Yeah I don't think the Cubs are going to make 97 wins again, let alone crack 100 like these projections are stating. On the other hand, I feel like the NL Central is going to be less dominant in general this season, so devil magic aside I think the Cubs still have a solid shot at taking the division, even if they end up down overall in wins.Monicro posted:e: also going back to how people thought they were going to do last year I think "shoot for above-.500, maaayybe sneak into a wildcard" was the pretty universal sentiment

The Cubs are more likely than not to win 90 games and that's probably enough in the 2016 NLC. I'm largely indifferent to predictions of 95+. A lot has to go right, and it's not fantastical or anything, but that's a REALLY hard thing to do and it likely doesn't matter given that they'd win the division either way.

bewbies posted:So I don't really understand UZR, but it would seem like you could just break down the field into little squares or hexes (say 1 sqft) and then just determine relative range by how many squares a player regularly covers? I'm sure someone has thought of this but I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. If MLB keeps freely sharing statcast information, I assume eventually we will get better public information about defense and they'll be able to better assess player skill based on range covered and route efficiency rather than a did they or didn't they catch a ball on this spot metric.

im very excited to see Yu Darvish return and be disgustingly filthy and reclaim the crown of "mindblowingly sick but will only place 3rd in cy young voting forever" from chris sale also psyched to see a starting rotation of Harv/DeGrom/Thor/Matz/Big Bart. jesus christ and they still have Wheeler. I read an article that said the only team with a better rotation was the Cardinals and I can't process that at all.

Waino/Martinez/Wacha is awesome, but Leake is literally the most average starting pitcher you could possibly imagine, and lmao if you think Jaime Garcia is going to throw more than like 50 innings this year. The Cardinals have a very good rotation. The Mets have a better one.

I'm much higher on Hot-me than most and even I think our rotation alone isn't the best front to back, but considering we have our 3 best relievers all coming back I don't think it's an outrageous ranking. Edit: Holy poo poo, Ozzie actually has the most career defensive WAR of all players, apparently. I was just being a massive homer and making stuff up. Since you said "coming back" I can only imagine you mean Walden (who is awesome when healthy, but he's not healthy) or Maness (who's got an amazing knack for generating ground balls, but isn't really particularly good). Or Broxton, I guess, but Broxton is basically "acceptable bullpen filler" The Final Boss is probably the Cardinals' 3rd best reliever.

I think he got ground down from overuse near the end but is reliable out of the 'pen and works as a solid bridge if we leave a starter in too long mid-inning. I'm anxious to see The Final Boss do his thing but even without him I think the Cardinals have one of the best bullpens on paper.

in general, i'm just really excited to see Adams, Piscotty, Grichuk, Peralta, Holliday, Yadi, Wong and Carpenter all on the field at the same time at some point this season, hopefully, so we can actually take advantage of that 'depth' that we have.
