Trade everyone, we don't care anymore, whatever. It feels to me like just about every Canadian franchise except the Leafs could use a major shakeup right now. The Leafs are terrible, but it feels like they have been fairly calculated over the last 10-12 months or so. Calgary regressed, Ottawa needs a new owner, Vancouver needs to send their entire front office to a gulag, Montreal's hamstrung by lovely front office, a bad coach, and a media that cannot and will not accept their best player is a flashy black guy from Ontario, and Edmonton is literally so poorly run that as a Flames fan, I cannot really enjoy it.

Wippersnapper posted:Is there any hope for Edmonton not coming in last again next year? I thought they were better/won more with McDavid in the lineup so I'm hoping it's theoretically possible? I'd like to think so. One of the bigger reasons for their struggles this year (besides just being the Oilers) was losing several of their better players to injuries. McDavid, Eberle, Nuge, Pouliot, Yakupov, Klefbom and Davidson were all injured for over a month at various points throughout the season, and the Oilers just don't have the depth to survive several of those guys going down. Klefbom was the most devastating loss since he's the Oilers best D, and their record with/without Klefbom reflects that (13-15-2 with Klefbom, 17-28-5 without). If McDavid and Klefbom stay healthy for all 82 games next season, I think they avoid finishing in the bottom 5. As well, the Oilers roster should hopefully be improved during the off-season through trading several of the big names up front (Hall, Nuge, Eberle, whoever the 1st round pick ends up being) for help on D and probably other forwards as well. There's no way Chiarelli can leave the roster as it is. A Typical Goon posted:If they get Matthews they'll probably move 2 or 3 of RNH, Hall, Eberle and Yakupov. If they play their cards right in those trades and McDavid, Draisatl and Matthews develop well I think they could be vastly improved next year That's assuming they don't just trade Matthews if they win the draft lottery.

Leaked documents (like 2 tb worth) from a Panamanian firm that sets up offshore shell companies (and obfuscates ownership) seemingly to hide money / avoid taxes. The problem with the idea that Edmonton will solve all their problems via trade is that this is still the same front office that traded two really good picks for Griffin Reinhart (who pretty much sucks) because of nepotism last season. Chiarelli's also the same GM who traded Tyler Seguin for a broken down Loui Eriksson and a pile of beans. I don't know how it could seem like a good thing that this is the guy who's gonna be trading Taylor Hall or RNH. It doesn't matter what EDM trades if they don't have the player evaluation to get value out of deals.

Eriksson's PPG started going down the year before he was traded, and he was almost 30 when the deal happened. He's still an effective player but he's a poster child for a guy exiting his prime being traded for someone entering theirs, and all the backwards thinking involved in a move like that.

You get value when other teams want your players really badly, or there's a lot of teams looking and not many selling. This offseason there is going to be plenty of talent on the market, because of the salary cap issues from the weak economy.
