Anywhosits... Is there a preference for a blade shape in your knife? The Boker Kalishnakov I'm using now has a tanto shape blade to it, which I find perfect for opening boxes/packages. This is handy given I'm opening a dozen plus shipments a day at work right now. However its a pain to sharpen with the sharpener I have right now due to that shape, especially where the angle of the blade changes towards the tip. Replacement candidates are bowie, harpoon or basic drop point shapes. I feel like bowie is my best option to have a nice thinner tip for doing fine pointy tip things, followed by your basic drop point and then the harpoon is just because I am terrible and like gimmicky blade shapes. A reverse tanto/wharncliffe would be very up my alley, but they're currently sold out or $15-20 more than the site I bought my current knife from. Elmnt80 posted:Anywhosits... Personally, I don't like tantos. They're designed to be strong for stabbing, and that's all. Which is not most of what I use a knife for. As a tradeoff, they have that awkward blade shape that makes slicing more awkward, since there's that inflection point near the tip. I think a normal drop point is pretty useful, since it has a fairly fine tip without being fragile, a useful length of straight blade for cutting things like rope, and a curved belly for starting a slice. I guess there's a reason it's the default blade shape. Sheepsfoot maximizes the straight cutting edge, as long as you don't need to start the cut by poking. If you don't, it might be worth the tradeoff. It does look slick, too. The Leek is a modified wharncliffe, so it has a lot of the benefits of a drop point without the usual downsides of a sheepsfoot. Lots of options out there! I'm not familiar with harpoon as a blade shape; it looks like a drop point that keeps going and raises part of the spine? I guess that's one way of getting a bigger blade on a knife that is overall smaller.

Elmnt80 posted:Is there a preference for a blade shape in your knife? Sheepsfoot or wharncliffe, because they're the most useful for general utility tasks. Plus they also look less "stabby", which is good for not freaking people out. The QSP Penguin is a solid choice in this blade shape. I also very much like my Otter anchor knife, because it looks like a proper tool a grandpa would use. But really any blade shape will work for most things. I keep one of these on my key chain so I never even notice it. Got it on Amazon for something like $5 years ago and ended up being super handy. Don't use it every day, but certainly use it every week at least once.

I kept an Opinel no. 9 in my desk at work at my last job (now on my desk at home), and my go-to utility knife around the house is one of those Mora chisel knives. I've got a handful of Mora knives, mostly because they're cheap and readily available. My favorite is a Bauhaus branded one that I picked up in Hamburg.

I've heard a lot of the cheap fitness trackers have ~issues~ if you sleep days/work nights. Reviews look like they're positive tho, it may be time to replace my aging/can't pass a charging cable anymore Fitbit Charge 2.

I can’t speak with authority but it seems Impressive detailed data from the sleep in the app (she’s a great sleeper, very jealous)! I’d definitely give one a chance for $20, a newer band 5 is out for $30-35 but the 4 was just $20 on Amazon and I am seriously impressed.

My 18 year old son came down this morning and wanted to surprise us for dinner. My wife and I thought "Oh, is he going to cook for us?" Nope. The youtube culture kid wanted us to get Mr Beast Burgers. Seems that the youtuber went live with a bunch of quasi-ghost restaurants serving smash burgers and fries. Interesting concept, wasn't bad. I did feel dirty for supporting Mr beast, though.

I lost my benchmade mini-grip and so I've been using a NRA knife (for real lol). Despite being a lovely Chinese pocket knife with the NRA logo on it, it's actually a lot more useful than you would think. And the blade locks!

Pan seared a strip steak in a cast iron pan at surface of the sun temperature for the first time in.... too long. Basically nothing but a bit of lard in the pan and seasoned the steak with some generous coarse salt and pepper. Seared about 4 minutes a side. Smoke was produced but nothing the range hood could keep up with. Next, threw in some veggies from my stir fries which needed to get used up. Some few day old fresh mushrooms, onion, green onions, and a yellow pepper that was going to the other side of the best before date. Seasoned the veg with just a bit of cayenne and garlic powder. Seared them in the same pan for about 1 minute. Served on top of some plain white rice (leftovers from stir fry) with the bit of seared juices drizzled over top. Man, it was better than it had any right being.

I spent a lot of time on boats and a prudent sailor always has a knife on them. Sheepsfoot blade is preferred so you don’t stab yourself while getting tossed about by waves, and a marlinspike is handy for prying stubborn knots apart. I also prefer a serrated blade so I can cut through a line in a hurry if I need to. I bought one of these Boye knives a few years ago and it has held up extremely well.

Work year 2020 officially over for me. About the best I can say is I survived it. Christ what a Llama of a year Honestly do not want another work year where I could easily top anyone else's work story with the electrocuted Llama and that's not even top five for me. Someone busted pants down in a closet with a objecting chicken wasnt even the top WTF work thing either. There's been so much crazy I dont remember even a 1/8th of it (A branch in PNG had no power and the cause was a rather dead person in the electrical cabinet who touched live power while doing autoerotic asphixiation might be the top WTF? this year) (Doesnt top the PNG IT support guy who was murdered in a witch doctor ritual) (I wish I was making that last one up)
