Is it just me or is Old World Blues the worst DLC? The Main Quest and all of the side quests are just fetch quests, and the environment is so.. bland. Why did people think this was the best DLC back in 2011?

Old World Blues was the only DLC I enjoyed. Something about its structure is satisfying to me -- unlockable features for The Sink creates incentives to explore each point of interest.

Old World Blues has a bunch of fun characters and little vignettes with excellent theming, and at no point does it entirely swap out mechanics on you without telling you about it. It's fun. It even has a nice ending instead of offhandedly implying that the Mojave will soon be attacked by a threat that it couldn't possibly withstand and there's nothing you can do about it, but since it's a more open-world challenge instead of a long corridor, you can choose what and how much of the content you want to engage with.

Lonesome Road kinda lives or dies on how you like UIysses, but I don't think in the moment to moment gameplay really reinforces anything about his monologues. He's lecturing to you about politics and history while you're fighting moles and zombies. With Old World Blues, everything you see and do will reinforce all the mad science stuff that you get in the conversations and logs.

In my opinion, every New Vegas DLC is worse than the main game. I feel the opposite way about most Fallout 3 DLC.

I like all the DLCs so can't rank them. But Lonesome Road is the only one I've only played fully once. Because you can come and go I've ventured in, mostly as low-level characters right out of Goodsprings, but back out after getting some good loot, it gets hard pretty early on though I think it's possible to do at level 5 or whatever.

I love Dead Money like my very own child so I guess that's my favourite one

I know that Josh has said that the plan was to include gameplay after the ending, but I think that having a definitive ending makes for a better narrative. It makes those ending slides way more impactful.
Edit: I also love how the game manages to do a great job making the Courier into a mythical character. Much better than in games like Skyrim.

My unnecessary DLC Opinions:

Dead Money: every time I play this one I bitch about it but I keep complaining because I keep doing it. I just love Christine's character, I love heists, I love shooting Dean Domino in his smug loving face, and I love trading my Sierra Madre chips for enough sniper rounds to depopulatethe Mojave.

Honest Hearts: Zion is beautiful and I could just... listen to Joshua Graham talk forever. And watch him reload guns forever. And wear his armour forever. And shoot his guns forever. I just kinda want to hang out and talk to everyone in the canyon forever, Follows-Chalk and Walking Cloud too. Honestly I generally go into this one naked because between looting the White Legs, looting the wildlife, looting the Survivalist caches, and looting the post-DLC gift box, I probably need to make two trips to bring it all home. Also the Survivalist's story is great. Daniel

Old World Blues: Do you KNOW how much I love wacky science? DO YOU? I got in an argument with my own brain! I'm sure I would be unbearably horrified at the grotesque magnitude of the Think Tanks' crimes if I weren't too busy giggling at Muggy. Also the player base is great, I've got my own little garden and there's so many ways to get more use out of assorted junk and the Lucky 38 is so dusty and gloomy. Too many Roboscorpions. You can find so many Mentats that my character is probably still high.

Lonesome Road: I'm not interested in whatever Ulysses is talking about, and I found ED-E cloying instead of endearing. I also didn't enjoy exploding all the time. So if you're not into those three things LR probably isn't going to be a good fit.

I certainly liked OWB the most at the time and it's been long enough since I last played that I still get a lot out of the jokes on my current playthrough. But at this point I like Dead Money the most. Characters are fun, the Madre is a fantastic setting, and I like the challenge.

I do like the way Honest Hearts works with religion for its characters, seems like something that gets overlooked in the series far too much.

If we're sharing opinions on the dlc then I'll say.

Dead money. Has some of my favorite story moments of any fallout game, everything with vera,dean and the owner whose name I forgot is fantastic. Not being able to tell veronica about Christine less so but I still enjoyed her character. And having such an unrepentent rear end in a top hat like dean working with you is interesting, especially since it avoids the common dialogue traps in the game. Goddog is less interesting solving someone's split personality by talking at them good enough is kinda dumb and gamey. Mechanically the ghost people are a fun twist on the common enemy and add some much needed variety to the combat after a couple hundred hours in the mojave. I also had zero problem with the radios or traps. No idea why people think you need lightstep. The holograms are dumb though. I don't like what it does to the lore that they're was these unlikable hardlight lads existing only to provide security for a casino, same with the matter replicators. Loot wise it's got a good mix of weapons for every playstyle. Solid 9/10 dlc

Honest hearts. I really love Daniel and Joshua. For all the poo poo I give the vo in the base game I think they killed it with the main characters in the dlcs. I also love the overt themes of religion and forgiveness. It's something games don't often talk about but something I find personally interesting. Im not crazy about the survivalist story though it's kinda ehhh and I hate tracking down his caches. The whole conflict is also pretty meh. It really feels like a sideshow, I'll give em props though for letting you just say "gently caress you and gently caress this" and just getting outta dodge. Gameplay wise it's really really meh. You can tell they were running outta time. The main quest is an extremely boring series of fetch quests, and besides my boy follows chalk the minor charcoals were incredibly forgettable. I personally don't believe any of you people actually remebered walking clouds name without looking it up. Loot wise it's got some great small guns and melee weapons, but I don't remember finding anything that great on an energy weapons playthrough. Having a thompson and a light shining in darkness makes up for it though.

OWB. I loved it the first time I played, but every playthrough afterwards has been a chore. Fallout rides a real fine line between goofy and affecting and OWB pushes way too hard into goofy, just like fallout 2 it becomes extremely hard to take anything seriously. Which might actually be a good thing because big Mt is where you shoulda sent the nuke from lonesome road. There's absolutely nothing good that's come outta that place in centuries, and all the "people" left there have pretty much earned an ignoble death. Loot wise it's great for energy weapons characters but eh, I try and avoid going there the gameplay is just too boring and fetchquesty for what you get.

Lonesome road. The first time I played I listened with rapt attention to every word ulysses said. They built him up so much I really thought he was gonna come and smash me with some real truth bombs, well in retrospect he's certainly interesting, but more so in the sense that he's a dude whose been totally broken by the wasteland. Clinging to his one-sided rivalry with the courier because it's the only thing he's got left. His appearance in the biker with the ICBM draped with the flag is extremely good and evocative though, not something I woulda thought they could've pulled off in gamebryo. Gameplay wise I actually love lonesome road. From the get go you enter a bunker that's tilted, it seems small but all the areas at strange angles and the added verticality make the same gameplay loop you've been doing for dozens of hours fresh and interesting. It's also sort of challenging which is pretty nice after how easy the main game gets after you hit the strip. It's also got some really fun weapons and gimmicks to add to the gameplay. Ed-es deal I could leave. Ed-e in the main game is one of two good companions because he doesn't loving talk, his upgrades also make him sort of OP with being able to access the benches everywhere. Having two bonus dungeons is also nice, being able to access then only by nuking people makes sense story wise but kinda sucks if you wanna have as much gameplay and content as possible but also aren't a monster who nukes people for fun.

So in the end dead money>lonesome road>honest hearts> OWB

It probably says something that OWB is the only dlc.i haven't thought about doing since I started my newest playthrough.

On a first run OWB was probably far and away my favorite because of the writing but after repeat runs that would have to go to Dead Money. Now that I've seen all the jokes and everything in OWB has the spawning damage sponge enemies take up a greater proportion of my time which really hurts the fun overall. Dead Money, on the other hand, still has an amazing atmosphere and having a better idea of where those goddamned loving radios are does take some of the edge off that mechanic.

While I always liked Joshua Graham, I honestly don't remember that much about Honest Hearts except that I popped Follows-Chalk in the head as soon as I saw him and had to reload my game, and the fact that I kept getting kinda lost because I'm terrible at navigating the verticality of the place. I probably should go back and give Honest Hearts a fair chance; despite all the time I've spent in New Vegas it's the DLC I've done the least by far.

I wonder if there is anyone who did not have to reload after shooting Follows-Chalk right in the face. Having a vital character shoot at you during the initial ambush was not the best move there.

Also if you guys want a pretty bad overview of the dlcs check out this lad on youtube called the salt factory. His NV dlc overview autoplayed while I was installing mods, he missed the point of near everything. Highlights include being dissapointed Joshua wasn't a total badass who was coming to kill caeser, him not understanding why Daniel didn't wanna genocide the white legs, and seriously wondering why Elijah was so obsessed with the vault and why he didn't just leave.

Eh, I liked Salt Factory's retrospectives. He's not coming at the games from the point of a huge fan, but rather as something he played before and he wants to re examine it. He's easy listening and I enjoyed his New Vegas videos.

The reception at the time of release so that more games would try following in its footsteps sooner.

And maybe the devs would've gotten that bonus.

I like the game, loved it, didn't manage to finish a second playthrough, don't really have room on my laptop to keep it installed (altho part of that is that I got greedy with mods), but I'd like to see more games with a similar feel.

Definitely the Legion content and more of Arizona.

I was thinking also making Freeside and West New Vegas more like New Reno from Fallout 2, but there are mods that do that well.

I think making the companion quests easier to trigger would be good. I never saw most of the quests until I looked up a guide on how to do it, despite playing for hundreds of hours. For instance, Boone's quest requires you to complete particular anti-Legion quests and talk to a couple specific NCR members about Bitter Springs. It would better if killing named Legion members counted to earn his trust, and meeting the Great Khans could also prompt conversation about Bitter Springs.

I'm not sure I've actually ever triggered all of Raul's quest since I usually pick him up kind of late / don't use him as much as the others and iirc he requires something like being present the first time you visit his certain places (that or sometimes the triggers never fire off regardless)

Yeah, his quest breaks if you talk to Ranger Andy in Novac before recruiting Raul. And you might have to save before that conversation because it might not trigger anyway.

Do it on a hardcore run, it will make you appreciate Zion a lot more.

I don't think I ever did. I've always hunkered down on the starting side and picked off White Legs at range, so I was never close enough to Follows-Chalk to see him, let alone target him.
