Nanbaka is kind of cheaply made (lots of cgi backgrounds, sometimes no backgrounds at all) but it's pretty funny. The guards are really funny and the main guys are pretty funny too.

there's a ton going on, and it's totally unfitting that the word fanservice is used as a catch-all for Strike Witches like it's the genre. The word should be used for ancillary scenes like Rider filling the gently caress out of a t-shirt and naked Gil in Fate/Zero, imo, rather than describing a series like Strike Witches for being founded on its moe traits and mecha musume and uses that to build an entire world with fun characters. The anime has fanservicey butt shots or bath scenes, and sometimes the manga does! But it's not what gives the show heartwarming and funny moments or why the series is still going strong nine years later. Fans don't open up the latest in a metric gently caress-ton of light novels to read a multi-page entry on a girl's panties (Kizu joke goes here).

It annoys me to no end to see 'fanservice' a dull buzzword that's used for a connotation of writing off any elements of a work that don't appeal to the user—and it doesn't stop at sexuality, as you see it all the time with sequels and the like adding moments of characterization that fans have already considered and played with. Sometimes it's just fanservice beats like Nico and Maki doing something cute in Love Live S2 in a wink-nudge moment, and sometimes the entire story and its theme is predicated on an idyllic happy world, like in the third Madoka movie, Rebellion. I don't think it has a place in stigmatizing anime on a holistic level.

that's my two cents.

A lot less than any of those shows, frankly. There's some rare nudity, but at least in strike witches it's almost entirely limited to mid-season comedic support/fanservice-dedicated episodes that don't impact the plot in any significant way. Several times more frequent, but similar to, for example, the hot springs episode in TTGL. Monster Musume lacked a plot, and the plots in DxD and TLR are solely about the main-character becoming increasingly intimate with his harem.

That's not to say that there aren't egregious things about the way it's made... the camera angles are ludicrous, and the main purpose for the girls' tails seems to be to push up their shirts for the sake of panty-shots (None of them wears outer garments on the lower half of her body), and SW season 1 and season 2 had identical plots.

But at its core, it's much more of a "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" show than it is either a gritty military drama or a raunchy romcom.

If you can get past the camera angles (and I don't blame you if you can't, they're absurd), there's some good laughs and sweet character development in there.

More on topic for the eason- I liked the first episode of Brave Witches well enough. Ai Kakuma is using the same voice she did for Yuki in Momokuri last season, which is a perfect fit for that sort of earnest but awkward character. I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of the cast as the season goes on.

I didn't realize Flip Flappers would be on Crunchy, but lo and behold it is. And with a Masumi Ito ED too.

Also I have no idea what the gently caress happened in that first episode.

Eh, it was still a fun enough show overall. And pretty the whole way through.

But yeah, that was a deceptive first episode.

All is for the best, in this, the best of all possible worlds
I watched Brave Witches last night. I was actually surprised that there was LESS fanservice in the form of gratuitous panty shots than its predecessor. (Though there was the bath scene ... but for some reason that didn't even register as sexy to me.)

The whole "Hooray! We're sending our 14-year-old, magic deficient, barely trained daughter out to Europe to fight in a major war!" bit was a little weird though.

Ancient Magus Bride (Weird that this isn't on Anichart...) Since this is being done by Wit, I thought it would be decent, but the first half was pretty boring and odd. They started in a weird place, and that sense of weirdness never really went away (the manga starts in a totally different place). Also Chise's eyes feel totally lifeless for some reason. It was especially weird in the breakfast scene.
Question though, was all that backstory stuff explained at some point in the manga? I read a bunch of the early parts but I didn't keep up with it.

It's not listed on Anichart because it's not a proper show, it's just a series of 3 OVAs that come bundled with volumes of the manga. And it just kind of drops you in as opposed to starting somewhere specific since it's an original side-story meant for people who are already fans.

Ah, that explains things. I feel like I remember the first half being a thing in the manga though.

Since it's a short broadcast, it started about 35 chapters into the manga. So it can jump into the crazy right away!

Is Flip Flappers episode 1 train-safe, do we think? The screenshots I've seen all look safe enough, but the promo material led me to believe that there's going to be a magical girl transformation at one point, and I'd rather not have some rando happen to glance over my shoulder while that poo poo's going on.
