It was a defeat, yes.

So that's C (Customs Union) D (Common Market) E (Confirmatory vote) G (Parliamentary Supremacy)

THUNDERDOME LOSER 2021
C: Customs Union - Ken Clark and Hilary Benn (cross party)

Ayes: 273 Noes:276

Instruct the government to make a permanent customs union with the EU as a minimum for any Withdrawal Agreement.

D: Common Market 2.0 - Nick Boles and Lucy Powell (cross party)

Ayes: 261 Noes: 282

Alter the Political Declaration to make it so that during the implementation of a Withdrawal Agreement we:

-Become part of EFTA.
-Become part of the EEA.
-Agree frictionless food trade with the EU.
-Agree a common tariff with the EU.
-Give the UK a say on future EU trade deals (?) until an agreement is made to keep frictionless trade with no hard land border in Ireland.

Make it so if the above were achieved the NI backstop in the Withdrawal Agreement would be overridden by this.

Instruct the government to bring in another Meaningful Vote™ conditional on the Political Declaration being altered as above and made legally binding.

E: Confirmatory Public Vote - Peter Kyle, Phil Wilson, Justine Greening et al (cross party)

Ayes:280 Noes: 292

No Withdrawal Agreement and framework without putting it to a public vote.

G: Parliamentary Supremacy - Joanna Cheery, Dominic Grieve, Vince Cable, Liz Saville Roberts, Sarah Wollaston (rainbow coalition)

Ayes:191 Noes: 292

(it's not as cool as it sounds)

If we haven't passed a Withdrawal Agreement by midday April 10th we must seek an extension from the EU council (EUCO).

If EUCO doesn't give an extension by midday April 12th we have a vote on No Deal.

If we don't approve No Deal in the vote then we revoke Article 50, and within three months of this hold an inquiry into whether any form of brexit acceptable to the EU is likely to also be acceptable to parliament.

If the inquiry finds there is a form of brexit acceptable to the EU and likely to be acceptable to parliament, then a referendum is held on whether to trigger Article 50 to pursue the form of brexit the inquiry has found.

Sorry, are these normal parliament-style votes ('Aye' and 'Nay' rooms for each one) or a sheet of paper with box-ticking like last week?

Do debates in the House of Commons change any MP's mind about anything, ever? Is it all just pointless, time-wasting posturing and they might as well just get straight on with the voting on issues?

Generally not, although as I said early, Lucy Powell persuaded Barry Gardiner in her impassioned speech in favour of the Common Market and put him from vote against to vote for.

this sort of debate is mostly for the public record

i'm sure that the odd vote is swayed here and there by sound argument, but for the most part their purpose is to make it known that those arguments have been made and considered for posterity

sometimes, like when benn forced a free vote on bombing syria, a good speech can also help build someone's stature or shore up support, but mostly it's meant to let everyone know what parliament was thinking, more or less

in less heavily whipped matters, the debate is much more important; if you're discussing a porn filter and someone comes up with a credible reason that it simply isn't going to work, that might push someone who might normally be in favour to abstain, for instance

So Ken Clark's option looks to be the one most likely to get a majority today, right? But if May agrees to it, the ERG have been threatening to VONC the government. Full on Tory collapse is on the cards today then?

Is it the exact same method of voting as last week, or do they have to indicate a preference for one option over another?

Someone needs to propose an EU 2.0 amendment, where we pay in £700m a week and get twice as many immigrants in return. The ERG benches would resemble the final scene from Kingsmen.

I think there's a very good chance of another VONC this week, potentially bringing down the government. If Clarke's customs union passes as you say the ERG are threatening to vote for one. If the CM2.0 passes then May has said she'll just ignore it and you'd assume that the soft Brexiteers/Remainers in the Tories would be sufficiently pissed off to back one.

The other nice thing about a referendum between confirming CM2 and just revoking the whole thing is that it does deliver on the actual Brexit vote, just in a concrete way that a lot of people probably won't support. Less chance of a betrayal!!! narrative if people just reject what's actually on offer

Like that's been the thing this whole time, May has been championing her deal and even no deal as WILL OF THE PEOPLE, but they're not - people just voted for a vague "leave", there was no plan for what that would or should even look like, different people have different reasons for supporting brexit but it was always an open-ended thing - you could just assume it would be the kind of brexit YOU want. The one thing No Deal has going for it is it kicks that can down the road again, you can just believe it'll all turn out the way you like, and I bet that's why it polls so well

yes i agree. i voted to leave the corrupt neoliberal etc etc but how we left was up to the politicians

Betrayal narrative taking hold among Brexiteers is inevitable, even if we do hard Brexit. Especially if we hard Brexit, people will say Brexit was betrayed rather than admit it was all a fantasy.
