The tools of a hero mean nothing without a solid core.

I've got Rookies Variety as a mod so they get all sorts of crazy random clownsuits, but it hasn't been updated since 2016. I assume "change the RNG for creating rookies" isn't going to break in the new expansion or anything, but is there an updated mod that does this and any reason to switch?

Did they remove the thing where your troops would get scars sometimes when badly wounded? It happened a lot in my old playthroughs but I haven't seen it happen once since WoTC.

Does anyone actually use standard rifles anymore? The only reason I have in the last two campaigns after promotions is so my specialist can shoot more than one lost at a time one mission.

The mod itself says "This mod is working fine in WotC!" right in the description, as the comments do, so I guess it's alright.

So I absolutely loved XCOM (and the original UFO Defense) but for some reason managed to never get the hang of XCOM2 and quit after wiping like eight campaigns on the same day, and never made it more than two terror missions into the game. Is there a good tutorial series of general gameplay tips for the base campaign? WotC looks bananas but I definitely need to know all the regular content first.

I don't know. Does it add outfits? Some outfit mods cause crashes if they aren't updated: it looks like Spart's kitbashes is a goner because it can cause crashes but Spart doesn't have the ability to update it.

So I just used Interrupt on a reinforcement pod. They scattered, I tried to use Wrath and missed, and then they each got another full turn. It's my first time using Interrupt - is the whole abiltiy bugged, or is it something specific about reinforcement pods or something?

Play on a lower difficulty until you get the hang of it and move up. Easy or whatever is very, very simple even if you run in to poo poo on occasion, you'll always be able to recover. WotC is amazing but I have like 200hrs in vanilla XCOM2 + poo poo expansions. XCOM2 + WotC on higher difficulties is all about ruining your day with a dimming light of hope at the end of a long, poo poo infested tunnel.

It's pretty amazing. I have like 24 hrs in it and I bought WotC Friday after work.....

E: I didn't get a single engineer until after the first month and started on a continent with a Chosen (just happened to be Assassin, but I guess this is random) - is this the norm?

The weird thing isn't that they broke the feature, the weird thing is that they broke it around when Alien Hunters came out.

They specifically modified the code for the expansion pack (reusing the old shaken code and instead using it as a "did this unit already get a scar? check), yet they didn't seem to actually test whether scarring actually worked with the changes.

@hito

I have used Interrupt in my recent debug mission and Mox interrupted enemies on the map just fine, though it wasn't a reinforcement pod.

No new outfits, just changed the rolls for new rookies to include all the colors and greater chance of accessories and such.

Is anyone else having an issue where sometimes when you get into a mission someone on your squad suddenly has no armor or items? It has happened to me 3 times now, which when playing Ironman is kind of annoying because I suddenly have someone I have to baby because a single crit is going to kill them.

She was never this nuts, and repeatedly demonstrated concern for the lives and well beings of XCOM operatives in the first game.

I'm okay with the memes supplanting her original characterization but that IS what it is. It's super funny though and an alien occupation can change someone so hey whatever.

XCOM 2 doesn't really go that wild with it, beyond it being a poor life choice to do in the first place. The difference apparently is Vahlen didn't see why not to select the "Advanced Archon Missiles" research to do instead of what the Commander usually went for, which was probably some bullshit about a grappling hook. It sounds like she did a good job handling the XCOM remnants with her until the Viper King broke loose in a small earthquake.

Are the chosen static or random my first DLC game has me fighting an assassin that is immune to overwatch that is just killing my people 1 at a time then disappearing one of my remaining 3 dudes tries to spot them and I might get 1-2 shots off maybe if I'm not getting swarmed by the other stuff in the mission then the next one is dead I really am not sure I have the resources to deal with this so early in the game.

I think the assassin is scripted to be immune to overwatch. I've never seen or heard of it not having that.

Apparently if you have people on a covert op never hit the "remove utility items" button because they technically count as in the barracks and lose whatever you gave them, like medkits, vests, or scanners.
