the house. And it's not just the visible trainwrecks that are fuckups, it's the "normal" people too, and some of the people you'd think were super hosed up have their poo poo together in a surprising way. I guess for me nothing in the show suggests happy endings to come for these people, just a continual struggle to get past their own poo poo, and that's relatable as gently caress. I think the tone of the show is documenting the things people do to comfort themselves, for better or worse.

I advise that you see it through and without giving too much away that you haven't seen in the blurbs on this list there is a seismic shift in the tone very early into the second season and it's orchestrated in a way that makes the most sense only if you've had the first season to get used to the characters and their chemistry, much like the way you peel away layers as you get deeper into a relationship. As I've said, it's the most honest show on television today and I don't think there's any other show that trusts its audience as much (besides maybe Louie).

Turns out all I had to do was watch one more episode of You're The Worst and it turned itself around for me right away. Now I'm getting into the second season.

I don't mind giving a show time to prove itself, I guess I just wished it had dropped more hints on what direction it was going.

Friends, gather round! Yes, come in, come in! I see you hiding at the back, you can get closer! Everybody settled? Good. Welcome to the TV IV Official Goon Poll of 2015! Once again, the brightest minds of TV IV (and also Zaggitz) came together to put all the television produced in 2015 under their critical eye where they could weigh up each show's true merit before throwing that out entirely and voting for professional wrestling. Oh, I kid, I kid. We'll talk about the results in a moment but first let's crunch some numbers.

This year saw a big resurge in participation after 2014's fallow year with 68 people submitting lists. Between you you named 134 shows and while that number is stable when compared to previous years those shows crossed 47 different networks, which I imagine must surely be a record. Another thing worthy of note is that 24 shows were listed #1 at least once! Peak TV is in effect! It was also an international affair as well with shows coming from as far and wide as Australia, Sweden, France and Japan. All in all, 8 countries were involved over 4 separate continents!

So let's talk about results. We're going to do things a little differently this year. From the bottom up to #51 everything will be like before but once we break in to the top 50 ties will be broken by the countback rule, i.e. whichever show received the most top spot places will come out ahead followed by most second places and so on. The reason for this will become apparent in time. As it is, here are some things we need to think about :

  • In 2014, Hannibal came through a hotly contested race to take the prized #1 position. With 2015 being its final season, can it go out in style by holding on to the top spot for a second year?
  • And what of the show that came oh so close to winning it all last time out? Season 2 of Fargo pulled a True Detective by finding a whole new cast (and even time era!) and many have felt it was weaker for the change. Will that damage its chances of going all the way?
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine flew the flag for comedy in 2014 with a highly respectable #4 finish. The show is starting to show its age but is still beloved. Will it be able to become the first ever sitcom to top our poll?
  • Another comedy to find success in 2014 was Rick and Morty. Its sophomore season putting in another strong set of episodes. Can the legion of Dan Harmon fans take the show to new heights?
  • And then there's one of comedy's biggest hitters in years past. Parks and Recreation came to an end in 2015 with a series of emotional episodes that encapsulated its feel-good atmosphere. How will the show fare in its final year in our poll?
  • The first season of The Leftovers was seen as a failure by many. Messy, desolate and depressing, it ended up finishing in the middle of the pack at #48. However, season 2 has been acclaimed as a strong turnaround, could we see it take a massive climb?
  • One of the big stories in 2014 was the success of DC's television department. Both Arrow and The Flash impressed with big, bold storytelling that saw each of them make the top 10. Will they be able to repeat their success this time around?
  • And then there's the competition. Marvel's Agents of SHIELD was the biggest shock of all, taking the Highest Climber award by rising a massive 62 places to break into the top 10. Despite heavy criticism that fanbase remains loyal, can they keep the show steady or maybe even push it on to new heights?
  • But that's not all that came our way from Marvel in 2015. Their new relationship with Netflix gave us Daredevil and Jessica Jones. How high can they hit in their first appearance?
  • Another of Netflix's new shows was perhaps the most divisive show of the year. While many hailed Sense8 for its strong character work and beautiful cinematography just as many others derided it for its slow pacing and LGBT sermonising. With so many strong opinions out there, what will its final placing be?
  • And then there's the one that nobody saw coming. For years, USA has been known for light and breezy procedurals but in 2015 Mr. Robot came out of nowhere with what might be the most innovative storytelling of the year. Can it make a push for the #1 position in its debut year?
  • But perhaps the show best set to get the top spot on its first appearance is Better Call Saul. With the weight of Vince Gilligan and the pedigree of its predecessor well established, can it emulate Breaking Bad by going all the way?

These are questions that will all be answered in time but first let's get the preamble out of the way. Here's how things look below the top 50.

Hey, Rarity, I hate to break this to you, but the final episode of ABC's The Neighbors aired in 2014. Whoever listed the show was most likely talking about Tommy Wiseau's The Neighbors, which is on Hulu.

Also, those people should probably get MRIs, just to be safe.

EDIT: And if you want to be REALLY exact with network listings, Shirobako aired in Japan on Tokyo MX; Crunchyroll simulcast it for North American (worldwide?) audiences. Probably nothing you needed to know since it only got the one vote, but just a harmless FYI.

BTW Rarity, tiny correction but since I was the only one to vote for 19-2 this year, it's actually the English-Canadian one that aired on Bravo Canada that year, not Télévision de Radio Canada.

Earlier I said I was using this thread as a reference to find more shows like Bojack Horseman, but I was trying to do it by eye. Then it occurred to me: I actually made a program a while back that will do that kind of thing for me.

Specifically, I have a program that can reference lists of media (like the top ten lists in this thread) and cross-reference them in a way to figure out which of those media are associated with each other most frequently, then defines different categories of media based on those connections. It was originally designed for a much larger base of reference material, and on top of that, I already knew there were some oversights in the algorithm that lead to weird quirks in the output from time to time, but I figured it would be a fun thing to do for this thread all the same.

...I don't want to want to interrupt the countdown while it's still going on, though, so I'll wait until it's finished, then show the results. Just figured I'd give the thread something else to anticipate in the meantime.

EDIT: Just as a sample, though, Bojack Horseman did indeed end up in the same category as Rick and Morty, but not You're the Worst.

SUCK A DICK, DUMBSHITS!

Surprised Vikings lost ground this year considering how much better this season was than what came before. Maybe people gave up on it, which would be understandable I guess. If I had such skills I would put a gif here of the giant spiked wheel mowing down a shitload of vikings on a bridge.

A lot of stuff is going to drop this year for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the show. Arrow got shoved off my (and apparently a bunch of other peoples') list even though the new season has been across the board better so far. I can't justify Top 10ing it anymore with the amount of good poo poo on TV nowadays.

SUCK A DICK, DUMBSHITS!

I didn't list Arrow either, but I thought this year wasn't nearly as good, but I get what you're saying. Peak TV is real!

I'm only half joking, I'm woefully behind on Homeland and Manhattan because I just haven't had the time. I just watched an early episode of this season of Manhattan that was fantastic too. It very well may have ranked if I'd had time to see the season if it stays this good.

Transparent was hurt by coming out so late in the year. As I alluded to in my list, it probably would have made my Top 10 if I had time to watch it.

I never got into Mad Men. I watched maybe the first 3 episodes, and I felt like I was supposed to get excited purely over the period setting, because nothing interesting happened.

And my roommate at the time told me there was never an over-arching story. Maybe he was wrong, but those two impressions killed any interest I had in it.
