You also eliminate the problem a lot of guys have in that they tire after 60-70 pitches and lose velocity/command in the middle of a game.

This reminded me of Zack Greinke. How many times have guys turned their careers around (as starters) after being sent to the pen? In 2007 after 14 starts the Royals put him in the bullpen for the rest of the year, in 2009 he won his Cy Young. And has never been 'bad' again until arguably this year.

With him it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was totally mental and he just wasn't trusting he'd last long enough throwing his best stuff all game, still I don't remember that happening with many other guys.

e: I guess I have a potential example staring me in the face as a Royals fan if Danny Duffy can keep his run going. Probably something I just haven't noticed that goes on a lot.

Ryan Dempster was a starter from 1998-2003, the Cubs picked him up in 2004 as a bullpen reclamation project, he became the team's closer for 2005-2007, went back to being a starter (and went 17-6 with a 154 ERA+ in 2008, good for 6th in Cy voting) and was a good enough starter through 2012 that the Rangers sent the Cubs Kyle Hendricks for him at the deadline.

On the flip side, the Braves got the Tigers to take Erick Aybar, which I wouldn't have thought possible.

Aybar has actually been hitting pretty well of late, but he still couldn't field for poo poo and he's an idiot on the bases. Little bit of difference in salary, I guess, maybe a million or so. The minor-league catcher seems like org depth.

Little surprised, thought they would leave him down through the Southern League playoffs and then bring him and Albies up together once that was done. Exciting though, likely means they will have him in Atlanta from Opening Day on next year.

Hendricks was a fringe prospect at best at the time of the trade, he was basically a throw-in on a deal that happened because the Rangers weren't willing to pony up for Greinke(a huge mistake in retrospect)

This Braves management team has had their fuckups but I do like that they tend to fix them sooner rather than later.

Markakis is really all they need to clear off the books now, will be quite a bit of salary flex room after that.
