so I am watching jane the virgin on hulu, catching up on season 2 before it comes back from the break (so excited), and hulu keeps playing this ad for an asthma inhaler that covers the entire screen, including the volume control bits, so I have this direct-to-consumer medical ad playing at full volume for 60 seconds and I can't even tab away from it, I have to mute my entire browser. and I don't even have asthma! anyway it's supes annoying thank you for your time ad-hate thread.

It's great how the family in the commercial has what looks like a 22 inch TV above the mantle. Because that's a good size for a TV put up on a wall. Sure.

But the car they actually show is on with all the upgrades and actually costs 36,550. Have these people not been inside a car built in the last 5 years because it looks like most of that options price is like, the sunroof and leather and poo poo. If you're driving a 2007 whatever of course you're going to be blown away by touchscreens and hooking up your iphone and that kind of stuff.

At work week or so ago, I spent a good 20 minutes explaining OTA TV to someone in his late 50's because he was convinced that there was something fishy about the "satellite" he saw at Wal-Mart advertising free TV. He finally got it when he was like "oh, it's like the old rabbit ears!" The thing that always gets me about OTA antennas is they're all advertised as being able to be installed in a hidden fashion, typically right behind the TV itself. This is the worst loving spot for an antenna, I'm sure modern flat screens are a little less harsh since there's not a giant electrified tube taking up most of the box, but you want those things as high and far away from the TV as possible. I bet I could make some good money installing OTA antennas for people.

I believe Al does have to pay to use the same tune (and he also tries to get the artist's OK but that's his own initiative), so theoretically Hormel's ad guys could have done the same thing. Getting the rights to do a cover or use the same tune is way cheaper than actually licensing a specific recording of a song.

Actually, I wonder Weird Al could do something about this since you could make the argument that they're not really parodying the original song but just using his parody with the numbers filed off.

The argument could be made, but it wouldn't have a leg to stand on. It's Al's (parody) song in the same style with new lyrics. Most of Al's modern parody songs are songs in the same style with new lyrics. The ad's still terrible though.

I imagine it works on a wish fulfillment angle. It targets that demo insofar as how they'd like to see themselves, not the reality of the situation.
