Yeah, the "public" in the phrase "public school" refers to the fact that they're owned by members of the public as a business enterprise, rather than operating as an arm of the state.

Also note to any yanks, since Android Blues mentioned these posh actors like Cumberbatch going to public schools- that means the opposite over here to what it does in America. Public school means a private fee paying school. Our equivalent to your public schools, the places normal people go to school, we call state schools.

Except in Scotland where schools where you are paying fees are called Private schools. Its always amusing when engish people refer to someone as "Northern", because they are all southerners to us.

Huh it never occurred to me that public school wasn't used up here, but now that you mention it.

I'm honestly not sure if we have public schools over on this side of the Irish Sea. They're usually categorised as "Protestant", "Catholic" and "Integrated" as far as I'm aware.

I went to a grammar school myself. It suited me fine, but I understand some people don't like them.

Australians have inherited similar attitudes with accents, all the regionalism and class distinctions. I have an accent a bit similar to Clive James without the Gough Whitlam nasality, and I was mercilessly teased and ostracized for it in North Queensland where the accent is broad and my RP-like accent was alien and hoity-toity. What the hell is "Received" anyway? Received from who? They sound very punchable. I've always loved northern accents and Irish accents from both my ancestry and exactly the same class distinctions so I'm no better am I, like the Who fans were all yay Eccleston good honest Northerner eww that chav of a companion though...

I get poo poo for my accent, but that's because it's a weird Australian-British combo that I have no idea of the origins of; none of my family sound like it, and I didn't really watch British TV until Doctor Who came back so it can't be from there. I sound British to Australians, Australian to British, and British to everyone else, unless they know I'm Australian.

My accent is unpopular in every country.

From my American perspective, it's the hardest to understand of all the various regional English accents. I'm glad that certain scenes in District 9 had subtitles.

I can understand specific South Africans I know pretty well, but seeing them in movies or on TV is a challenge.

This isn't true. The "public" refers to the fact that anyone could in theory attend them, unlike ecclesiastical schools or those for the sons of guild members.

Didn't a lot of people post about hating the Big Finish Key to Time here? Or was it just the Graceless spin-off? I'm a bit into the second part (The Destroyer of Delights) and it's actually really good so far. They're definitely rolling the dice with it, because one of the Companion Chronicles in the middle of it is told from the bad sister's perspective, although I have to admit that even though I objected to that on principle, the story was actually pretty okay except for the ending.

That makes sense. An entire spinoff related to those two characters would be a strange choice at absolute best. The Judgement of Isskar really gave Peter Davison a lot to work with, though. I don't know if his birthday sale is still going on at the Big Finish website, but it if it is, I recommend that one for anyone looking to grab a few deal stories.

I really enjoyed the first two - Judgement of Isskar and The Destroyer of Delights. It was really refreshing to hear Davison's Doctor paired with someone who genuinely wants to learn from him, instead of the 'exasperated Dad shepherding rowdy and unenthusiastic kids around' thing he usually has going on.

The third part is an unpleasant, incoherent mess, though. And also, though I've not heard Graceless, I couldn't think of two less suitable spin-off characters than Amy and her sister that I can't remember the name of. They were (literally) made for this plot.

Yeah, it's very interesting exploring the nature/nurture stuff by having two "twins" who are essentially clean-slate adults make a choice as who to travel with and have it shape their personalities, but even three full length stories is stretching it a bit, let alone an entire stand-alone spin-off. The whole appeal is that this is a completely new thing that Davison's Doctor is just kind of running with, and I'm sure it creates an arc for Amy to learn her identity from him and then part ways, at which point we really, really don't need to see more of her.
