Do you love Homeworld? Well you're in luck, several of the original developers of that game have formed the studio Blackbird Interactive (BBI) in order to create the next great RTS experience. Set on a hostile planet, the player's goal is to locate and excavate the remains of buried spacecraft for valuable lost technology, while fighting off factions that presumably want to do the same or otherwise prevent them from succeeding. Initially the game that BBI was developing was only supposed to be a "spiritual successor" to Homeworld, but after assisting Gearbox with Homeworld: Remastered they have been granted access to the IP. It has since been renamed as Homeworld: Shipbreakers. Here's what we know so far:
-Made by the original creators of Homeworld. -The first new Homeworld game in 10 years. -An engaging RTS experience. -A prequel to the events of the original Homeworld game. The team has been busily working away on the game. Check out some of the procedural cinematography tools they have developed for themselves in this video below. Note that this also includes the latest in-engine teaser trailer! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNR9Nvjsv9Y Great looking stuff. What do you think? Personally, I can't wait to dig into it (pun intended). EDIT: Okay, good news and bad news. Bad news: the name had changed to something a little less elegant, "Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak" Good news: It will be out on January 20th! More videos below! Does this have anything except Star Citizen-style slick videos of stuff that doesn't exist yet?

Since this isn't a crowd-funded game it is in no way comparable to Star Citizen. They don't need anyone to purchase fancy in-game vehicles or anything. It's just a game that is currently being developed. After the recent update with the conference talk and teaser video, I thought it would be a good time to start a thread on it.

I think it's pretty cool that these 2 companies helped each other. Blackbird ended up needing a lot more money than they had and Gearbox gave them millions along with lending them the IP. Blackbird helped Gearbox recover the lost Homeworld code to create the remastered edition. If gearbox didn't win the IP who knows what would have happened. Blackbird could have ended up with lovely publishers without the IP.

I'm kinda sad that they only offer 20% discount to owners of remastered Homeworld.

I'm very unwilling to purchase this because of Gear box's history and the almost complete media silence. That's too close to Aliens to be comfortable. Gonna wait until it's been out a while. It's kind of ridiculous I'm not even sure what kind of game it is anymore.

BBI are the primary developers, just working with Gearbox on publishing since they lent them the IP. It will no doubt play like a terrain based Homeworld, but I agree that a real game play video would make it a much easier sell.

Huh, I hope they release some game play footage soon. It's only a couple weeks out. For comparison, XCOM 2 had a full level play through and that won't be out until February.

Im gonna take this with a huge grain of salt, the total lack of any kind of info coming from bbi or gearbox is not a good sign. Lots of cool art on bbi's facebook though.

Also it should be mentioned that there has been a homeworld / gearbox / shipbreakers bitch and moan thread for the last year: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3545593 Give it a glance if you are interested in the game.

I know I was the one that started this, but I am becoming less confident that it will turn out well. Either the game is not ready or Gearbox is totally screwing up on the PR front. Only 12 days away and still no major PR/hype push or significant game play footage. I think this one may wait until the next Steam sale for me.

Maybe Gearbox accidently used the marketing budget for Borderlands 3 development instead.

Well, here's a new trailer... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7ior9JoUE0 Yet still no true game play videos. The most I can gather from one quick shot in that video is that you can left-click in this game to select units, so at least we have that bullet point.

Doesn't account for the clipping but they mention at one point they're just playing on the dev's laptop, which probably goes a bit towards the choppiness and fidelity.

Yeah I just saw that bit, still a little skeptical but we'll see I guess when it comes out. It's on the top 10 steam list at the moment so hopefully if it's good it does well, maybe we will see some mods for it and an expansion.

Have they confirmed if the shooting is simulated or just dice rolling to-hits?

This is looking really good, that's some mighty fine sand they've got going there. And in relation to the title, I wish it was a Dune game, or that we had one on the horizon anyway. Ah well, more Homeworld is good too I suppose.

http://www.polygon.com/2016/1/15/10776486/homeworld-deserts-of-kharak-gameplay-preview There is a lot going on here that we haven't seen before, including the first example of captured stuff, planes getting shot down being gorgeous, and gunships. I'll accept units sort of clipping like that if it means that these vehicles don't path like early Company of Heroes.

Seems someone gets an Ion Cannon too, at the end of the latest trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbXYmmsARe8 I decided to pre-order this, I never did pick up Homeworld Remastered over the past few steam sales so I guess this makes the pricepoint of DoK a bit better in terms of value. Still, I hope someone makes a Dune mod for this game, it'd fit in really well. (I do hope shadow quality in final release is better than this image though)

I like how the religious fanatic baddies are totally right in their stance, but for the wrong reasons. It's really neat how they've incorporated the Taiidan empire logo into the religious icon signifying their god.
