The Ice Nation are the baddies this year.

PriorMarcus posted:Yeah, Octavia spent the first 16 years of her life knowing only two people and o e of them was executed. Then she spent a year or two in the Skybox barely interacting with anyone until she was dropped to the ground to die. Now the people who killed her mother and whose rules forced her to live under the floor and go to jail are in charge. Not only that, but Bellamy basically did everything wrong for the right reason (in his head) to protect Octavia in season 1 and kept driving a wedge with the only person she's ever implicitly trusted. Then the arkers capture and torture the first person who connects with her on more than a superficial level. Everything in season 1 pretty much serves to alienate Octavia from the 100 apart from maybe Jasper and Monty, and even that gets cut off in season 2. And it's not like she magically became Xena Warrior Princess overnight, it was a pretty arduous journey to gain the respect of Indra when she was desperately trying to find and save Lincoln, and it's pretty understandable that she'd be upset with Lincoln for basically following the opposite development she'd been experiencing in herself while fighting so hard for him. If anything Octavia has had the most organic growth to the character she currently is aside from Kane. hope and vaseline fucked around with this message at 14:39 on Feb 7, 2016 |

Boris Galerkin posted:I'm trying to wrap my head around the politics of this show and the more I think about it the more it doesn't make sense. Taking someone hostage from an ally is something that's been done throughout history. Its not that unusual. Keep in mind that Lexa's coalition is a recent and fragile one, which could splinter at any moment. What better ways to ensure the leaders of each clan stay in line? "Step out of line and your son gets it", is a pretty drat reason not to step out of line.

Is Lexa bad at fighting or do we just rarely ever get to see her fight? I seem to remember her kicking Jaha's rear end. Admittedly, that doesn't seem that hard. She got smacked by that wunderkid but I thought the point of that scene was the kid being good and not Lexa being bad. E: Also the politics I got from the show is that the Ice Nation is a part of the coalition, but is the most powerful individual member, so they throw their weight around more.

I don't see what's the big deal with Octavia not wanting Lincoln to be too cozy with the arkers. Octavia was never part of the Arkers and probably doesn't hold a lot of love for any of them. Her life mainly consisted of hiding in the floorboards, or spending time in jail. The arkers floated her parents and sent her down on earth to die with the rest of the 100. Why would she hold any loyalty to them? She got to earth and found herself a badass. She likes him for his culture and what he is and now, shje feels like he's trying to become one of the very people who imprisoned her all her life. After the first 3 episodes on the ground, Octavia was already more of a grounder than an Arker.

Octavia should run off with Roan, I bet they'd get along together.
|
# ? Feb 7, 2016 16:49 |
My understanding of Roan is that he's not really a fan of his own mom/Ice Nation, and has hanging out with Tree Crew before he was banished by Lexa. He brings her Clarke to get unbanished and she said "nah, you're my prisoner too" and now he wants Clarke to kill her. He could have brought Clarke to the Ice queen but didn't. He is obviously estranged from his own nation. I'm sure they'll fill in more details about him as time goes on.

Is that tower a recognizable building or is it just random? I did like the birds eye view they did of it where you could see that it actually lies within a ruined city. Also Polis is a specific place or are grounders bringing back Greek?

I didn't say Octavia wanting to be a Grounder (or more specifically, not an Arker) didn't make sense, it's the time frame that makes it funny. She actually did become a badass basically overnight. All her dialogue this season so far is as if she grew up with them when the show's time frame means she could only have been with them for like 2 weeks.

It's a coalition between the 12 clans, but they're all under Lexa. Even though she's from the Tree Clan and Polis is physically located there, I don't think she's considered their day to day leader. That appears to be Indra.

They already explicitly referred to Indra as the leader of the Tree Clan, so yeah, that's right.

Yes. quote:So if Ice Nation is a part of the coalition, why is their leader's son a prisoner? Because the Ice Nation is poo poo and has been trying to gently caress with Lexa for...ever. That sounds right. Which is also why Octavia isn't with Indra anymore, because she was forced to choose and she went after her brother rather than retreat with Treecrew.

From what I understand, the basic idea behind Trigdasleng is that it's designed to be a made up language, sort of like Pig Latin. It's a pidgin English for a survivalist group that's big enough that not everybody knows each other. So if somebody can talk to you in the same made-up language, then you're both part of the same group, and if somebody doesn't understand, then they're an outsider. Which is why a lot of English creeps into the language, and why things like skykru and and treekru makes sense. It's not hard to imagine slipping in polis in as a word for city, since it's the root word for words like politician, polite, and policy. I have studied zero ancient Greek and I know that polis means city. thrakkorzog fucked around with this message at 10:23 on Feb 9, 2016 |
