Still, yeah, you lose out on Gai, Gale and the Strike's IWSP by going for it.
You also lose out on the X-Aestivalis (a worthless piece of poo poo) and the Layzner Mk.II (an extremely good upgrade option) by going for Great Zeorymer, too.

Most people talk about how Great Zeorymer just does the twin lords casually, just splits itself in two and attacks, to prove its power. I still like to point out that its second weakest attack is a set of twelve nukes, then the Earthquake super weapon, since twelve nukes is just nowhere near enough for a proper attack, apparently.

If someone says it one more time I'm having Florina show up as a corpse. I'm not even kidding, I was pissed off with people doing that shit back in 2010, and I'm not dealing with it now in 2016.
The Great Zeorymr would mean more if you couldn't absolutely crush the game with a combination of the Granteed, Mazinkaiser and Nadesico. Due to J's AI (Prioritize what you can hit, not what you can do damage to.) Waves of enemies will throw themselves against absolute beasts of machines, who, with a combination of cheap, decently ranged attacks, will utterly destroy everything that gets close. If the game weren't up its own rear end about reinforcements (The first map alone has I believe 3 waves and one LP of J did a reinforcement counter to prove how absurd it was) and actually bothered to let its series interact.

For those who haven't played. J has all of its series taking place in the same world, but doesn't attempt to resolve conflicts, such as how the Plants and their Mobile Suits are still so valued and supposedly difficulty to control when Full Metal Panic's AS's are running about, Super Robots piloted by Teenagers are all the rage, and there are mobile fighters, not to mention George's butler, who pilots his own MS with a steering wheel. Or mentioning "Neo" colonies when referring to G Gundam without, again, reconciling how they're different from the Plants. By far the biggest sin is that it rarely adjusts the plot to match with the changed nature of more series being present. SEED is played completely straight, even though the way it's positioned makes it stupid to play it straight. J would basically be redone by SRW W, which addresses most, if not all, of the complaints.

But on the topic of Great Zeorymer, I thought it was a powerful, but unnecessary unit. Like Omni said, when you've got Granteed, Mazinkaiser and Nadesico, GZ has less of an impact. I went for it once and felt that other secrets could be more useful than it. But not the X-Aestivalis. That can rust on the bench.

Is the X-Aestvalis a Ban-Presto original, or just something that was protecting the moon base or Nergal HQ for an episode and I've just forgotten about it?

It appeared in a single episode, was taken by some jerk, and then that jerk went insane and performed a very dumb heroic sacrifice.

I don't remember the details at all, I watched Nadesico a long time ago, but I remember that much.

As I remember it, the X-Aestivalis fires it's Gravity Cannon once, overloads the reactor doing so, and the pilot has to bail out as the X explodes.

AradoBalanga
Jan 3, 2013

And in the games it appears in, the X-Aestivalis only has a basic Gravity Cannon attack that costs a buttload of EN, and a MAPW version that costs more EN. Neither attack is post-movement, as well. Thus, it is just as useless as it is in-show.

Like, maybe the only use I could see the X-Aestivalis having is with the Support Request mechanic in W allowing the unit to back up a front line attacker. But not much else.

When the two most useful things a unit can do are glitches that only benefit you by funneling kills to an average pilot and allowing you to keep an incredibly lovely pilot when he ducks out for plot reasons, you know you have a lovely unit.

Yeah, J playing Gundam SEED straight makes the Earth Alliance make look like the biggest idiots. They can't get mobile suits working despite the Aestvalises and the Arm Slaves just running around until Kira goes "this is a Unix system, I know this!" and reprograms the Strike in 10 seconds.

That and the never-ending reinforcements kind of turned me off of it.

another facet of J that was kind of weird: Yuratei actually gets her own final boss mech, the Hau Dragon from some spinoff material, and it looks pretty sweet! it's pretty much Great Zeorymer Lite. it'd be rad if she used this in MX even though...considering that Yuratei decided to basically blow herself up for the greater good, I forget why she even rolled out in this in J

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hdHrCOwi4w

but! ...if you're doing it right, you should never see this thing, because if you're getting Great Zeorymer, she just shows up in that instead. it is slightly unfortunate! but I hope we see both of them again if SRW ever uses the show again (and like, all the robots look pretty cool from it so why the heck not!)

I'm pretty sure the Great Zeorymer is to the Hau Dragon mech what normal Zeorymer is to all the other mechs in the series, but it'd be fun seeing Yura pull out her "ultimate mech" only for Masaki Kihara to go "Heh, that's cute, let me try that." and he just transforms Zeorymer on the spot while everyone else throws up their hands in disbelief at the level of bullshit this guy manages to pull off every time someone thinks they've got the upper hand.

Maybe Yuratei herself is a secret character, and in the scenario where that happens she's the playable character, struggling vainly against Masaki in the Great Zeorymer. If you fulfilled her secret, your team shows up in the nick of time, if you don't she blows herself up for the greater good (which accomplishes jack poo poo against the hax that is Great Zeorymer).

Now, here's the problem I forsee with this idea:

Whether or not you got the secret, you'd probably end up getting Masato after the fact because main character. And he'd already be in Great Zeorymer because why go back to normal Zeorymer after seeing Great? Which means that the game gives you Great without forsaking secret units. This is already a problem.

But if you get the Yuratei secret, she'd presumably show up in Hau Dragon, which, as we've described, is basically Great Zeorymer--. So with secrets, you can get two Great Zeorymers, except one isn't quite as horrendously busted.

Do you forsee the problem with this?

Yuratei and Great would be different secrets. Yuratei deploys in Hau Dragon and suicides if you don't get her, and Great Zeorymer would presumably be destroyed and Masato goes back to vanilla Zeorymer if you don't get it.

For maximum suffering, they'd be mutually exclusive, but getting two Great Zeorymers isn't such a big deal in an era where we can get two Mazinkaisers and two Salvator Model Fafners.

I never saw the wisdom or reasoning behind making secrets mutually-exclusive unless there was a good reason for it (like choosing between Mazinkaiser/Shin Getter and "powered-up" versions of their predecessors in the Alpha games, just because there's no reason to have both*). Sure, it encourages replaying the game to see the other secrets, but I prefer a system like UX, where secrets you unlocked in previous playthroughs stay unlocked regardless of route splits taken. Most SRWs only have two or three really powerful secrets, anyway, the rest are just fan favorite characters and mechs for people who want to put as many characters from a specific series on their team as possible, so it's not like there's anything that would ruin the game's balance.

*Okay Boss in Mazinger Z is cool and all, but they made that happen in Alpha Gaiden, plus in some games it means giving up Nuke and Mucha.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

Location: Hundred Demons’ Island Fortress

Brai’s getting a visitor from the Vegans and he’s seeking an alliance; Hidler sniffs at the guy’s call at proposing that considering they’re invading Earth right now. The Vegan envoy tells Hidler to watch it, for he is Zuril: chief scientist of the Vegan Army and the man in charge of conducting these negotiations. That is to say, his words are the words of King Vega.
Hidler is about to get in Zuril’s face when Brai stops him, and starts by complimenting the Vegan ambassador on actually finding this hidden base. Zuril thanks him but says it wasn’t difficult for Vegan science… which, Brai figures, means they could also attack them place if they so desired.
Zuril praises his intelligence but Gura doesn’t appreciate his threats; Zuril handwaves their concerns away, adding that he doubts the Vegans would escape unharmed were they to actually fight the mighty Hundred Demons. Plus, as he just said, they wish to form an alliance since both their groups have the same obstacles to remove.

Brai appreciates Zuril’s gumption in coming here by his lonesome and does see his point – they DO have common enemies in the humans and, specially, the Magnate Ten. Much as Brai is loath to do it, he concedes that we’re a mighty force even among the weak human race. With that in mind, he agrees to the alliance.
However, it is not in Brai’s nature to take people’s words on blind faith but Zuril didn’t expect him to – the Vegans can give him a display of their might.

Good because Brai’s just got intel that the Getter has returned to the Saotome Lab… and the Magnate Ten’s elsewhere. That sounds perfect to Zuril, as he's got this energy neutralization field device to give them as a gift.
The thing requires a good amount of energy to work and needs to be installed in a large aircraft but, if the demons can provide, he believes it can be put to excellent use. What does he mean? “OPERATION KAMIKAZE BOMBER!”
Sounds good to Brai, who figures they can take the Getter Ray Amplifier from the lab’s smoldering ruins; moreover, he’d love to see the despair on the Getter pilots’ faces as the place falls before their very eyes.

Zuril is off to install the field generator and Brai has Gura help him out. Vegan professes to have heard much about Gura’s intellect, so he’s grateful for a chance to work with him; the sentiment is mutual, as Gura is curious about Vegan science.
As they leave, Hidler still objects to this alliance but Brai tells him to relax – he doesn’t trust the aliens once bit. Still, he figures the Vegans need this alliance more than they’re letting on: their base in on the moon, so they’re likely seeking the demons’ help as a precaution against the Gulfer and Giganos.

Still, the situation hasn’t changed for Brai’s group: though the Tekkoryu are no more, the Gyandolar have now gone a lot more active. Plus, there are the MU with their constant hounding that the unit that emerged from Tokyo Jupiter, along with other independent groups. All of these will have to be dealt with eventually.
The Earth Sphere is in a state of flux and it’s among that chaos that smart players can win it all. That’s the Hundred Demons and, so, Brai will readily use whoever and whatever he can to make it happen.
So if the Vegans think they can use them as pawns against other enemies, Brai will use them instead – Hidler’s to go with Zuril and keep a close eye on him. HAIL BRAAAAAAAAI!

Over at the lab, Saotome apologizes for calling the Getter Team over in such a hurry, but it was no problem as our squad’s currently standing by at GEAR HQ. Hugo and Aqua have been sent along as escorts and she promises they won’t be bothers.
As for why Saotome called them over, he wants to do some improvements on the Getter Ray control system on the bot. The Get Machines are already being worked on by the lab’s facilities and, if everything goes according to plan, it’ll give the Getter a nice boost in power.
Benkei’s psyched and Saotome muses that Getter Ray research is advancing day-by-day; while it’s unfortunate that that they must use it for combat, Saotome likes to see it as being used for peace if they can defeat the forces of evil with it.

And they’ll have a chance to do that right now, as the alarm sounds the approach of Hundred Demon units. Saotome says the Get Machines’ overall adjustments have already been made, so they should be ready to deploy.
Off they go, then, Hugo and Aqua also tagging in to defend the lab.

Mission 30 (Earth Route) – The Shine of the Red Dragon

As the enemy troops pour in, Hidler tells Zuril that they've tried so often to topple this lab, without success due to Getter and co. always getting in the way. Well, those friends aren't here right now, so they just need to stomp the Getter and wreck the place.
Our units deploy and Hidler is quick to wave his fist and proclaims that this spot will mark our graves today. Ryouma’s surprised to see the demons and Vegans working together, though Hayato figures we ought to be grateful: we get to beat two birds with one stone.
Benkei worries if our three units can hold against all these guys but Aqua’s already gotten in touch with the Nahel Argama – they’re already on the way. So, we just need to keep the attackers from reaching the lab.

Zuril and Hidler pull back to watch the incoming fireworks and our people quickly smell fish. Still, trap or not, we don’t really have a choice but to go for it – Hayato points to the big ship as the target to beat.
As the Saotome Lab closes itself up, Ryouma leads the charge: we can’t let even a single enemy close in on the building.

As they said, don’t let an enemy unit get in the target area of you lose. From what I’ve seen, the only AI that’s hard-wired to go after the lab is the Mecha Fortress Demon itself and, with only three units, you can’t really keep it pinned down (and it’s got high movement). Losing anyone is also a game over, so unless you really buffed Michiru, you have two units.
Prior knowledge of events can spare you from having to outright restart this mission, so keep this in mind: have anyone attack the ship by turn TWO. Any later than that and you’ll have, at least, a headache in your hands.

Both our units cast Accel and boost ahead. Note the dense forests around here, so you’ll want to set the Garmraid/Cerberus down and use the Getter Liger to benefit from the terrain.

I reckon I’ll alternate between the new songs.

Gang on those Minifoos to get Open Get and TE Sphere running ASAP.

Attacking aerial units obviously isn’t the Liger’s bread and butter but Chain Attack still hits nicely.

Enemy Phase!

The Vegan Saucerbeasts stay put but the Demons move on the offensive.

As do the Minifoos.

Easy. That’s all but one of them dead at the hands of Hayato and Hugo.

Player Phase!

I actually let Hugo do a support attack, only to figure out what Zuril meant with that fancy-named gadget. Yup, it’s another one of THOSE.

The ship didn’t take any damage from our attacks – it’s obviously something different from the demons’ usual bots. Hugo wonders if it might be self-regenerating but, no, Aqua and Saotome have already figured it out: the thing’s got an energy field around it, like the Space Monster Tetsuya fought the other day.
Worse, Saotome’s scanned the thing and it’s apparently loaded to the brim with explosives. Yes, they’re going to fling it into the lab.

Ryouma’s not having it and, when he tries to attack the thing, gets the Getter blasted away; Hayato’s taken the brunt of the hit, though, and the attack’s busted his leg. Hugo tells them to back off and let him handle this but the Getter Team calls it crazy: how could he, alone, stand against an enemy that’s immune to our weapons?
Still, as a pilot of a multi-person mech, Hugo knows that one pilot being impaired will screw up the entire unit’s movements. Aqua agrees, saying they can’t fight like that. Ryouma says they can’t pull back, though: the lab’s pretty much home to the three of them, so they won’t just watch it go up in smoke.
Hayato agrees and says not to worry about him, and Hugo knows he’s not going to change their minds. We’ll just have to make do until the Argama gets here.

OK, so here’s the deal: it’ll be another four turns before we can really deal with the ship and, all that time, it’ll continue on a beeline to the lab. If you get the timer running on turn two, then you’ll just make it; later than this, and you’ll have to try and slow it down by setting up small walls with your three units. Risky since, as I said, Michiru is very frail.
The wiki I checked didn’t say anything about the plot kicking in if you killed all other enemy units, so I decided not to risk it. Attack it now just to be safe.

And Hugo busies himself shaving off half this Shield Demon’s HP.

Enemy Phase!

Ryouma gets ganged up a bit but he soon gets enough morale to start Open Getting.

Well, hello there.

Bonk! Got my barrier running!

Player Phase!

Just to be safe, Hayato tags in and Michiru heals them up.

I’m moving Hugo back along with them just in case I miscounted the ship’s movement range and need to make a quick wall.

Enemy Phase!

This Horned Demon finally got in range.

He slaps us for a bit but not much.

Hayato actually gets mobbed as well but handles it nicely.

Also, look at this. Either the Vegans got some new stealth tech on these two Gubigubi saucerbeasts or there’s a bug with their model.
They still die easily enough to the Garmraid’s superior firepower.

Next few turns is just me backing away from the enemy to keep an eye on the ship, so let’s skip that.

Player Phase!

: Hoho… You’re still at it, eh, Getter Robo?
: The Mother Burn…! It’s back?!
: Psh, they wanna watch the show from courtside? Come on, now…!
: Heheheh… do fight for as long as you can, Getter Robo. And, then, despair as you fail to defend your dear lab.
: Ryou, this isn’t looking good!
: If we don’t find a way to destroy that Demon Robo’s energy field before it reaches the lab…!
: Isn’t there anything we can do, Aqua?!
: It’s simple, in theory. Its field works by dispersing incoming force across the created boundary… so we just need to hit it with more energy than it can disperse.
: In other words, we just need to hit it real hard?
: Yeah, but the problem is creating enough energy to pull it off!
: Then get to work and start charging Terminus Energy right now – the Garmraid Blaze’ll bust hi shield!
: It doesn’t work like that! We can’t charge that much energy at the drop of a hat, you know!
: Our TE Engine may be a newer model but its stability is far from perfect!
: Then our only option is to ram that thing and pin it down…!
: Right, if we use what we’ve already charged to power the TE Sphere, we can buy some time!
: Stop! If you do something like that, you’ll—!
: Ease up – we’re not about to die here!
: Yeah! And, regardless, we need to do whatever we can to hold the line until the Nahel Argama gets here…
: (We’ve no choice now… We’ll have to try that…!)
: Can you hear me, Getter Team? The only way you’ll defeat that giant Demon Robot is with the Getter’s new weapon!
: N-New…?!
: What new weapon?! Since when do we have something like that?!
: Was that what those improvements were for…?!
: Correct – the new weapon’s already installed and usable. It hasn’t been tested in live combat yet but it should be able to pierce the enemy’s field.
: What is that weapon, professor?!
: I’ve dubbed it the Shine Spark! Upon the Getter Shine signal, the three of you must press your energy convergence pedals in unison, sending it into the Dragon’s core.
: However, if your timing is off by even a tenth of a second, the energy will not converge. And considering the amount needed, you’ll only have a single chance to do this!
: We only got one shot…
: But if we pull it off…!
: Wait, what about Hayato? You need to press those pedals in unison and his leg is injured!
: Don’t worry about me, Michiru. It’s just a flesh wound.
: B-But!
: Hayato…!
: There’s no time for doubts, Ryou! Get your head in gear!
: But if we fail, that’ll be it!
: Hah, I can’t well put on a poor show right in front of Musashi’s grave… Come on. Let’s pull this off and send that Demon Robo to kingdom come!
: Alright… Let’s bring our hearts together as one, Hayato, Benkei!
: You got it!

*Getter Dragon moves after the Mecha Fortress Demon.*

: It’s all in your hands… you must succeed!
: Hm? What are they up to?!
: You guys ready? We’ve only got one shot!
: Leave it to me!
: I’ll do my part… even if I need to snap this leg in half!
: Then let’s do it! Press those pedals at the exact same time!
: 3!
: 2!
: 1!
: NOW!
: Yeah!
: Uurk…rrgh!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9Qs6ibxWF8

And, boom, success! Hidler, Aqua and Hugo are very much amazed at the strength of the Getter’s energy, blowing the Demon Robo with a single hit. Hayato’s still good and, better yet, he won’t be getting crap from Musashi in the afterlife.
Hidler is very miffed but yells that this changes nothing – we’re still outnumbered! … Hayato tells him to look over there and see if he can say that again.

Aaay, it’s the cavalry! Kaine strikes a cool pose, yelling that Kaine Wakaba and friends are here to the rescue. Asuka is in no way putting up with him setting himself as the top dog and Kaine tells her to just play along here. Unfortunately, play along with his stupidity isn’t part of her contract.
Misato prods them to cut the chit-chat and deploy, turning the tables in our favor. The Getter’s got an empty tank after that attack, though it’s easily with some energy that Saotome beams from the lab. As Hidler froths at the mouth, Zuril sees that he’ll need to adjust plans.

Duke spots the demons and Vegans working together and yells that, even together, we still will never bend to their evil! And, rather, Domon figures we can teach something to them: what it truly means to unite forces!
Zuril isn’t impressed and sends out a bevy of new units. These are all enlarged space creatures and cyborg Vegan beasts, boasting power several times greater than saucerbeasts. Hidler realizes the guy was holding out of them but, on Bright’s command, we’ll turn these to mush.

Still got a few stragglers from the original batch but they’re easily dispatched.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6MH6papEpE
And here’s Aqua’s strongest attack.

Domon and Chibodee wreck the last Jinjin, giving the cowboy Invincible plus levels in Prevail and Shield Defense.

These are the new Midifoos.

They’re still made of spit and papier maché.

The Vegans now have mass-produced Bongs. Hikaru wrecks one when Tetsuya supports her with a combined attack.
The man himself moves forward to slap a Midifoo.

Get to it, Light.

Set that EWAC front and center.

Sai joins Hayato to tear through a Horned Demon.

The Midifoos continue to provide easy morale.

Like so.

And you get the idea.

Enemy Phase!

Zuril doesn’t prioritize anyone, only going for whatever’s closest.

: So, the demons and evil aliens are buddying up, eh? Guess birds of a feather do flock together!
: Silence! Don’t you dare bunch us together with those Vegans!
: And what exactly do you mean by that, Marshal Hidler?
: Erm… That’s…
: Aw, you’re breaking up already? Then lemme put the final nail in both your coffins!

That’s an easy 5000 damage. These Mother Burns are quickly falling victim to our power creep.

Show the Vegans what we think of their upgrades, Shinji.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgrkANEY64M
This thing’s very twitchy. Also, Shinji takes out a pair of Midifoos.

Domon is suitably impressed.

Player Phase!

Zuril’s Voice Actor: Banjou Ginga (other known works: Timp in Xabungle, Liquid Snake in MGS, Gihren Zabi and many, many more).

Balendos 2.0, the Mother Burn melts under any concentrated fire (more so than other enemies). Yawn.

And here we go: Shinji’s got enough morale to bust out his hanzo steel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS2SfovWfuM
Folded one kabillion times, it chops, slices and dices through the toughest monsters of the week!

And if you're curious about the weapon's name and missed it in the thread, look up Magoroku Kanemoto. He was a renowned swordsmith in the late muromachi period.

Sai softens the other Zumezume for Masato.

That’s very dead.

The pair of Grangens fall to Tetsuya and Ayato.

Oh, and this is the Vega Beast King Gori.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hskbAV2MHwo
They really DID mechanize random alien creatures to throw at us.

Kouji finishes the job, triggering the Xephon to get serious.

Only Zuril left, so let’s get to it.

: Just a little bit more and the lab would’ve been a smoldering crater...! Blast you, Getter Robo!
: Get used to that feeling! You demons won’t be pulling anything with the lab or Earth while we’re here!
: And you demons ever hear the words “robbing Peter to pay Paul”? Everyone saw what cowards you are now!
: Shut your mouth! This was also one of our many plans to crush you!
: Oh, really? Then get out of the Vegans’ shadow and take us on yourselves!

: Huh…? He’s looking at the EVA…?
: Hmm… I’d heard stories but to actually find a unit like this… Earth’s weapons truly are very interesting.

: It’s always one worthless plan after the next with you guys, huh?
: Mine is the greatest intellect in the Vegan army! You dare berate my plan?!
: That’s right! While I don’t know how smart you actually are, it can’t be much if you’re using it for evil!

: My fists will tear your evil bonds apart!
: Hmph… you'll challenge me with melee tactics? Savage!

: Show me what the Grendizer’s capable of, Duke Fleed!
: You’re not Balendos… who are you?!
: My name is Zuril… Planet Vega’s chief scientist.
: You came here all the way from your homeworld?
: Indeed, Duke Fleed. And I’ll return with your head and this planet as offerings to King Vega!

: The Vegans and the Hundred Demons… what a surprise to see you baddies buddying up!
: Ah, has fear taken you? You’ve no chance of victory now!
: Say what now? All we need to do now is kick both your asses and we’ll be saving even some time!

: Oh? That is quite the curious energy reading. I must claim this machine.
: I won’t let anyone else get their hands on the Zeorymer – least of all evil people like you!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh-MyFMN3uY
Have we ever seen the Zeorymer triggering its Double Image?

I’ll have Kaine end this to grab some levels.

Zuril sees their attack has failed and moves to retreat. Hidler commands that they must fight to the bitter end but Zuril sees no point in prolonging this – besides, today was simply the opening round.
That’s all enemies down and Saotome thanks Bright for the assist – all in a day’s work. Duke is silent and Maria knows he’s worried about the seeming alliance between the Vegans and the Demons.
This might help them now but Tetsuya figures their alliance won’t last: unlike us, both sides only care for their own interests. Duke hopes it’ll be as he says.

Notable loot today: a Screw Module, a Cartridge, and a Megabooster.

Back at the Demon’s base, Hidler wants to know what the hell happened back there – Zuril says he simply didn’t expect the Getter to have been furnished with a new weapon. That’s not what Hidler is asking, though: why did he withhold some of his forces?
Zuril says blithely that he figured he could win with that few forces, and it's an “honor” that Hidler would be counting on the Vegan forces that much. Brai forestalls any further argument, though he cautions that a failure is still a failure - he wants Zuril to go all out from the get-go next time.
Zuril accepts, though he has a request for Brai: Super Alloy nu-Z, the rare metal Great Mazinger's body is made out of. He’s been quite interested in it for a while now, you see. The problem, Gura says, is that all metal available is kept under lock and key at the Science Fortress Lab.

Hmhmm… but Zuril figures the demons have ways of making it happen. Indeed, Brai decides to humor him and offers to have some of their infiltrated agents in the upper echelons of the Federation government to force the lab to offer some of its stock.
As Zuril praises the mighty emperor, Hidler huffs at the cheeky guy – clearly untrustworthy. Either way, Brai asks him to coordinate with Zuril and start planning their next attack. They can’t afford to leave the Getter at large now that it’s grown even stronger.
Zuril quietly sneers at these simpletons – getting his hands on the metal will mean the completion of one of his missions. Now all he'll need to do is send it to the moon.

Oh, and since we've just seen all of the Garmraid's important attacks, here's how they look in glorious future graphix (fair warning, there are some spoilers for 2nd OG and OGMD)! :pcgaming:

Sorry, I'm rushing to see if I can't wrap this LP up by February - my availability will be running progressively shorter then. :flashfact:

I wouldn't leave this unfinished even if I can't, mind, but things would be simpler if I did.

I think that was the Neo Granzon for Dark Prison. But yeah, I agree, unless you get it near the end, then it's fine for the first playthrough.

That would explain why it seems like you're blazing through this. I got busy and fell behind, and it felt like I couldn't catch up to you. But seriously, no apologies needed for trying to LP this quickly.

"Most plans are critically flawed by their own logic. A failure at any step will ruin everything after it. That's just basic cause and effect. It's easy for a good plan to fall apart. Therefore, a plan that has no attachment to logic cannot be stopped."
It's interesting how Banpresto just one day decided to stop using movie-exclusive enemies from the Mazinger/Getter crossovers. Pikudrone and Gilgilgan were staples of SRW in the early days, with one or both appearing frequently. Granted, they eventually shifted from using the original Mazinger/Getter to the Mazinkaiser OVA/Shin Mazinger and Getter Robo Armageddon, but even in games like Z, where it's using all the original Dynamic robots (no Mazinkaiser at all, in fact), none of the movie enemies made an appearance. I guess they decided the licensing fees weren't worth it.

Mission 31 (Moon Route) – The Shining Blade is With Us

We’ve made it to the Spiral Castle’s sector and Harry quickly lays our trap: SUPER RECOVERY WEAPON! ELECTROMAGNETIC NET!
As everyone deploys, Ginga and Hokuto start scanning the area for Ragou, nowhere in sight. The Gigas aren’t impressed to see us once again try to attack this place with this few troops – we’re not taking them seriously, it seems. Still, the Castle figures this is good for them: they can destroy the Dendoh and take the last Data Weapons right now.
But, of course, they cannot let Ragou come outside lest it get injured and the emperor get mighty pissed.

The Gulfer deploy in mass but Ragou isn’t among their numbers – is it inside the castle? Vega ponders that even the Gulfer may not yet know what to do with something like it, so Rom suggests that it might be currently restrained within.
Which means we need to find a way to lure it out; once that’s done, the Dendoh will act as bait (what with it being Ragou’s primary target) and bring it inside the area with the trap. Once it’s caught in the electromagnetic net, we’ll extract its data.
Vega does warn that, once Ragou is out, to bring it straight to the area. Not only is it likely other stuff will emerge once it comes outside, our mission here still isn’t to conquer the Spiral Castle. Ginga and Hokuto confirm.

: OK, then first we’ll destroy these interceptors and cause a racket around the Spiral Castle!
: Roger that!
: Let’s do this, then! Operation “Catch that Ragou” is a go!
: Huuh? What was that?
: Come on, you gotta think of a cooler name than that!
: Um… Then, it’ll be… Operation “Get over here, Ragou!”
: Hmm… that’s still lacking some “oomph” to it.
: It sounds weird, that’s what.
: Aaah, come on! Enough nitpicking! How about this, then: Operation “Go, Dendoh! Blow the Gulfer sky-high!”
: Th-that’s SO corny!
: Isn’t that the name of C-Drive’s first concert?
: C-Drive?
: A really famous pop trio. You don’t know them?
: Nope.
: Heh, not very trendy, are we?
: Oh! Does this mean you’re a C-Drive fan, Camille?
: No, not exactly…
: Hey, we’re about to start out operation! This isn’t the time for chit-chat—
: …There’s no problem, I don’t think.
: Huh?
: Better they be at ease than stressed. Today’s mission is already difficult enough.
: Yeah, you can always count of the team’s jokesters to lighten the mood at times like this. That’s how it worked for our old crew, you know. (Don’t talk about HER, please…)
: Hmm. I suppose it is better than having a dark cloud over everyone…
: Then, troops, initiate Operation “Go, Dendoh. Blow the Gulfer sky-high.”
: Right on! Here! WE! GOOOOOO!
: Hang in there, Unicorn, Leo! We’ll be bringing Ragou’s data back for you!

Mission Objective: Destroy all enemies (and, eventually, get Ragou inside the target area)
Mission Failure: Dendoh, Rom or the Nadesico destroyed.
To make things simpler for you, don’t move the Dendoh too deep into the area; and, when you’re about to have but TWO enemies left alive, make sure the kids still have their move.

We can leave the basic Gulfer to our slower folks. Rom goes for the stronger RoBeasts.

By the way, I gave Rom a Haro. He now dodges better than most of our Reals (except Amuro, who also has a Haro, and the Dijeh with its S ranks).

Speaking of, Amuro and Kazuya nab some easy kills.

Camille fails to oneshot, so Hugo goes in.

Here we go.

Everyone else is moving in.

Enemy Phase!

All RoBeasts except the basic Gulfer stand back.

Ah, well.

Player Phase!

Judau learns Zeal after killing one of them baby Gulfer. For a hefty SP price, this gives your unit a second move.

Forward!

Thanks, Rom.

Amuro sets it up, Kazuya moves in.

Boom.

Quattro sets himself up to counter-slap everything in sight, while Iino and Camille finish the third Orbiton.

Might as well finish Quattro’s target.

This is a good point for you to stop moving the Dendoh forward, too.

Roux and Jet cut two Orbitons down to half.

Enemy Phase!

The Gulfer knights only seem to attack if you actually get in their range.

Holy crap, that’s 6k damage from a piddly bazooka. I’ll never stop being surprised at how strong this thing is.

Quattro also oneshots another Faitas while Jet finishes his Orbiton.

Player Phase!

Harry reports a call from GEAR, informing us that Ragou’s virus has started running full-speed again. Our time is running out and a pissed off Ginga wants the thing to show its face right NOW.
Hokuto figures we’ll have to raid the Spiral Castle proper but Camille reminds him of what Vega said. Our target is, above all, Ragou: if they lose their patience, they might well lose sight of what we’re meant to do. There’ll be no point to any of this if we don’t get the thing’s data in time.
Ginga asks if we can afford to sit here but Camille is sure it’ll come over – it’ll respond to the ongoing battle.

Kept this one alive for Leina, as she needs some levels.

Good.

The Purus take out the last Orbitons.

Now for the knights.

Couple of them are softened up thanks to Quattro – they’ll die in a couple of hits.

There goes Knight Virus.

Error goes to Kirakuni and Vega.

And that’s all but two mooks dead.

*RUUUUUUMBLE!*

: Hrk…!
: My lord, was that…?!
: Ragou… it’s gone mad!
: What?!
: …
: !!
: What’s going on with you two?!
: Maybe it’s—!
: It’s coming, Hokuto, Ginga!
: !

: …
: There it is!
: The guest of honor has finally arrived…!
: And now the real fight begins!
: Hokuto, Ginga, lure Ragou to the capture zone.
: OK! Ginga, put the Data Weapons away!
: Yeah, we can’t let that thing get the Boar and Dragon too.
: Come back, Dragon!
: Come back, Boar!

*If the Dendoh’s equipped with a Drive, it’ll be turned off. You can’t put them back on for now.*

: Hokuto, Ginga, you remember where the capture zone is, right?
: Yeah, it’s there!

: Good. Lure it over to that area – everyone else, do not engage. There’ll be no data for us to take if Ragou’s destroyed.
: Roger that!
: Alright, Ragou, come and get us!

So, yeah, it’s a repeat of what Boss did with the Gilgilgan but the target area is smaller and Ragou’s got double movement; as such, this one’s a lot harder to pull off. With its six range attack, Ragou’ll only move if it has to and that’s why I told you to keep the Dendoh’s move – you can get far enough away to make him run twice.
This is the kind of thing that you kinda need to get it on your first approach or Ragou will simply start dashing around the target area, never stepping inside until you lead it faaaaar away and try again.
Move your people back along with the Dendoh because it’s quite likely you’ll need to wall off Ragou’s path. Make it take detours to compensate for his high movement range.

We’ll still kill the other knights for some goodies, mind.
After Knight Bug is down, we send the Dendoh as far back as can be.

Enemy Phase!

Absolute and Witter sees that Ragou’s going straight after the Dendoh: not good, as there’s the risk the remaining two Data Weapons will be killed by it.
The Spiral Castle sends out some Capture RoBeasts to bring the beastie back.

Not like those things will be a problem to us.

Good. The new Capture RoBeasts are immediately torn to fine shreds as they attack Quattro – only one’s left alive (the one that attacked Amuro).

Player Phase!

I needed to confirm Ragou’s range and noticed that, with Eris and Torres, no one here knew Scan. So, I used the Nadesico’s function and was surprised to see that, thanks to Ruri’s Hacking skill, we get this special scene.

As Kirakuni kills the last RoBeast, Quattro finishes Knight Lock.

Made a nice wall here. This should be good enough.

Enemy Phase!

:thurman:

: Ragou’s just entered the capture zone!
: Activate the electromagnetic net, then.
: Yes, ma’am!

[IMG]http://lpix.org/2542414/KirakuniNormal].png[/IMG]: Alright! We got ‘im!
: My Lord, Ragou’s…!
: Urgh…!
: Now we just need to collect its data!
: HAUD IT!
: Who—?!

: :siren: Whare thare is light, thare is darkness! Whare thare is justice, thare is evil! The emissary of ‘Ell, Devil Saturn 6, ‘as arrived! :siren:
: D-Devil Saturn 6… why now?!
: And what exactly do you think you’re doing, mimicking my brother?!
: Ah’m pure tired of always doing the same thing. Sae, Ah figured Ah’d shake things up ‘n’ gie that a go.
: Hey, if you’re doing that, then why not go all the way and give us one of those speeches?
: Now’s not for time for any of that, Saburouta!
: You… why have you come here?
: Jist a moving-oot pairtie… Nae, Ah’m kidding. We’re ‘ere coz we’ve git something tae ask thae mingers.
: Us?!
: Aye. Whare are ye hiding that Meteor Cube?
: … Do you honestly expect us to just answer that?
: Ah guess nae. Then we’ll jist have tae MAKE ye answer… awright, yer up!
: Hmhmhmhm…
: You… Bug Newman?!
: That’s right Rom. I see you’re ever the crusader… heh, how nostalgic.
: …!
: Oi, are you kidding me?! Didn’t Rom wreck that guy?!
: He did. How can the black sheep of the Tenkuu Chuushin Ken School be here…?
: “Tenkuu Chuushin Ken”?! Then he’s…!
: He was the top disciple of Kirai Stoll, our master and father to Rom and Leina… but he turned to use the Tenkuu Chuushin Ken for evil and was ultimately beaten by Rom.
: So you’ve returned from the abyss of death just like Devil Saturn and Deondra, Bug?!
: Och, haud it richt thare! Ah tauld ye afore that Ah dinnae mind ever being gubbed by ye! Ah warn ye not tae lump is with Bug, ye bugger!
: What? Then Bug’s…!
: Hm; I really did lose to you back then. But my body and soul were restored by Sir Grujios – all so I could send you to the same Hell you sent me!
: So you’ve lost not only your pride and sense of justice but your very being to the Gyandolar?! In that case, I’ll once again tender your just deserts in my father’s stead!
: Weel, aren’t we excited th’day! Bit wot if Ah do this?!

: Aah!!
: Ragou’s…!
: !!
: It’s loose again!

: Oh, no!

: UWAAAAH!
: Hokuto! Ginga!
: D-drat it…!
: How is it so strong?!
: !!
: S-Stop! You guys can’t come out now!
: !!
: We’re dealing with the Ragou here! If we lose you guys, too…!
: Harry, what’s the status at GEAR HQ?!
: I-It looks like the corruption’s now spreading throughout all of the Unicorn and Leo!
: N-No!
: drat IT! We can’t let it end like this! Not now!
: We promised them that we’d get this data!
: And we still need to do something about that Mass Driver, too!
: So we’re not letting them beat us!

Location: GEAR HQ

*ALARM!*

: !!
: !!
: Leo! Unicorn!
: Th-The Virus is spreading more and more through their bodies! They’re going critical!
: What?!
: Run Pattern F from W138 onward! Hurry!
: We can’t, Eris! Our computers are already at full capacity!
: We can’t keep up…! drat it… And all our computers are…!

*Beep.*

: Huh? This code…!
: What is it?!
: We’re receiving an urgent transmission from NERV’s Prof. Ritsuko Akagi!
: From NERV?!

*Beep.*

: This is Ritsuko Akagi, head of NERV HQ’s science division. We’re sending you our MAGI’s defensive programs, as well as a viral self-termination program I developed.
: P-Prof. Akagi…
: This should buy you a bit of time… Prof. Inoue, you’ll need to open a decoy entry.
: U-Understood!
: But… are you sure about doing this?
: Yes – Cmdr. Ikari’s orders. Regardless, you should now be focusing on dealing with your virus as quickly as can be.
: Y-You’re right…! Inoue!
: Yes, sir! Opening circuit! Aiko, open a decoy entry – pattern R!
: Roger!

*Beep, beep, beep.*

: Wow…! The infected sectors went down by 13%...!
: Did it stop the Virus?!
: Yes… but it’s only for a little while…!
: We have to keep at it until Ginga and Hokuto come back, Eris, Leina!
: Yes, Professor!
: (Hokuto… Ginga… please…!)
: (Brother… everyone… come on!)

: (…! Leina…?!)
: (It’s alright. We not giving up here!)
: Vega! Only one thing we can do now: the usual!
: “The usual”?
: Brute force! Not very creative, I know, but them’s the breaks!
: I-I see what you mean… our only option is to attack until Ragou’s too weakn to fight back…!
: OK! All troops, focus all your attacks on the Ragou! But, remember, we still need to take its data so don’t destroy it!
: R-Roger!
: Hold on, Leo, Unicorn!
: We… We promise we’ll save you!

So now we need to reduce it below 10% HP. One thing to note (that the game doesn’t make too clear) is that, once you do, the mission will end… meaning, if you want the Gyandolar cash and exp, you’ll need to save that for last.
… I didn’t realize that until it was already done, though.

Oh, and there’s this too. The Gyandolar will make a beeline for whatever’s close and that’s likely to be the Dendoh.
I didn’t expect them to show up RIGHT THERE, so they’re not packing Iron Wall. And losing it is a game over. Gotta be very careful now.

: Ah, richt… Ah’ll tell ye something guid afore we ‘ave oor rammy!
: If ye want tae make some cash, then ye shuid deal with us first. (… I wasn’t looking when he said this…)
: We’ve no reason tae ‘elp pinheid anymair. Wance yer all in ‘Ell, we’re ‘eaded straecht back hame!

These lines were the catch-all lines for whatever Saturn attacks first. Since that was the Dendoh, he carries on to his actual convo with them:

: We’ve no time to fight with you!
: Watch it, laddie! Ignair a grown man ‘n’ ye’ll regrit it!
: Zip it! We don’t care about you today!

Lucky sumbitch…

Hey, Bug.

: This guy’s fighting style…!
: It’s the same as Rom’s!
: That’s right! I am Bug Newman, the greatest Tenkuu Chuushin Ken fighter in the universe!
: “Newman”? Are you related to Light?
: Or, if you’re “Bug”, does that mean you’re a RoBeast?
: Insolence! I’ll make sure you never open those cheeky mouths again!
: Hell, no! You know how much crap my mom would give me if I lost to some evil martial artist?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKX5SWcpD28
Only defending because I’m anticipating the other Gyandolar attacking them.

Indeed, all three Fenomenas and two Falgos also gang up on them. The Casmodons prefer to walk towards our folks.

Player Phase!

Y’all hosed up now.

: Hold on, Leo!
: You, too, Unicorn! We’re taking this thing down and then we’re coming to help you!

That’s all Falgos dead and some damage on Bug and Ragou.
Speaking of:

Iron Sand (Bug Newman)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L4
  • Support Attack L2
Bug’s Voice Actor: Yoku Shioya (other known works: Cosmo in Ideon, Will Zeppeli in Jojo, Bumblebee in 80’s Transformers and many more)

This guy’s pretty much Ashura, only with more Evasion and Range stats in exchange for lower everything else. His weaker attack, mind, carries the Stun debuff but, that aside, it's the same old thing.

While our folks close in on our targets, we clear out whatever’s close. Drill, Leina and Camille each take a Casmodon.

Puru Two does the same, learning Attune.

We’ll do some chip damage to Bug... though I failed to see that I needed to kill them first.

: Bug Newman! You’ve forgotten the teachings of Master Kirai and, now, I cut you down!
: Hmph… From where I stand, you’re still the same exact whelp you were back then!

: So… this man’s a Tenkuu Chushin Ken fighter?!
: I am! Think you can dodge my invincible fists?!
: Hah! Your evil fists won’t fly against me and the Daimos!

Bug’s defenses aren’t too good, either.

Enemy Phase!

Oh, you.

: Ye really joined up with the earthlings?! Yer jist as bad as us!
: Evil bonds are ephemeral things, built solely for mutual profits…
: However, the hearts of those who have justice within them are always united – even if their homeworld is different!

Easy. Rom then proceeds to weaken every Fenomena that thinks can land a hit on him (they can’t).
Bug wastes his time on a now Iron Wall’d Dendoh.

Player Phase!

Moving after Ragou now. Remember, if you’re playing this, get rid of the Gyandolar before you do this.

: This monster’s strong and agile in the extreme… Can we actually immobilize it?

: There was a man who fought even bears and water buffalos with just his karate…! So I will pin this thing down! (This is a reference to the manga Karate Master (空手バカ一代) which, in turn, was inspired by a real life karate fighter: Mas Oyama)

: Beast of death and destruction! My fists will end your evil and deliver my companion’s friends from their plight!

: Take care of the Leo and Unicorn, Leina! We’ll be coming back there with the vaccine handy!

I insist to show off the Dendoh’s Yuusha pose, even if the game won’t.

Oh, and the kill also teaches Ginga Fury. :getin:

: Alright!
: They did it, Captain! They really did it!
: Yes…!
: A very good job, you two.
: Heheh, all thanks to you guys!
: Yeah, if none of you were here, the Unicorn and Leo might’ve…
: Not at all; it was the strength hidden within you two and the Dendoh that beckoned the Beast Overlord. We were mere helpers in this.
: Naaah, that’s not true. Right, Hokuto?
: Right…!
: Alright, I’m hyped now! Let’s go and wreck that Mass Driver, too!
: Captain, what’s the status on Operation Moonraker?
: Already underway, though the Federation’s having difficulty. We’ve been ordered to join the fight immediately.
: Then we’ve no reason to be here any longer.
: Right. Operation “Go, Dendoh! Blow the Gulfer sky-high” is now finished. Nadesico and all troops, withdraw from this sector at full speed.

Items earned today were an Apogee Motor and Cartridge.

And here are the other battle convos we missed:

: Ah did some looking intae ye! Yer a pure ‘andsome lad, eh?
: Probem is, jist the sight of prettyboys makes me go aw peelie-wallie!
: Well, what a coincidence! The sight of villains like you gets me raring for a fight!

--

: I’ll show you once more how worthless justice truly is, Rom!
: Don’t make me laugh! The only thing you’ll do here is be sent back to where you belong, Bug Newman!

--

: I’ll never let you off the hook for using the Tenkuu Chuushin Ken for evil!
: Hmph… You may have grown larger but I see your brain is still that of a child!

--

: Oh? Leina’s here as well? Then I should head over to say hello.
: I will not allow it! You’ll get not even one of your dastardly fingers on her so long as I’m present!

--

: Bug Newman! You have besmirched the Tenkuu Chuushin Ken and I’ll beat you in my father’s place!
: Then answer me first: what did the “justice” preached by the Tenkuu Chuushin Ken ever give me?!
: That’s…!
: I use my strength for my sake alone! And I won’t hold back against anyone who tries to stop me!

Location: Giganos Empire

Dorchenov is going ballistic, yelling that they’re losing this conflict – they must use the Mass Driver. Guiltorre still isn’t budging, ordering some of the homeland’s outer defense platoons sent to the front lines. Dorchenov doesn’t appreciate his stubbornness and pulls a gun on the guy.
Guiltorre sniffs at his pathetic display but Dorchenov proclaims he has the resolve to do what is necessary. It seems the Marshal is incapable of leading them to victory, so… he pulls the trigger.
As Guiltorre falls, Dorchenov chuckles that, now, the Giganos will—

He’s interrupted when Maillot runs in, having heard the gunshot; he spots the gun in Dorchenov’s hand and, right after, the dying Guiltorre. His last words: “The Mass Driver mustn’t be used against Earth.”
Dorchenov’s initially taken aback by Maillot’s sudden arrival but quickly sees that this is perfect: “Guards! Marshal Guiltorre has been shot! Cpt. Plato shot him!”
Generic mooks start pouring in and Dorchenov commands them to arrest Maillot for the murder.

Before that happens, though, Maillot’s groupies run in guns blazing and open a path for him to escape. Gotta be quick, before even more troops come after them.
As they run, Dorchenov orders everyone to capture the Marshal’s killer.

You touch my burger, and I'll slap you so hard you won't even be able to understand how you fucked up.
I hope Devil Saturn 6 is aware that Rom could sue him for infringement. Also, Unicorn Drill and Leo Circle die and magically come back to life. The only reason I'm letting them get away with it and not, say, Kira, is because it's a Super Robot show and thus logic is meaningless.

Edit: Also, how blind are Dorchenov's mooks? They come in, seeing their boss has a literal smoking gun in his hand, seeing Maillot in shock and clearly not holding a literal smoking gun, and they think the guy who clearly didn't do the shooting is the guy who did the shooting. Please tell me it was handled better in Dragonar.

Well, I reckon Dorchenov could've simply thrown the smoking gun on the ground and get rid of it during the ensuing chaos. How good are Zeonic forensics?

To be fair, it was a moment of "Heroes lose precious friends and have hit a moment of weakness and sadness." situation, and was they were rewarded by seemingly tapping into the Phoenix Force to resurrect Leo and Unicorn. Let's hope neither Hokuto nor Ginga turn into Jean Grey anytime soon, however.

Even if the Phoenix Saga could be improved with Rom Stoll speeches.

Probably about as good as Nazi science.

It's not nearly as much of a bullshit resurrection in the show.

They were working on a pair of space battleships for a few episodes that we being hyped up as the new upgrades and direction the show was going to take. Right as Unicorn and Leo died, they atomized the ships and created new bodies for themselves out of the material. When you're watching it, it's much less deus ex machina and more of a crazy bait and switch.
