It's a prettier, portable game with the more familiar puns & accents translation, and some more substantial tweaks to the job system. It is still very long, and still very Dragon Quest. Do you want to punch slimes, bankrupt a casino, rescue some countries, and talk to everyone? This is your game.

The remake is certainly better on the whole than the original release, though I find the accents and cutesy names overbearing. But although the job grind is significantly reduced, the game is still intractably tedious. The structure of the game forces that: you solve problems of an island in the past, return in the present day, and go through a little epilogue. This far too often means repeating a journey through a dungeon you were in less than an hour earlier. Sometimes you have to go through the same location four or six or eight times. I was starting to go crazy. It's close to the last Dragon Quest game people should play (but at least it'd tide you over for a while).

IX was lackluster, in both story and mechanics (Did the jobs even MEAN anything?), the multiplayer was half assed. In my opinion, 3, 4 and 5, and 8 are the best Dragon Quests to ever play. Hell, DQ3 was actually the first game I ever played on the gameboy color.

While, in retrospect, the main plot is a bit... unfocused, the vignettes hit me pretty hard. It seemed that in every other city or so you encountered a tragedy that you couldn't prevent; you just cleaned up the mess as best as you could and moved on, hoping to do better, but the game rarely gave you a break. This built up until the climax, which was honestly rather weak (and maybe a bit nonsensical), except for what it cost the main character. All that to say, DQIX made me sad, and that is not a feeling that I associate with bad games. Just my 2 G.

Was DQ7 the one on the PS1 where you the main character raided Link's closet? I forget why, but I gave up on that game in record time. Probably loading time.ddegenha posted:Are we counting Dragon Quest Heroes? Because I had a blast with that game. Rocket Slime was an amazing game (so long as you like puns). You probably gave up on it because the opening is infamously long. It takes about 2 hours of talking to basically everyone on a tiny island before you see your first slimes, but the 3DS version cut that down pretty considerably.

Rocket Slime is my favorite DQ game. The remakes of 4-6 are alright. I took one look at 7's opening and ran screaming in the other direction. 9 bored me. I'd like to try DQ8 but apparently they keep pushing back the 3DS remake, so...

Honestly, DQ5 is probably my favourite DQ game. It did something fairly remarkable at the time in terms of narrative, and the DS remake is so good (especially with party member chats) that I'm genuinely surprised that nobody's LPed it yet.

Another Vote for Debra, she had the best party chat period. For some unknown reason I have Nera memorized as Flora even though I've only played the DS version, its weird.

Rabbi Raccoon posted:I never played the DS version, but Flora was actually one of the better mages in the SNES version, plus you got some extra treasures along the way (including a VERY early Water Flying Clothes) Problem with Flora/Nera is that Daughter is pretty much her on steroids, and magic is generally subpar compared to physical attacks in the older DQs anyways. Deb got around this by being a VERY good physical fighter with pretty good support magic rather than an offensive mage. She had access to a number of unique double hit weapons and she could even use the Hera Hammer as an alternative to Sancho. Bianca's problem is that she tries to be both a mage and a physical fighter, but comes up short in both. Also you still get the items if you marry Deb since she's from the same family as Nera. And like I said, unlike the other 2 wives (who are kinda static in personality) Deb goes through some developments. mauman fucked around with this message at 04:49 on Oct 28, 2016 |

I seem to recall a lot of her party chats being pretty interesting both in themselves and as a progression - there's some clear evidence of her warming to the player character over time, and she has some insightful stuff to say about a lot of random crap. In any event one of the things the DS version did right is make the choice an actual choice, rather than the choice between Bianca and 'what the hell is wrong with you', given as I think in the original Flora/Nera didn't level past 10 or some ridiculously low number. Edit: but clearly, what I'm saying is that OFS should LP DQ5DS after this one. Y'know, when it finishes, in 2020 sometime.
