At the time, there was an arms race of epic proportions.
I owned a Warhound, a Shadowsword, and a Baneblade.
One buddy owned a pair of Warhounds and a Reaver.
Another owned THREE of the Phantom Titans.
Good times :)

I love the description. GW is much too earnest for something that flippant these days.

Titans can be utterly devastating in-game. Whether or not they are worth the cost is up to the user (as is pretty much anything else in this silly game). My reaver can push out eight strength D shots a turn; this can be horrendously powerful... but honestly, massed lascannon shots can be the equal or better of most superheavy weapons. The difference for titans is that they tend to be extremely durable, largely immune to most psychic attacks and have weapons that cannot be disabled.

If memory serves correct it was $80 back in '95.

It's like, you know how the US orders drone strikes on Iran nuclear scientists because the US doesn't want Iran to have nukes because the US wants to push them around and we don't gently caress with countries that have nukes no matter how bad they are? It's kind of like that.

That's actually pretty reasonable for space barbies

That works out to ~$125 in 2015 money, so it's like a third of the price of a Warhound Titan from FW today.

True, but many would argue that the goofier 90s 40k aesthetic was better than the super-serious one these days.

Anyway, conversions and customisations are encouraged in this hobby. Much better to use that titan as a base for conversions than a super expensive FW one.

If you're gonna convert it anyway to try to make it look like something with a modern aesthetic, start with a cheap toy robot or something instead of a years out of production resin model that people would be willing to pay upwards of $400 for.

A TYE-wing or DIE-wing is a TIE ball with Y-wing engine nacelles (there's one of those in the pic, for the record).

e: and I love the Y-wing fuselage with two(!) B-wing engine/weapon sections attached. I can only assume that one came about because a pirate pilot kept going through different Ugly designs and always came back to the engineers saying "Still not enough torpedoes."

I got sad when I learned that xwing players actually do buy ships they don't want to get one or two of the cards they come with.

In that situation you might as well make some interesting conversions I guess!
