One big factor is that the ORtg is increasing across the entire league. The four highest league average ORtgs have occurred in the last four seasons. The 2002 and 2004 Mavericks had a higher Relative ORtg than this 2020 team.

Also, it will drop more as we're not halfway through the season yet.

In the opening weeks it was odd when a plethora of articles came out touting the 2020 Mavericks as the greatest offense of all-time when they'd played fewer than ten games. That's barely any at all.

He's very selective on his long range shots, shooting most of his shots wide open. He's much worse with even a little bit of pressure, but he doesn't take many of those. Most rookies have problems with shot selection, especially when they are featured as much as Ja is, so credit to him to figure that out so quick.

He probably won't get many more wide open looks than he gets right now, so his path to scoring more from 3 will be getting better when he has a little less space and feeling better about taking more of those. That's pretty normal though. He honestly might see his 3p% go down as he gets better.

Edit: He's shooting 2.5x more wide-open shots than "open", and none with tight defense, according to stats.nba.com (which isn't perfect but its probably generally right here). 1.7 wide-open attempts per game is pretty "normal" for guards like him, I think, so I don't think you're going to suddenly get a ton more of those. His 3P% would be worse if he took more of those 25%-rate "Open" shots, which is what most rookies would be doing.
