So that means DC will be hitting my sweet spot in 2023. That's a long wait.

I didn't have an account on Amazon until 2009 or so (because I didn't have a card before then - the first thing I bought were the first three Muppets movies on DVD), but I remember I once saw my mum's buying history and the first thing was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for PS1 in 2001 (Christmas present for my cousin, I think). It's strange to look back at the stuff I've blown all my money on. Wheat Loaf fucked around with this message at 08:54 on Jun 29, 2016 |

I had an Amazon account in the early-2000s, but in 2010 it got hacked, so I had to have them close it and start a new one. This actually really sucks because I had bought a bunch of CDs from them that would have been in my Prime Music account, but aren't. Anyway, my first order in 2010 was for 3D Dot Game Heroes and Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty Collector's Edition.

I read Ex Machina over the past few days. I love Brian K Vaugn's work but holy poo poo the ending to that series was just so bad. Generally I don't let bad endings ruin books for me, but I think the the second half of book 5 completely ruined Ex Machina and ensured I'll never re-read it.

That's also my only order from 2002. Then from 2003-2008 it's mostly one or two orders a year, then I jump to 8 in 2009 and 42 in 2010, so I can guess when I got Prime.

After finally getting all four volumes of the Deluxe edition of The Invisibles, i'm giving it another shot after reading the first few trades during college. God...drat this thing is dense. It's like every major theme Grant Morrison ever had in his works is allowed to run wild here, and I'm not even done with the first volume, only up to 23: Things Fall Apart. If you ever do try to attempt this, go into it like a Thomas Pychon novel, don't try to think about how all these different scenes tie together, just focus on what's happening now.

I was thinking, Marvel has a couple of recurring characters who were intentionally designed to evoke DC characters (eg: Squadron Supreme, Sentry). Does DC have any recurring characters intentionally designed to evoke Marvel characters?

The Invisibles is how you freebase Morrison. I look forward to your thoughts on the ending. e^^^ no because Marvel doesn't have a huge inferiority complex about their competition. DC did make Marvel analogues around the same time as Squadron Supreme but they've never used them again, let alone given them their own on-going.

Does DC have any recurring characters intentionally designed to evoke Marvel characters? Very few DC characters with serious staying power don't have their roots in the golden age of comics. So, not really. I think a couple versions of Superboy kinda felt like a riff on on young Spider-Man.

The Champions of Angor and their villains are the Avengers and a bunch of Marvel villains. It's never even been subtle.

It's never even been subtle. There's too many to keep track of and it's not limited to Marvel and DC riffing on each other. DC doesn't really keep their's around for long but some of Marvel's KO's have real staying power like the Squadron Supreme and it's multiple incarnations and the Imperial Guard (whom are all KO's of the Legion).

Everyone does tons of homages, ripoffs, and riffs. In any superhero work that runs long enough, you will eventually meet the Fantastic Four, Hulk, and at least five members of the Justice League. It's a cosmic law. You usually get Captain America as well, not infrequently combined with Superman in the Justice League.

DC has a huge love/hate inferiority complex with Marvel where they try desperately to ape and also intentionally divorce themselves from what the House of Ideas is doing. So you get stuff like New Teen Titans which was DC successfully copying X-Men pretty much to a tee down to reviving a long-dormant modestly successful Silver Age book with a largely new roster. I would say that the one nut they've never been able to crack, which they periodically continually try to replicate is Spider-Man. I largely think it's basically impossible for DC to do so, but DC has tried on and off for decades at this point to have their own S-M, even though the overarching genetics of the company makes it basically impossible. On the other side, Marvel's been pretty satisfied keeping to their own direction except for Batman which they very very very clearly wish they could somehow replicate on their side. Unlike DC trying to have their own Spider-Man, I think it's possible for Marvel to do so (as in their creative genetics allow for the possibility) but I doubt we will ever see Marvel pull it off.

Marvel's tried to make Moon Knight into a viable Batman like 11 times now.

And for the most part I'd rather read a book starring Marc Spector than Bruce Wayne and have for almost a decade now. That doesn't mean it will ever actually take off though. I'll just enjoy my 6-12 issues at a time and wait patiently for the next batch. Marvel also has tried to copy its own success with Spider-Man over and over again. Speedball, Nova, Darkhawk, etc. The list goes on and on. X-O fucked around with this message at 07:17 on Jun 30, 2016 |

Apparently Harley Quinn just introduced a knockoff of Deadpool, but there's no way in the world I'm reading it. You could argue that Steel is totally ripping off Iron Man. And Aquaman's been stealing Namor's schtick since the 40s. Namor's just lucky he didn't have an embarrassing cartoon back in the day or every writer would write a story about how "No Namor is cool"

Yeah but Namor doesn't do anything embarrassingly lame like talk to fish. He fucks their humanoid queens.
