like, that's pretty much gonna be the entirety of the Berserk fandom right there: it's a fandom with a very very comically high bar for "too hosed up to read" and like 30 years of goodwill built up towards the guy who's doing it.

(because Berserk is weirdly loving good for how bonkers hosed up it gets, to the extent that i'd literally, unironically call it a contender for the greatest comic ever drawn. it's basically a 40-volume-and-counting death metal album cover about the angriest motherfucker of all time using a sword the size of a tree to turn hordes of demons and people into splats of red goo, and it's also a gorgeously-drawn exploration of the human condition following a guy struggling desperately to maintain his humanity in the face of overwhelming trauma and violence, and the fact that it manages to successfully achieve both of these things at once will always be absolutely loving incredible to me. if you can handle all the grody poo poo in it, it is absolutely worth a read, even if this other poo poo Miura's doing is gross.)

If a comic causes you to become tolerant of the sexualization of kids then you should not be reading it.

it didn't  i'm actively avoiding the other thing Miura is doing because it sounds really bad and his non-Berserk stuff honestly just kind of generally sucks. i'm just also very very unsurprised that the fandom is reacting the way they are.

it's like if you went into a Stephen King thread to gripe about the child sewer orgy from IT; you're gonna get a mix of "yeah that's gross but it's a good book otherwise" and people just full-throatedly defending it. you're not really gonna get anyone going "yeah gently caress Stephen King he's a gross sex weird" even if that's frankly probably the right opinion. you're definitely not gonna get anyone throwing their copies of The Shining in the trash because a completely different book has a child orgy in it.

(for the record, just so everyone's following what's going on, the gross poo poo that sparked all of this isn't actually in Berserk. it's in a completely different manga by the same author. Berserk has a lot of gross sex, but it's the Hellraiser kind of gross sex, not the... IT child-sewer-orgy kind.)

actually, it rules, and i am sorry you cannot appreciate cool and good things. you're also ignoring the part that actually makes it a GOAT candidate; if you take out the actual depth, you get Goblin Slayer, which sucks balls on every possible level. what separates Berserk from that is the fact that it's a legit incredibly well-written story. it's one of the most incredibly loving metal things ever drawn, and to not mention that would be ridiculous, it's arguably the main surface appeal of Berserk, but there is legitimately a loving lot going on underneath that surface, or, well, we wouldn't get this situation, where people are so passionate about it that they're full-throatedly defending naked children in an almost totally unrelated series, and I'm jumping into the lion's den to be like "actually Berserk is pretty loving amazing regardless of all this poo poo and y'all shouldn't take this as a measure of its quality."

Honestly, it's weird that Stephen King gets a big pass for the amount of hosed up poo poo he's written, that I assume is related to working through some massive childhood trauma or something. I kinda soured on reading his stuff once I stepped back and realized how messed up some of it is, it's not really a big endorsement that a lot of people ignore that.

but i mean, you get it in that case, too, right? like, if people like a dude's work, they're generally gonna be more inclined to look over the bad poo poo, and you're not generally gonna get people joining in on roasting the dude if you're specifically going into a place populated by fans of that dude, even if they should be joining in.

for the record, i agree, i'm not a King fan and that's basically why. i like movies of his work specifically because they always remove the weird sex poo poo.

He started out writing a decent crime fiction series but by the third book he decided "ugggh regular criminals it's aliens from the internet for this one!" so he's also a garbage writer besides all the up-fuckedry.

This is clearly stating that the people who tolerated the existence and discussion of the child sexualizing comic did so because the creator’s other work, Berserk, had primed them to do so.

Look I think there's fair arguments to be made from both sides of the aisle here but I think at the end of the day you have to ask yourself what separates anime from other types of media that it necessitates its own particular subforum. And, look, I think if you're honest with yourself you'd have to say it comes down to two factors. 1: That's it's made in Japan and 2: That it's chock full of loving pedo poo poo.

yeah, you're misreading me a little. the problem isn't specifically Berserk; it's a general issue with people who create some things that are very good, and some things that should not exist or be discussed. it is also not some magical crack-ping brain-breaking that occurs when you enjoy the good thing that person made; it is a result of being primed to like that person's works by their other thing being good, and as a result of this, not thinking critically about the possibility that the new thing is bad and should not exist or be discussed.

by being aware of this problem, you can avoid it fairly easily; my first statement was noting that I'm not having this happen, because you seemed like you were accusing me of it.

i 100% fully agree with this- if it weren't for the bulk of anime and manga being awful, and the bulk of anime and manga fans being awful, it would probably fit in BSS/TVIV/CD just fine (and, frankly, the stuff that isn't poo poo tends to get discussed there anyways, if not as heavily). however, a lot of why i have historically liked ADTRW is because it was typically very intolerant of pedo anime and manga, and having a space to discuss it without 4chan poo poo dominating the conversation was nice (and will be nice again soon, hopefully).

Stephen King is actually a very good author, and, at his best, completely untouchable in his space. The problem is he should have stopped writing novels 25 years ago. Let him stick to short fiction from now on.

Stephen King should have kept directing movies during that period where he was constantly high and/or drunk. Maximum Overdrive is not a good movie by any definition of the word but it only could have been made by a crazy man.

Dark Tower started weird and just got weirder. Remember the campfire where Roland falls asleep and Rip Van Winkles into a 1000 year difference? With his mortal enemy a pile of bone and ash?

Wizard and Glass is pretty much the turning point for me. Just the right amount of western coming of age with random "yes it's the Wizard of Oz" at the end to throw me.

Sometimes I pretend Wolves of the Calla was the last one and he's still working up a good script for a followup because Song of Suzannah was just.... eeegghhhh.

King's at his best when the goofy supernatural stuff is just sheen on his social critiques. Like Carrie. Second best are the shorts that end just right and give you enough leeway to fill the blanks in. Like The Jaunt. Honorable mention for the weird poo poo that sticks in your head for days like the Boogeyman story or I Am the Doorway.
