so according to some poo poo people have been saying on the radio mike sullivan isn't planning on breaking up crosby or kessel's line when malkin returns. i hope the penguins can make it far enough into the playoffs to make that happen because it would be pretty amazing to watch them rolling their lines and have one of crosby, kessel, or malkin on the ice for around 50 minutes a game, maybe even more if they decide this means crosby can play on the penalty kill

i can get behind this

1) kunitz - crosby - hornqvist
2a) hagelin - bonino - kessel
2b) fehr/sheary - malkin - bennett
3) fehr/sheary - cullen - kuhnhackl

that does not seem like an easy lineup to match against. god i hope we make it to the point where malkin returns

no that was Carlyle

AV is just stubbornly loyal to his vets that he has leaned on in the past. Girardi and Staal have reps as good defensive defensemen from years past (when they actually were pretty good for a time) and he lets that cloud his ability to judge their current level of play IMO.

Also his defensive system probably needs some tweaking at this point. I noticed again while watching highlights from last nights game how he wants his defensemen to play in front of their net and while I can understand a general idea I think this season has proven that it's resulting in a ton of goals against. The Rangers D will often be moving around a lot more than others teams D and they'll play in front of opposing players near the crease instead of behind like you often see other teams do. In theory this can help you get a quick breakout if you block a shot, screw up shooting lanes and force turnovers, etc, but lately it's really resulted in a lot of goals against from guys who are all alone in front because their teammate was able to get them the puck through the Rangers players trying to get between them. Oh and beyond that, he doesn't really have the players to run that system very well anymore as Girardi and Staal continue to decline.

I can't poo poo on AV too much, he actually still is a good coach, but he's been way too loyal to his crappy blueliners this season and hasn't adjusted things to deal with their declining abilities.

Habs could also ice a 15th D-man to end this season. Could beat the record of icing 14 defencemen back in the 00-01 season which was also coached by Therrien (!).

Fire Therrien (again).

Also, this offseason for the Rangers could be pretty fascinating as I think it's the first with Gorton having full control and I think there's could be some significant shuffling of the team for cap purposes and competitive purposes. Assuming they don't win the cup (which is probably a safe assumption), AV and the Rangers brass have basically said this is one last "kick at the can" for the current core group of players. I can see them moving Nash, for one, which frees up a lot of salary. I'd love for them to re-sign Yandle to a friendly deal but it probably won't happen, BUT if they could move either Staal or Girardi somehow and really mix things up on the back then I'd have some more hope for coming years. I can also see them trading some players rights like Kreider because of the cap, but it's possible if they move Nash they could keep him. I don't think they want to let Miller go and he's a RFA anyways. I also don't think they want to get rid of core guys like Stepan or Brassard but it's always possible that something big could come along to really shake things up.

Or maybe I'm overthinking it...I just wouldn't be surprised to see some pretty big moves come up this season as they work with the cap and try to retool the team. Buchnevich should be over next year too and I have my fingers crossed he'll jump in as a 20 goal scorer

I want them to keep Zucc, Brass, Stepan, Kreider, Miller, McD, and Hank's not going anywhere. Otherwise, do what you can to improve the team Jeff.

I'm honestly not a fan of the contract Yandle is in line for at his age.

Yeah I agree about Yandle though I do think he'll age much better than Girardi or Staal. I can see him being a bit like Brian Campbell, but 6 years at $7 mill or whatever he's going to get and he's nearly 30 isn't the most awesome.

I'd probably advocate to keep Hayes as well...he's had a sophmore slump but a decent amount could be contributed to needing to learn what it takes to be a pro player year after year. He can still get juicy assignments as the 3C behind Brassard and Stepan and produce. I wouldn't be totally adverse to trading Kreider but he's also one of those guys you worry that as soon as you trade him he's going to score 30 goals. I mean, he scored 20 goals this year while looking like he had no idea what he was doing for 3/4's of the season. If he suddenly gets himself sorted out he's an easy lock for 30 goals per year.

LmaoTheKid posted:

I'm guessing best case scenario is that he comes back in the 2nd round if they make it that far. Rangers have had some crap luck with injuries and playoffs these past two years. Oh well, even with him the D was not in good shape, he can't drag the corpse of Girardi, Staal, and the brain dead antics of Klein around the ice all the time.

As much as I'd like to be all "hell yeah", Boyle is probably just out to rest him up for the playoffs rather than for poor performance (though honestly I haven't been paying attention to his performance as much lately, he has at least been scoring a bit)

Early in the season there were continual rumours that Duchene was going to be traded. He immediately went on a pretty big tear to stop that talk but those sentiments aren't new. Although it was always stupid.
