In Training posted:I've heard the 3DS version is drastically retooled, fwiw. It was a concerted effort to get them to localise it. I actually own a physical copy of the PS version, and I freely admit that it's a slog. The Japanese version on 3DS really changed things in a big way and that's why I was so happy to get a NA version.

Definitely nothing on the level of everyone suddenly remembering they all lived in the same orphanage as kids or that the main character is actually a cloned genetic experiment. I love dragon quest but mostly because I have a gambling addiction and any RPG with a casino in it is alright by me.

Phantasium posted:To put it into perspective, the original DQ7 didn't put you into a battle until you played for like an hour. Xenosaga, a game that is plagued by hour long cutscenes, immediately throws you into a fight and a tutorial dungeon. One of the big changes in the remake is completely reworking that first dungeon. It starts muuuuch faster now.

I liked it a lot when I played, but it's a very divisive game. It has some phenomenal dungeon design and I liked the combat, but you're forced to use a Wii motion plus with it, which is all sorts of wonky so the controls often feel off for people. When I played, the wiimote kept adjusting my default position to have me spin more and more towards my left, for example. The combat having "full range motion" is also a big sticking point because it just doesn't work for some people.

SelenicMartian posted:Is Skyward Sword good? The cross-pollinating promo with Pikmin 1 is tempting. Yes. Some people have problems with the motion controls (it may matter if you have a bult-in motion plus Wiimote vs. an original Wii controller with a motion plus dongle) but I thought they worked great. There's padding near the end and your partner is the most annoying Zelda partner yet but it's still a great game with a great art style, fun combat, dungeons and bosses and is worth playing through at least once.

If you softmod your Wii you can patch the game to be significantly better by getting rid of and really annoying prompts and item explanations that repeat every time you reboot.

I would like to hear more about this. I just picked up a Wii (the kind that's GC compatible and everything) for a very good price and I installed some custom software in order to play Newer Mario Brothers*, so I might go for this. Newer Mario Brothers for the Wii is loving amazing and everyone should play it, I just couldn't get it to run on a Wii U. It has classic controller support although for some reason I can't seem to pick up blocks with a classic controller, it's almost certainly the biggest Mario game ever and it may be the best 2d Mario platformer I've ever played. They also put the Hammer suit back in, which is fantastic.

I also softmodded a wii this week! Mine is almost exclusively used to play Windjammers and Project M right now, but I'm looking forward to catching up with the huge pile of mods and homebrew poo poo that people were putting out six years ago.

I lived in Québec when I was young and I had the French version of Link to the Past; I bought another cart of that recently out of pure nostalgia. I just bought Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 for the PS4 and the NTSC version is in English, French, Americas Spanish and Brasilian Portugese, which makes a lot of sense for the NA release of a game.

Skyward Sword's motion controls are good and fun and the strongest case made yet for traditional games controlled mainly via motion, but the game they built around those controls is really bad. The dungeons are all solid and enjoyable, but getting to them is a nightmare of awful busywork and they're all only like two floors, you're just kinda in and out of them. I don't think there are many straight up bad Zelda games but Skyward Sword is absolutely one of them.

This is actually a relief to know; I did not like the motion controls at all, but I can totally accept that they could be a hit-or-miss thing for people. But I'm glad to know at least that the rest of the game being lackluster was spot-on and that I didn't miss much by quitting in the middle in the first dungeon.

Smooth Moves is annoying insomuch as it seems like it should be a great pick-up-and-play party game but the mix of typical rapid-fire Warioware bullshit with a dozen different control schemes means first-time players will just fail every game with no idea what happened or what they were expected to do.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's part of the reason why Game & Wario went in the direction it did. Just a shame that after DIY they stopped making Warioware proper outright.
