Yes it's a good plane. Keep in mind it's slow and the cockpit layout and autopilot are weird but I love it to death.

FSE because once you get bored of it you can participate in making tons of nerds bad by making GBS threads up threads in just the right way to bring out the worst behaviors in their player base until the BoD does something that turns the game upside down.

I mean, I don't want to claim too much of the credit for getting the BoD to implement monthly ownership fees but I'm confident I had at least a small part in making it happen.

LOL.

Hopefully he might use the mobile games to bankroll a new Strike Fighters. If he got it on Steam, his sales would fly through the roof. I only found it out thanks to this LP of it, and immediately bought it. Older flight sims really suffered from a lack of visibility. I'd certainly pay full price + expansions again to play Strike Fighters in VR.

I'd kill for a modern flight sim focused on the pre-computerized jet age that had the same rough mix of "Sim vs Arcadey" as Strike Fighters 2. Basically Strike Fighters 3, yeah.

Does anyone use VORs and such anymore, or is everything just 100% GPS these days?

In sims I use VORs a lot because the stock GPS is rear end and pilotage is difficult when even with all the OrbX stuff it's sometimes difficult to make out what town or road you're over.

IRL VORs are just now starting to go away.

quite a pickle you've got there
Just got me a Thrustmaster HOTAS, and spent about 10 hours this weekend playing through the tutorial missions on FSX. I bought it for Elite Dangerous but ended up only doing that for an hour. Loving everything so far!

Lots of good info in this thread. Would you guys recommend playing through the vanilla content in FSX first before dumping money on add-ons?

Do not do FSX uninstall it right now its a money pit that starts off slow at first and ends with you driving to an airport 3 days a week or more to throw all your money at a flight instructor like a junkie addicted to leaded gasoline exhaust fumes.

I mean, you should totally start with Active Sky Next or 2016 and an A2A plane. I like the Cherokee and Comanche.

I'd say start budgeting for some rudder pedals. Pedals are kind of a sleeper of a thing, I had no idea how much they add to the experience until I got them.

I mean, assuming that you've accepted your fate and you know you're going to be dumping money into this hobby.

Dare I ask if anyone has tried Aero fly fs2? It's got VR support which interests me, but I see its still early access with not a whole lot of interactivity with the aircrafts.

I thought the aircraft limit of IL-2 was a few dozen? I'm talking 50+ combat box + escorts + attackers. I've never actually played much IL-2 (criminal, I know) so I guess I'm wrong.

No Muscles For The Majority
As much as I love IL-2 1946, and as wonderful as it's been for so many years, the engine is really showing its age both visually and functionally (for example, last I checked there's still no way to increase the very short draw distance for ground targets), and I don't blame anybody for wanting something newer and shinier. Unfortunately, both new and shiny IL-2 games have been poo poo, with their SP/co-op content outclassed by War Thunder of all things.

You can definitely have more than 50 planes, but the restrictions are more or less based on your computer's performance.

Overall though, I agree with Shine. Il-2 1946 is a fantastic game, and still having mod support (and the occasional patch!) but its like keeping a coma patient on life support for decades. At some point, support for it will die altogether and there still won't be a worthy successor. Which is a drat shame, because all you need to do is take 1946 and give it the facelift it needs.

The main reason I don't play the original Il2 much is because of that lovely draw distance. Antialiasing I can live without but the fog makes me feel like I'm flying in Superman 64.

Too bad it is still the best carrier based airplane game for stick and rudder flying. DCS is alright but the Su33 flight model hasn't been updated since I last checked. Holy poo poo though the Top Gun DLC is gonna rule everything though...
