So this is obviously morbid, but I find this kind of thing oddly interesting. I posted towards the end of August about the death of the (then) oldest living ex MLB player - Tom Jordan. His death left only 27 living ex players that had played in the 1940's.

Two more have since passed.

Charlie Silvera passed on September 7th. Not a lot to be said about him - he is known basically for one thing. Being Yogi Berra's backup. That, and collecting World Series rings and bonus checks. He was the last living player that was on all five of the Yankee's five straight championship teams from 49-53.

"New York Times" posted:

“I’m in the bullpen Hall of Fame,” he told The San Francisco Chronicle in 2008. “With those World Series checks, I didn’t have to work in the winter.”

Silvera’s 1956 salary was about $17,000 (the equivalent of about $163,000 today), but he tacked on nearly $9,000 as his final Series-winning share.

....

Silvera received his share of ribbing for being something of an October spectator, five times against the Dodgers, and one Series apiece versus the Philadelphia Phillies (1950) and the New York Giants (1951). But as he once told The Oakland Tribune, he was hardly offended.

“The opposition would call me ‘Jesse James, the payroll bandit.’ I’d tell them, ‘Go ahead and give it to me, but Yogi Berra tips me more than you make.’”

Wally Westlake passed away on September 6th. Not a lot to really say about him. Hit for the cycle twice, and was the last living member of the Indians' 1954 World Series team. Has a confusing name that makes a middle aged guy that grew up in Seattle think about the Sonics and Wally Walker.

So, 25 players from the 1940s remain. Not a lot of household names are on the list. Best career probably belongs to Curt Simmons. Eddie Robinson and Bobby Shantz both had decent careers as well. Older M's fans should remember the name Del Crandall. Hard to compare to the 30's and 20's where the last living player happened to be a hall of famer each time. And the last living player from the 1900s was Smokey Joe Wood - owner of an pretty drat interesting career. Kind surprised some version of the Veterans committee never inducted him over the years.

Walker might make it in just at the wire. The ballot glut from the last few years when even a medium hall guy could find 15 candidates worth considering is finally easing up and he was at 56% last year. He'd need a bigger jump than Edgar, but he might be able to pull it off since the rest of the ballot is a lot weaker.

I mean, I'm a pretty big hall guy and the only other locks beside Walker on my (imaginary) ballot would be Clemens, Bonds, Schilling, Manny, Rolen, and Jeter. After that guys like Kent, Helton, Sheffield, Pettitte, Sosa, Abreu, and Jones all deserve consideration, but I don't think many voters would put them ahead of Walker. Plenty will put Visquel, but I'm pretty sure that's just because of brain worms.

And then there's the issue that, if you're one of the 40% of voters who apparently refuse to let anyone with any steroid taint in, you can't vote for six of those guys and are left with a potential ballot of just Jetes and Vizquel.

Ugh. We're going to have multiple just Jetes and Vizquel ballots, aren't we?

I think having sportswriters vote on the Hall is bad because they're the most self-righteous, preening people on the planet with a genetic predisposition to hot rear end takes, but idk what a better solution is. Players? A commission?

The writers aren’t perfect but from every example we’ve seen thus far they’re miles better than the players or commissions the HoF has put together.

In general players are terrible judges of talent, player vote/surveys every year demonstrate this

Sportswriters are just the first step. There's a whole bunch of committees to look at potentially overlooked players. But they can have their own problems, the Frisch veterans committee is singlehandedly responsible for most of the worst picks for HOF because Frisch kept picking his friends and ignoring otherwise worthy candidates.

The BBWAA has gotten a lot better about their standards for voters. Voters don't get to keep voting if they've stopped covering baseball or haven't submitted ballots over the past, which purged a lot of the worst jerks. That's led to ballots averaging about 8 picks since 2014... which was when no one got in and helped cause the gigantic fuckin' logjam that's hurt candidates like Walker and Edgar.

That, plus the people who won't vote for steroid users, have been the main issue. I wish they hadn't gone to a 10 year window instead of a 15 year window, though.

I have to admit, I am so relieved that Mariano was unanimous because thank loving lord we won't have to hear about how St. Jetes is the first unanimous electee or how he was screwed by evildoers seeking to sully his reputation.

I was looking at the HOF numbers while writing my last post, and man I'd forgotten how few sportswriter inductions there had been prior to about 2014. There's been 20 players elected by the writers in the last six years. There were only 20 players elected in the thirteen years prior to that. And there were some pretty big misses in that period! Luis Tiant! Lou Whittaker off after only one year! Kevin Brown off after one year! Dwight Evans!! Alan Trammell!!!

(I love arguing about the HOF. I have an idle dream of some day buying some land in Cooperstown to create a "Garden of Very Good" with sculptures of real drat good but not quite HOF level players. Like your Robin Venturas, Luis Gonzalezs, and Brets Saberhagen.)
