I had some +whatever after teleport, it just wasn't enough. And I couldn't gem teleport, it was on cooldown. It was at the bottom of the maze, so like a super tiny map. I'm not very good at this game.

Gem Portal is your friend, and IMO is second only to a controlled teleport when it comes to methods of escape. I never really understood the desire to use a random teleport, unless you stack a ton of "+resist after teleport" items.

Well, you can't teleport to the inside of a vault, so that's one major use of "Just get me the gently caress out of here, right the gently caress now". If you're in a vault and the rest of the level is cleared, you're guaranteed to be safe. Beyond that, it's just the calculus of "I've cleared 75% of the level and the minimum teleport is at least away from these packs, let's hope I get lucky". But, yeah, random teleport does have risks.

Are there any UI mods that make the tooltips less rear end? I see all the teeny tiny green and red numbers vomited everywhere and my eyes glaze over.

Doesn't help that randomly generated items just have way too many random effects to parse through, but I could manage that if it was legible.

Wildfire archmage for me and forever will be "walk five steps, throw fireball at things beyond sight range and around corners, then run away from dangerous things while leaving a field of fire behind you.", Shame that the debuff remove doesn't work with spellcraft because the fire has to actually hit you to work that way.

I haven't played arcane blade in approx. a billion years, but I remember having quite a lot of success building 1h and shield, with 5/5 in earthen missiles and arcane combat, and then stacking +physical and using shield skills to proc earthen missiles many, many, many times.

As far as new information, Ogres seem pretty much custom-made to be good Arcane Blades. 2h + off-hand of whatever variety and an extra inscription slot beats Cornac any day.

Consider dropping into Daikara earlier so that you drag down the levels of anything in there. For luminous horrors the thing to really watch for is a little bundle of light dropped at your feet - if it's there, time to move. Their lasers are also bad but they're just a spike rather than a surprisingly strong DOT.

Doesn't show up in the main menu :( I dunno wtf. Might disable all my addons or something, but it's a huge drag to not work.

You aren't the only one, I tried to get oldrpg to work and no matter what couldn't get it to show up as an option. Funnily, when I disabled it afterwards, I missed the UI mod, and with just that enabled it changes the health and resource areas correctly (without an option for it), but with everything on it doesn't.

Man I just had the most amazingly bullshit-plagued game ever. I lost two warrior escorts on consecutive floors to things I couldn't have done anything to stop (first one hit a fork in the road with no way of telling which way he would go and walked straight into monsters, second one I was insanely careful and cleared everything in advance and the moron walked into a Disarming Trap left by a rare monster that somehow hadn't triggered when I walked over it) and then finally died in the Daikara because my teleport dropped me inside the main hall of the Snow Giant vault.

I'm not a big fan of escorts in general. Having 9 set stat boosts feels overly set and formal for a roguelike, and it feels bad when you lose one. I'd like it alot more if escorts were randomized in number, and more escort-like boosts were added (e.g. the yeek wayist giving you a confusion resist buff). Give it some sort of upper/lower limit so you can't get totally screwed though.

Also, request for anyone playing Assassin - let me know your feelings on Duellist. I think I might have made it far, far too good vs fast hitting mobs.

Tuxedo Catfish

Aren't the stat boosts a newb trap? My top priorities from escorts on most characters are either to get Celestial / Light and maybe the warrior or alchemist locked trees (if I'm playing Cornac or a class that has a cat point to spare) and/or to get Premonition, Vitality, and Healing Light.

Randomizing the number of escorts sounds horrible, I'd actually prefer it if the escorts you got were non-random. The rewards should either be consistent and (mostly) skill-based in terms of whether you get them or not, or just discarded.

e: Making optional challenges that can be failed without losing your character and reward you with specific one-time bonuses would be cool, though, especially if you tailor what the reward is to how you have to get it. The Yeek Wayist is basically a "can you teleport other and/or teleport yourself to a precise 1-tile target" in exchange for confusion resistance which isn't really related in any meaningful way, but at least it's consistent.

i've been loving around with a steam controller recently, and tome works pretty well with it. Except that movement loving sucks with a joystick, so i've been using the touchpad as a mouse and moving that way exclusively. I have noticed that this has made me much, much more careful. I haven't splatted an early game character to carelessness since i started using it. Try mouse movement if you, like me, die more frequently to your own impatience than anything else.

Archmage wildfire was as advertised, it was never a bad idea to explode everything with fire. Had a thoughtful fight with the bosses under the sea that was a rather pleasant experience. I even learned to use Blink offensively on enemies.

Unfortunately the first orc bossman was anti-mage flavoured. He and his psidude sidekick (also anti-mage flavoured!) forced me to the extreme range due to their overpowering talents. I was too dumb to back down and he proceeded to one shot me from near extreme range once I slipped up. The second continent is bullshit.

Actually, a touch interface gets around many of the conventional problems with playing with the mouse - I've been playing on my Windows tablet and it's surprisingly intuitive. You just have to bind the basic up/down/left/right mouse gestures to common interface commands like autoexplore, open inventory, level up, etc. and it plays swiftly.

Now try the higher difficulties. The biggest issue with Tome is the discrepancy between trash normal and lethal rare/unique enemies, which tends to get me killed through boredom more than anything else. Insane is probably too hard for winning to be feasible for most classes but Nightmare plus a rare/unique rate increasing mod is probably my sweet spot for enjoying the game.

It wouldn't actually require many interface changes. The most pressing issue is that it's difficult to view tooltips without initiating actions; it's also impossible to scroll down, so reading long lists or quest descriptions isn't easy. Otherwise the already-implemented gesture system, mouse/touch movement, and hot key bars are sufficient to play just as naturally as on a keyboard.

At the moment all siding with Assassin Lord will do for Rogue is reveal the Toxins tree (locked), as well as the usual prodigy access. Next patch he'll also teach a unique trap. So yeah, no rush to speak to him and you only need to do it once to permanently reveal Toxins.

is there ever really a good enough reason to do it? I only ever did it once to unlock the tree a long time ago, he just doesn't seem like a strong enough benefit vs. randart guy. I guess if I wandered in there with a character i didn't think could beat him i might just do it to escape, but that's it.

There should be a different reward for siding with the merchant and uncouple buying randarts from the quest entirely. I think buying randarts should be the reward for doing dark crypt as the benefits are more inline with how risky and dangerous dark crypt is.

Won with the Itemancer - getting Khulmanar's Wrath towards the end was super useful because it meant I could use both it and the Planar Beacon I had lying around from the beginning, giving me two heavy nukes that also healed me. Unfortunately, the final bosses have annoyingly high stealth detection, which was what I was relying on in a lot of ways, so Aeryn actually died, a rare occurrence. I missed out on a few of the most useful items, too - the Storm Bringer's Gauntlets in particular are amazing on a stealth Itemancer. I actually used Wyrmbreath the whole game, with Kor's Fall lasting all the way until Grushnak. Was silly, and fun.
