WhiteHowler posted:The Luxor is depressing whether you compare it to newer luxury hotels or not. Excalibur has to be worst of the worse but I didn't think Luxor looked too bad? I gather there have been recent room updates, and I liked the Titanic exhibit they ran last year. Got to jump to TI's defense though it might not be the most flash but I think it's a good option if you want to be on the strip but not quite spend what you will at the mid-Strip locations, and it's not so strongly themed as when it was built. Rio didn't seem to be in great shape when I wandered around last year (after seeing Penn and Teller) with some closed attractions and empty space. I gather they are refurbishing with the hotel becoming a Hyatt pretty soon, but I don't know if that means any work will be done to the casino/resort.

We're visiting Vegas at the end of this month and I like the idea of staying downtown, maybe at the Golden Nugget, because of price and also because even though I've visited Vegas many times, I've never actually been over there that I can remember. I'd just like to know what the situation for traveling to the Strip is. Are the buses okay, or are we better off getting an Uber or something? Or if downtown is not recommended, then ideas for a decent hotel on the strip not too far north of $100 a night.

you're better off using taxis since most of them have gone flat rate. if you're looking at cheaper options on the strip, TI and Linq are usually some of the more affordable ones. Also consider Circa if you're gonna stay downtown, its easily the best one in the area for your dollar.

I guess Linq seems... Millenial to me? Can't beat the location for the price though. Everyone seems to think TI is ripe for demolition.

I stayed at Linq recently and recommend. Rooms were fine enough, price is right, floor is kinda whatever but as noted the location is great and you can go anywhere else to play if that's your jam. It's right next to a pedestrian side street with a lot of places to eat too, including In-N-Out if you're a burger partisan. Next time I'm in Vegas I intend to stay at Linq.

Gabriel Grub posted:I guess Linq seems... Millenial to me? Kind of, I guess. That's just Vegas businesses adjusting to their expected clientele. Vdara, Aria, Linq, they all seem to be going for a bit of an Apple Store aesthetic? I try not to worry about the people walking around, because it's easy to ignore/avoid most of them. For example, The Cosmopolitan seems to cater to trust fund kids, techbros, and trendy people I generally wouldn't want to hang around. That turned me off initially. But damned if it's not a great hotel with a decent location and amazing restaurants, and it has become my favorite hotel on the Strip.

Attempted to reserve suites at Linq but website reservation failed twice. They say I canceled two reservations and have charged me $115 which I am supposed to get back in 7-10 business days. So Linq is out. Not trying that website again. I guess that means anything booked through Caesar's is not going to be an option. Edit: at least they have my email now, so I get to be reminded in perpetuity via spam of this incident. Lol I was also looking at Harrah's and Bally's but those are Caesar's too. So I guess someone's gonna have to explain why Sahara is so bad because it's my last option in my price range on the Strip. Gabriel Grub fucked around with this message at 03:54 on Dec 7, 2022 |

Business is supposedly starting to recede so maybe things will get priced better soon. Vegas has been kind of in a post-pandemic holding pattern for a while. Resorts World opened with a bit of a thud, an okay place that makes very few reasons why you should be there. The Adele shows at Caesars feels like the first "Vegas doing something extravagantly expensive" project to take off in a long time. The Native American casino tribes own casinos on the east (Virgin) and west (Palms) side of town and are about to take control of The Mirage in a few weeks, at which point the volcano show and all remaining Siegfried & Roy references will be pending removal. Bally's is being rebranded to Horseshoe but who knows how extensive that will be, right now they got as far as painting the eastern towers beige. Personal opinion as someone who does not stay in hotel rooms: Someone said the 90s casinos are suffering, but I think the mid-Strip ones are fine. Park MGM is like a lower-budget, younger person Bellagio compared to the bland as hell place it used to be. NYNY just redid it's hotel rooms again and being so close to the Park/Aria/Bellagio trio it might be the best mid-tier option on the Strip? Like how 15 years ago everyone was staying at Treasure Island for the proximity to Wynn. Casinos do strike me as different now in terms of who they are targeting. One thing I've noticed, if you can allow me a minute to be weird about something minor: Many of them play 1965-1985 hits, which is something I first noticed at Mirage but heard up and down the street. It's not like the old days when Bellagio played Sinatra and other standards, but it's like now that Katy Perry and Lady Gaga are over-the-hill enough to residency in Vegas and Taylor Swift got occupied rereleasing old albums, you don't hear them overplaying Billie Eilish or any other stars of the TikTok era they used to with Britney, Coldplay, Maroon 5, and the other 2000s acts. So don't be surprised if the muzak is playing Talking Heads or Aretha Franklin instead of Arianna Grande. I mean, I guess we did have our brief BTS phase earlier this year with that concert. And the reopened Palms is still bouncy pop at all hours. Also none of the ticket redemption machines give you change anymore so if you don't want to passively enrich the casinos you gotta take tickets to the cashier cage. If you missed it above, I actually tried to book at Linq, but the Caesar's reservation system stole 115 bucks from me without giving me a reservation. I just want a clean place to sleep. Reviews on Trip Advisor and Google make it sound like every hotel under $300 on the Strip is full of black mold and falling apart at the seams, so it's hard to figure out where to stay. Might try Park MGM next. But they charge for loving parking of course. Or I might call in to see what they can do about the Linq reservation and perhaps compensate me somehow for the inconvenience their system has caused me.

Gabriel Grub posted:If you missed it above, I actually tried to book at Linq, but the Caesar's reservation system stole 115 bucks from me without giving me a reservation. Well I was in TI about a year back and thought it was pretty presentable, cheaper and I think still does free parking (I wasn't driving myself but it comes up a lot in their promotional material) If you search YouTube for a given hotel and room level you should find several recent reviews, but unless there's some big event pushing prices up you can definitely stay somewhere clean and presentable for much less than that on the strip. Or if you go back to looking at Downtown prices will be lower, I think there's more free parking (I believe the Downtown Grand has it and probably others)

I like Travel Ruby for her reviews, she's stayed at pretty much every property on the strip and she's pretty honest. Most of her recommendations for cheaper accommodations are Caesar's properties, though. She did have lots of good things to say about the renovated NYNY rooms, and that's an MGM resort.

You know the Caesars properties also charge for parking? I think the only free parking anymore is Wynn/Venetian (which are probably not in your price range depending on your dates) or (apparently) TI. Most parking downtown is also paid but I don't know specific properties. I'm very angry about this in an old man yelling at clouds kind of way. I actually got change from a machine somewhere recently (off strip, maybe Suncoast) and was inexplicably happy about it.

Yeah, seconding this, she's pretty comprehensive and if you search her channel for a hotel, buffet or general topic like budget, cheap eats, transport and so on it's likely you'll hit something. There's also Norma Geli and Jacobslifeinvegas. Yellow Productions does a lot of Vegas content as well but is a general travel channel. But watch a few vids from any of these and the algorithm is going to start pitching you the others pretty quick.

Gabriel Grub posted:(Furiously booking hotel rooms) Why not try an Off-Strip But Close property, like The Orleans or Palms? You can park for free and Flamingo/Tropicana roads have buse routes that run on a high frequency so you never have to wait too long. You could also consider Virgin (a.k.a the previous Hard Rock) but since Harmon isn't well designed for transit just be sure to budget some Uber money and tell the app to take you to Cosmopolitan. That'll keep the ride shorter, the Cosmo property is physically small so you won't be dropped on the rear end end of nowhere like some casinos Uber (hi Caesars), and Cosmo is a great property besides. As far as downtown: it has its fans but if you're going to spend most the majority of your time on the strip anyway there's really no point. There are things to do over there and free shuttles that take you around to the container park, outlet mall, etc. There's even iirc a self driving car app thing that for free will take you as far south as the Stratosphere, but I don't know if it's running anymore. You asked about public transit, and The Deuce route runs slowly through the sketchy neighborhoods between the strip and downtown and can take quite a while to reach mid Strip. There's an express route that connects downtown to Tropicana/NYNY but it's a commuter express route that ends on it's 10-11PM run. That's fine for people going to Mandalay Bay for a convention but not an option for late night party clubbers. Craptacular! fucked around with this message at 23:22 on Dec 7, 2022 |

Maybe, conventions forgiving, consider Resorts World then. No parking fee, rates for the Hilton and Conrad wings can be reasonable, and there's a southbound Deuce stop just outside the property to take you where the action is concentrated. The food is overpriced there but the awesome Peppermill is nearby. Just be very careful with the street crosswalk between Resorts World and Encore. You're taking your life in your hands there. Since Parking came up I thought I'd share this sort of wrap-up of 2022 in Vegas with a look forward to 2023 which includes all the free parking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5imFtdDYXY TLDW: Tropicana, TI, Venetian/Pallazo, Wynn/Encore, Sahara, Resort World and the Strat are the free parking venues currently on the Strip, with prices tending to be on the increase at those that charge. I think Planet Hollywood dropped free parking fairly recently so these may not all last.

I'm going to Vegas again next year for AEW Double or Nothing like I did this year for Memorial Day Weekend. Still picked the Rio because I'm someone who doesn't mind walking in the day time to get on the strip. Ended up being for 6 nights being 345$ which my plane tickets being 550$. Not renting a car for the week; I burned myself badly last time using Expedia to do a package deal where I never used the car until 2nd to last day to drive up to Utah. Maybe next time I'll try the Linq, but either way the people I'm going with don't want to be on the Strip at all, we had fun at this place called Rebar in the Art's District (it's where a lot of Vegas DSA folks go as a lefty bar). Also planning on going to Goodsprings since I need to make Fallout New Vegas pilgrimage

Looking to breeze into town on our way to Park City for a ski trip. Wife and two kids in tow, zero interest in gambling. No one else has been to Vegas before, would like them to see the strip and maybe dinner at Lotus of Siam or somewhere else mid-tier and delicious. Is NYNY our best bet for a Monday lunchtime arrival, out the next morning? What am I missing for kids that's cheap and cheerful?

If that's the focus of your trip I'd recommend staying there, you can mess around on the strip when you get into town and then head up to Summerlin for the evening. (It's off strip but so is the original Lotus location.) NYNY has the roller coaster and the arcade which are kid friendly but none of the strip hotels are really "for kids". NYNY, Excalibur or comedy option Circus Circus (don't actually stay here) are probably the best if you prefer to stay on strip, depending on kid ages/interests.

If so, all major rental companies should have counters at the airport. If you're not flying in, in many areas Enterprise will transport you to/from the nearest rental location at no cost. I've rented from Enterprise in Vegas before and had no issues at all. I recommend reserving your rental online in advance to make sure there's a car waiting for you. Avoid Hertz (and their subsidiaries Thrifty and Dollar), unless you want a free tour of the US criminal justice system.
