I'm not going to say that every single artist you've ever heard of is a total freak, but there's like a 1 in 3 chance they will end a short discussion about what is happening in their comic with "But what I'm really passionate about is drawing Velma sitting on cakes.".

Disney animators famously kept pinups of Ariel with her seashells off in their cubicles but it's not like they included those as extras in the 30th anniversary blu-ray. Ald is basically War Crimes: The Country so in retrospect it's not surprising that a country accustomed to using child soldiers would be rampant with CSA* but it's the sort of thing a) you'd hope would be kept to subtext, or failing that, b) you'd hope one of the protagonists of the comic would have been above, or failing that, c) it would be an important reveal, as well as being entirely consistent with the recent developments explicitly displaying that character's many damaging flaws), or failing all that, that at least d) the artist themself wouldn't basically give it a positive endorsement *CSA = child sexual abuse usenet celeb 1992 fucked around with this message at 03:02 on Oct 3, 2022 |

"All characters in this extremely questionable manga are definitely over 18, we swear" In all seriousness I'm not asking for anyone's long-form birth certificates here but even leaving aside the question of age the power/authority imbalance is still a real thing. Edit: Not to mention unexplored issues of maturity and consent in a fantasy world with vastly different life spans usenet celeb 1992 fucked around with this message at 03:21 on Oct 3, 2022 |

Jon being 18 is something Cope said in her formspring years ago back when he first showed up and people asked, since he was very much older looking than the rest of the plat squad. Duane had just been kicked out of the academy so he was 19-20 during the chapter. She also mentioned that Jon had a thing for Duane that he never noticed and which would've been entirely one-sided either way, since he's maybe her straightest character. All too happy to indulge the fantasies of her readers (that fork out the commission dosh) to see Jon get his wish, though.

I thought the author did the porny commissions with her characters as a side gig? And I also recall Jon being referenced as an 18 year old. Didn't realize Duane was only 19-20 in that chapter, tho.

Cope has explicitly said there would be a HELL of a lot more on screen penises if she didn't have to think about publishing print copies, so yeah not surprising at all she'd be up for it for patreonbucks.

usenet celeb 1992 posted:"All characters in this extremely questionable manga are definitely over 18, we swear" well i mean jon is a plat so if anything he's farther along in his life, by extension its ROGER FOI HELLICK's relationship with Mallory that's sketchy. and when he gets etalarched Mallory explicitly uses that to hurt him, she's clearly aware of all this in her side smut Cope fortunately does seem to draw a hard line re kids, but certainly not re power imbalances - there's a really rather good canonical side story about Bastion banging a female efheby and nearly getting et due to him being under the influence and her being very large, and a very not canonical sketch (...for now?) of Bastion getting the Full Ruckmearkha Goatse James Bond fucked around with this message at 22:48 on Oct 3, 2022 |

not liking alderode a whole lot rn and yeah, the Blacktongues are about to do something hideous to Grenzlan / Alderode, and the most obvious breach to use is ssaelits vs gefendur

although maybe it's not the ssaelits who get owned in that case - the soud get to maintain their faculties and the ssaelit presence there is heavily soud maybe instead we get to see mikaila dispassionately vaporize a couple dozen screaming lunatics, just in case the bit where she was overjoyed to bomb uaid didn't get things across

Yeah, that's a pretty good trick, lol. Ash said it's one Lemuel can only use sparingly and typically only once on a person, because they might figure it out afterwards and if he isn't careful and catch them in the right frame of mind, they could get mad at Lem about it once they come to their senses.

It is crazy how potent that hate is. Holy cow. Even when the ruling class is using the dammakhert in a way that effectively serves them, like…that is too crazy. I thought it would just make them, like, spit on the ground at hearing his name. They’re acting like dogs that just heard a cat meow!

forget ssaelit vs gefendur, just having the dammakhert broadcast his name on loop would keep the entire country too frothing mad to function

Seems intentional - Lemuel looks about to pry Mikaila away from the situation, and the panels shift in tone and style alongside his attempt.

And it's a tonal shift caused by the mass brainwashing of nearly an entire country.

Lemuel also masks his massive untreated psychological trauma with flippancy and humor and has ever since he was a child soldier, so this is perfectly in keeping with that. I bet on Monday we're going to get some real words between him and Mikaila.

I'm nearly certain it's also reminding us of how bloody psycho etarlarche-affected alds are and setting up whatever the Queen and the Blacktongues are about to do. It's classic: plan is set in motion, cut to unsuspecting victims, build tension with said unsuspecting victims going about their (horrible) daily lives, maybe having conversations with plot secrets about to be revealed only to be interrupted by BOOM, execute order 66.

Why hasn't anyone used pymaric illusions of etalarche cursed individuals to sow discord amongst the Aldish army? Even if the soldiers can recognize that they're being exploited, having them constantly complain about Roger Foi-Hellick distracts them and maybe units will overextend because that might be the real Roger Foi-Hellick.

It seems likely that desensitization is a thing, so while it's probably a good tool to have in your back pocket, you wouldn't want to to use it unless it was needed (same way Lemuel doesn't pull the prank on the same people twice).

A.o.D. posted:I think that might not be true. I think that the curse might be so powerful that when it's triggered, it's always at 100% no matter what. Yeah it's obviously super strong, but from what I said and GreyjoyBastard reiterated, Lem not pulling that admittedly hilarious trick out on a whim was something the author said on the Ask/Tell Tumblr. I think you are also correct that it's going to spark that insta-hatred, but it's doing it at the right time or set of circumstances so that soon after the rage wears off the conned individuals don't get super pissed off at Lem or whoever for messing with them, or if that is going to happen, at least making sure it was worth it given the situation. Trying to simultaneously save his niece/daughter and copilot from a situation that was looking to go from bad to worse with a bunch of quarreling soldiers looking to scrap using that drop of a hat trick is probably worth whatever blowback he might get later in Lem's mind, especially if he pulls rank and goes "you guys were being idiots and I saved you all from a night in military jail or worse" later. Edit: I mean we probably won't actually see any of that in comic because it's not that necessary to show unless it leads somewhere else, even if it's just a one-off joke, but it seems like the logical conclusion even if it happens offscreen. Just another of those neat little lore side things because there's so much thought out side stuff in the comic. Twenty Four fucked around with this message at 15:59 on Oct 9, 2022 |

If it's really that potent then the Blacktongues are wasting their effort, they could just bombard Alderode with flyers of Roger Foi-Hellick and watch them devolve into impotent rage. I don't necessarily think it's an issue of becoming desensitized to Foi-Hellick himself, but I don't think the curse makes them crazy enough that someone with their wits about them wouldn't be smart enough to reason that Roger Foi-Hellick is not realistically nicking biscuits from an Aldish army canteen. edit: like if one of the Adelier boys tried to pull that trick on Captain Claggart at the end of The Brothers Adelier, I suspect Claggart would have laughed and given them KP duty or whatever the equivalent punishment is. the holy poopacy fucked around with this message at 16:17 on Oct 9, 2022 |
