So like two years ago a girl I was friends with a looooonnnnng time ago got outed as a high end escort by her former best friend. There was much embarrassment and shaming and she deleted her facebook account. I just noticed this evening that she had reactivated it and was actively posting again so I hit her up asking how she was doing and if she was still having trouble from that incident. She tells me that it sucked for a long time but 8 months ago she was retained by a "Saudi Oil Baron" and he's been paying her $10K a month plus expenses.

So I guess it can pay to be a hooker.

Not everyone reads my thread (I wouldn't) so let's look at today's "gently caress the PO" bodge on the CRV.

Geirskogul posted:

On the CRV front, :siren:my fiancee:siren: called me as I was in the shower getting ready for work, saying that her car died completely. She can start it, but "all the electrics shut off" right after starting.
I didn't know what to expect, so I jumped out of the shower, and loaded up the beetle with a car battery, jumper cables, and assorted tools.
Got there, and after testing learned that I could keep the car running by holding the key halfway between "run" and "start," indicating a problem with the ignition switch. I tore down the steering column on the side of the road, and discovered that there was a safety needle stuck into the wires coming off the ignition switch :stare:

I noted which wires it was puncturing, and removed it. The car acted the same. I replaced the needle, and the car ran just fine :psyduck:. After getting home from work that night, I discovered that the first gen CRV had the ignition switches recalled for an internal failure, with the car shutting off randomly (and eventually totally, unless you held the key halfway between the two positions, like I discovered) as the listed symptom.
Here's a picture of some very dirty hands, showing that the needle was pulling some current after I replaced it. It must have been in there for quite a while, allowing air and moisture in, letting the copper wires corrode. My replacing it may have caused it to just barely function again, with a high resistance connection.
:catstare:

A new switch is on the way, and as a temporary measure (it's her only vehicle - she's selling the motorcycle), I soldered a big fat wire right between the two contacts on the back of the switch. It'll get her to work just fine if a safety needle was working for x-years prior.

Ordered new tires for the VW Saturday morning, timing worked out good for Labor Day sales and saved $100. Tires that were on it only had 25k but went to rotate them and the front right was showing chord, front left was close. Tires had a 60k warranty but I'm sure there's a bunch of fine print to that. Rotate every 10k (when I do an oil change) and they looked fine and evenly wearing last time. Probably time for an alignment too I guess. Ordered on the Discount Tire site because no one had 4 in-stock locally, kind of concerned I didn't get a confirmation email or anything.

Then I made the mistake of buying Fallout 4 and Dark Souls 3. Been nice knowing you sleep schedule and productivity. Also a few LEGO games for cooperative play.

Did get the subframe off the F20C, drained the oil and got it hung from the engine hoist. Will try an initial test fit sometime this week. Promise I'm starting the thread soon.

Potentially strange question but would storing a engine that's been drained of oil upside down for a while be an issue? I need to replace the oil sprayers in the oil pan (should be quick/easy) but I also need to fab a subframe. This would be a lot easier with the engine on a stand upside down. I'm assuming any residual oil could seep past the rings and fill up the cylinders but pulling the plugs or just putting it back right side up for a while would take care of this.

I know you're talking about a book talking about a movie, but although lack of representation of Vietnamese people is a problem in Vietnam war movies, that position misses the point of Apocalypse Now because it isn't actually about Vietnam.

What I'm saying is that's a dumb thing for an author to put in a book.

I've never seen an epoxy painted garage floor hold up, even with proper prep and cure times. I'm in Ohio, so floors see some rough conditions.

The only coating I've seen actually work is an epoxy slurry. I want that so badly, but time/cost/priorities. :(

You can just use normal floor paint which is cheaper than the 2 pack epoxy stuff.

I used this on a concrete garage floor - http://www.leylandtrade.com/products/product-detail/heavy-duty-floor-paint-.aspx

Not as good as the epoxy but half the price and it is doing pretty well in my garage.

Our shop floor at work is holding up incredibly well, but we epoxied it before ever letting anything greasy touch it. I would consider grinding or chiseling out any oily spots till you don't see any oil stain anymore, then washing with regular water and refilling with new mortar/cement maybe? Then acid wash the whole floor.

Note: this is based on zero experience, just what I'd do if I was going to try and make it hold up. When/if we build a shop-garage-mahal, I'll be epoxying it the second the concrete's cured enough.

When she moved to Florida a few years ago and then posted pictures of the house she bought with a private dock out back it was like "wow, she's making insane money all of a sudden." She was clearly mortified when she was exposed but it looks like she's over it. I'd post pictures of her but I know there's at least one rear end in a top hat here who'd track her down and try to ruin my friendship with her. Thankfully her FB is pretty locked down if you haven't known her for a long time so even digging through my friend list won't do much good.

That's the garage, and meh. This is California and we have yearly fire inspections but the FD has never said anything about it. It's wooden clapboard and surrounded by tinderbox-dry drought-stricken pines that will go up like torches in a good neighborhood fire anyway. I keep it stacked a few inches off the siding to prevent rot/stain, and try to stack it tightly to prevent rat nests but that's a losing battle.

Last good brushfire to hit this area was in 1994; my dad watched the fire race 50 yards up a green/vine-covered fenceline, jump twelve feet through the air to the opposite fenceline, and burrow into a mat of pine needles like lava before igniting lower branches on a pine tree. His firehose was short by about 50 feet so he couldn't soak it and just had to sit and watch. The whole house will combust due to ambient heat before that wood pile comes into play.

Lots of DI vehicles have the same problem because there is no fuel flow cleaning the intake ports and valves so oil from the pcv system just builds up.

This is a bmw 335 that had fairly low miles at the time:
