Ginger beer kicks balls in something like a Dark and Stormy or a Moscow Mule. Hope you realize that Ginger Beer doesn't have any alcohol in it. Kirkland bourbon is surprisingly drinkable. Good enough on the rocks. I'd put it above that Bulleit poo poo. Bulleit rye is okay. The bourbon is poo poo though.

What is the best cheap scotch Is there even a good cheap one or do they all suck

Good scotch starts at around $40 for anything single malt, anything cheaper that isn't blended is probably underwhelming. As for workable blended scotches Ballentines and White Horse are good bets on a budget.

I used to like George Dickel a lot but they've steadily gotten more expensive over the years. But it's still good for jokes. I'll give you a nickel for a taste of your Dickel. Suck down a Dickel. Dickels for days. FogHelmut posted:Bulleit rye is okay. The bourbon is poo poo though. Bulleit is the worst. They want you to believe they're the cheapest of the good stuff, but really they're just the most expensive of the cheap stuff. Their rye is ok, another fine Midwest Grain Product, but it's easy to find other MGP ryes that are the same thing for less money. Look on the backs of the bottles for distilled in Indiana. Rittenhouse rye is what you want for this thread. It's the evan williams of rye.

FrankieGoes posted:What do you do with bourbon? What is bourbon? Is it whisky but like single malt or aged in a toilet or its whisky but from Kentucky? How do you drink it? rocks? neat? Can i drink it with ice and diet pepsi? As mentioned earlier, bourbon is 52% corn mash minimum aged in a NEW oak barrel for two years with no geographic constraint on production. Single malt is whiskey made of one type of malted grain, generally barley at a single distillery. In the case of single malts, blending between barrels is legally allowed and the age statement indicates the youngest spirit. I believe there are some rules concerning the aging of blended whiskeys as well, but I'm not sure what they are. As for "what" to do with bourbon, that's a matter of taste. Anything marked single barrel or small batch it's generally best to just sip it on the rocks, but that's not entirely important. I do not classify these products in the "cheap whiskey" realm as generally they're going to be $30+. Examples: Eagle Rare, Weller 12, and Evan Williams Single Barrel 10 Year, Basil Haydens, and so on. Something to also consider is the fact that age statements are being dropped by manufacturers due to shortages. Jim Beam 8 Year is now VX, a blending of 6/7 year barrels. Keep a close eye on the labeling for this when picking middle to higher end bourbons. There are few good cheap single malts, mainly just McLellands but don't expect it to blow your mind. Try Glenlivet for quality but again this is far from the core topic of "best cheap whiskey".

I think I'm one of very few defenders of McClelland's Islay as a very simple but serviceable bottle. Going to have to try their other stuff but will likely be disappointed. In the meantime:

Speyburn is the only cheap single-malt I'd go for -- it's not particularly interesting but totally drinkable. The 10 year is good value, 28 bucks where I am.

Klyith posted:Or better yet, don't get into high end bourbon right now. They're all overpriced because the old barrels were made up before the bourbon boom so they made far less quantity, not expecting it to suddenly get popular. Wait 4 years for the current higher production to catch up -- or wait until the next flavor of booze is all hyped and demand crashes. see i'd take the mcclellands islay over speyburn because at least then youre getting some improperly aged bowmore instead of properly aged speyburn

Cheap scotch kinda seems like it'd be a bad bet, but I assume that it's overpriced as a rich and sophisticated drink or something Will Ferrel drank in Newsanchor movie. So the really cheap stuff would be really garbagey. I stupidly bought a $10 Trader Joe's scotch once and had a hangover like it was raining hammers in hell.

Wild Turkey 101 is the best fightin' whiskey. Nothing gets you in the mood to attack quite like half a bottle of WT101 and a bonfire. And the way it makes your throbbing bloody nose feel afterwards is sublime. Other fightin' whiskeys just can't compare.
