I suppose art that's "Rob Liefeld, but better" is a good match for a game that's "3.5, but better."

From what I've heard, it's almost impossible to find freelance artists who are: 1) cheap, 2) quick, and 3) willing to pay any attention at all to art notes. Given the budget and time constraints RPG publishers have to work with, point 3 is the one that usually gets waived for the sake of expediency.

Wait -- I haven't even voted in this game yet!

WAR is one of the most expensive and hardest to schedule artists out there for fantasy art. He's got a waiting list like 6 months long last I checked. Also, as far as Pathfinder art goes, I'm pretty sure they just give him a short description of what the class does and a race and gender and let him figure it out; all their other artists use his sketches/art to base their art of the iconics off of.

From talking with Mikan, I've heard the secret is to use artists who don't specialize in RPGs because those are the people who end up with all of the above. Career RPG artists are how you end up with this:

It's from here, which is the summary of prep for a panel on art in D&D. I that piece of art with the caption intact handy because it's hilarious.

quote:

In response to this and Chris’s earlier statement “illustrators don’t get to always draw what they want,” I wrote:

When I do freelance writing for RPGs, I’m sometimes in the position of trying to get an illustrator to draw what I tell them to. This is mysterious (because it passes through an art director’s hands as well) and sometimes frustrating (esp. because I have little training in suggesting illustrations, and there are often good reasons for the other agents in the process to say “no, what Tavis describes here won’t work”). I always try to write my art orders to focus on non-white characters using medieval-realistic equipment in situations that really emerge in play, and the output is often white heroes in anime-stylized gear in situations that happen in fantasy novels or the player’s daydream about playing D&D but don’t get any attention at the table.

quote:

Ryan replied:

The illustration that didn’t quite turn out is hilarious when you explain what it should have been. It looks like D&D nature porn. The RPG audience probably won’t ever kick it’s preference for chain-mail bikinis though. WoW-looking elf chicks might die out someday soon… I hope.

It's an interesting read. WotC ended up using the art for something or other eventually, but it pretty spectacularly failed to meet the art order requirements.

I've heard that miniatures sculptors are particularly bad for that sort of 'screw your guidelines' thing. Most of the 2D artists I've commissioned, I already know generally what I'm getting from their other works, or they're conscientious enough to send roughs and ask if they're accurate. The ones who don't, come out of my Rolodex.

I have that luxury though, not having deadlines for character art, and not having to deal with lazy artists who have become as iconic as the badly-drawn characters they were commissioned for.

What? It's a giant sea monster with an enormous maw underneath the ship, with some light clouds in the sky. You can still see the ship's wake behind them, it's not being obscured by the monster because the monster is in the water below.

Giant eyeball filled with teeth. If it's gotta be a huge, mind-shattering horror, might as well go all the way.

On an unrelated note, here's a bunch of portraits. The last image apparently depicts characters from Gardens of the Moon, I've no idea about the rest. They're all quite distinct-looking though, great for PCs and NPCs alike I'm sure!
