1. Backbeat

One of the most popular sub forums of Something Awful's discussions board is the Games subforum. Older style discussion boards are a thing of the past thanks to other methods of instant online communication but due to its parent website popularity many years ago, there is still a massively thriving community of users, affectionately called Goons, on the Something Awful Forums.

I am a user of the Something Awful forums and have been for nearly fourteen years. I joined the site during my very first move across the Atlantic in 2001 when I settled in Omaha, Nebraska. I had travelled from my homeland in order to seek fame and glory instead of immersing myself in the student debt of University.

While lonely in the middle of a country I did not know, I kept in contact with people via phone calls and forums. The time difference made things a bit tough and back in the early Noughties the Internet and World was a very different place. I found The Something Awful forums thanks to some long gone (but not forgotten) sub forums and did what anyone did in those early days: I lurked.

For a long while I lurked and for a long while I was content to just read all the varied and interesting posts that would spring up daily. Back then I was to nervous to properly join in with discussions because the site itself was a whole different place.

To be a member of the Something Awful forums, you pay a fee of $10 and I enjoyed reading it so much that I didn't want to mess up and lose the knowledge that I could post any time.

If we skip a number of years and a growing number of more confident posts we come to now. I have been a member for over a decade. I post with much more regularity and the biggest difference of all is that I help to moderate the Games Forum. I am essentially responsible for helping to make the Games Forum a welcoming and good place to post. I can probate (prevent the posting of) and ban (prevent general usage of most of the forums) of users who break the rules set up in each individual sub forum.

The general atmosphere of the Forum has changed considerably since inception and as a moderator I wanted to ensure that the more relaxed and enjoyable posting that seems to permeate the Games Forum stays that way. As such, when I have to do the moderating I wanted to ensure that I was fair and just and understood all backstory regarding each users needs when reports would come in.

Sometimes this would involve spending half an hour or so going through posting history, previous pages of the thread, or users rap sheets to see if this was a common occurrence. Sometimes I wanted more information than that, and for this I would step into the threads that had an issue and request people to be nicer or try to gather more information from the users.

This brings me to the MMO-HMO.

Reading this, I'm surprised and delighted by how much effort you put into the moderation of subforums. Most mods and IK tend to simply probate for no reasons, or sometimes simply because they are being disagreed with.

I hope you'll continue writing this (at whatever pace you set yourself) and eventually get to talk about what drew you to EVE and how/if playing the game changed your view regarding the craziness of this thread.

Yeah, I have approximately 60 days of game time. I meant I redeemed one of the plexes thinking it would take my account out of trial, which I didn't realize it already was. And I sold the other plex to purchase an SP injector to get a procurer.

Just go through the more popular threads and take a look at the immensely detailed OPs... the only thing that these forums are missing is a way to favorite posts since some posts also have a wealth of information but there's no real way to refer back to them. Reddit's 'save this post' feature would be nice for here as well.
